    Melbourne Big Boat Fleet

Simply Fun went out for a pre-Hobart sail test and training sail. We didn't see much over 20 knots from the North from 12 - 3 pm. The Southerly change came through once we were packed up at about 4 pm with about 35 knots at SYC. Trying to fill in the sail selection chart for broad to tight reaching. Went through the A5, JT, J5 and A4. Reef in / reef out. Very productive session. Considered fish and Chips at Port Arlington. Probably more useful to us than a Range Race anyway... Mex

And now the ORCV have sent out SMS text messages advising the race has been abandoned. Pooh!

Interesting to see that Rob Hanna is racing Shogun V in the BWPS Flinders Islet race this weekend. I thought Shogun V was the inshore around the cans version.... Mex

Yeah, it's odd. The SYC winter series and the ORCV winter series were on alternate weekends with the exception of date set for a re-sail plus the Geelong race. Anyway, doesn't sound like much actual sailing happened. Very slow trip down to G'town and a motor home. Mex

They missed probably half a dozen entries from SYC by scheduling this race at the same time as the last race of the SYC Winter Series. Not sure why they felt the need to do this... Mex

Looking forward to hearing a glowing and excited post from you Don on how much you're enjoying your sailing... where ever you find it. Not looking to single you out, but there's a lot of moping and wringing of hands going on around here. Personally, I thought the Apollo Bay race was well run and well attended by a variety of boats and sailors. Isn't that a good thing? Mex

And so it was. I sailed with Simply Fun and it was certainly the right boat for the conditions. Kite start under a full moon. Change to the Code 0 around Torquay after nearly being run over by a container ship who performed a "crazy Ivan" after dropping their pilot. Breeze out of 350 at mid-teens meant some tight reaching and when the breeze went to 320 in the mid twenties around Kennett River. Dropped the zero and two sail reached to the finish with J3 and full main. Some exciting times before dropping the zero with boat speeds over 20 knots and 30 degrees off course. Missed the record by 5 mins but cleaned up all handicap results. She's a boat that certainly loves the ocean. Home and all packed up at Sandy for a beer by 7.30 pm Shame Phil had to miss the race with YA commitments. Maybe next time... Mex

Good turn out for the Apollo Bay race starting 2.30 am Saturday morning. Talk of a race record in the offing (isn't there always). Beam reach will make the nav and tactics fairly straight forward and unlikely to suit the Beneteaus. The HH42 is going to have to have the pedal to the metal to stay ahead of their handicap. Lovely weather for it. Tam O'Shanter overnight race run out of SYC on Friday night. Nice little tribute to Lou in the bar before we hit the water. Race was the usual shit-show. No light on R1 was sub optimal. Full glass out at 5.30 am. Esprit and Dark & Stormy hit the beach at around Franlkston and came out smelly like roses. A big roll of the dice that paid off. I though the standard thinking was to never sail into Carrum Bight??? Paid hansomely this time! Mex

Whatever you would pay for that boat, the price won't include the talent that made her go so well in the 2013 Hobart. Without them on board she will be deep in the chasing pack. Really nice boat, often well sailed, very well optimised just before the race... and fantastic to see her do so well in the Hobart, but she has not previously been competitive to that degree in that sort of fleet. Big shoes to fill. Didn't they race south with Nitro and Barney? Big expensive pro sailor / sailmaker shoes to fill.... Mex
