    29er lower mast joint

Hi there, I'd like to see if someone has had some similar experiences or even even a good solution for a problem I have with my 29er mast. Even under a moderate forestay tension and no dramatic crashes or dragging the mast tip along the seafloor the middle part of the mast gets pushed into the lower part. The movement seems to be limited only by the two parts of the sail track jamming against each other which can't be good for the rivets holding them. It's not the first time I have to address this problem. In the original design the four M6 bolts that hold the spreaders to the mast do secure the two mast parts together as well. They are screwed into an aluminium insert inside that doesn't provide a way to properly torque the bolts imho. (Sorry for the large pics.) Of course in the long run, the holes in the two mast parts either get worn out or corrode and the loads on the mast do the rest. I thought that real nuts would be a good idea and did a stainless steel insert with welded-on nuts. (Cap nuts because I don't want my halyards to chafe on the bolt's ends. And yes, there is paint on the final part because electrolytic corrosion, bla, bla. ) Yes, I have torqued the bolts to their max. admissible torque, can't remember the number. But yet, no luck, the friction between the two marts parts that is created by the four bolt's pressure is not enough to keep the mast parts from sliding into each other until this is stopped by the mast tracks jamming together. JB has been talking about this around 2017 on his website as well as in a proposal that can be found on the 29er class website, but I can't find any follow-up whatsoever on the topic. http://bethwaite360.com/forthcoming-changes-to-the-29er/ https://www.29er.org/images/stories/2017/Cannoning-mast-resolution-17-01.pdf Personally, I am not convinced that by adding two bolts into the same weak sleeve the problem can be solved permanently and I think that it's only a matter of time until those two holes get worn out as well. Any ideas ? Did someone actually apply the six-bolt-solution ? Cheers

    29er upwind tips

Hey, i've sailed a season and a half of 29er in Hong Kong, and i'm wondering how to sail well upwind. My main struggle is that I tend to sail quite a low angle by following my jib telltales, even though my jib is usually well set. Also, i've just started playing the jib more, how can I do that better? Thank you!!

    Swollen 29er foils

Hi there, having spent quite a lot of time fruitlessly searching though the internet I'd like to see if anybody around here has any helpful input. We've recently got an older 29er with the original aluminium foils. They are anything but pretty but no real damage to the metal itself. Trouble is, they are very hard to get into and out of the daggerboard case / rudder stock although the correct gaskets are fitted. (The foils of another boat do just fine in there.) When looking at the end of each foil, it's clearly visible that the aluminium profiles have gotten thicker than the plastic end plugs, about 2mm on each side. The bulge is mainly located halfway between the "spar" where fore and aft profiles join and the trailing edge. My best guess so far is that the PU foam inside the foils has somewhat swollen, either by absorbing water or storing salt from the sea water or that there is enough corrosion on the inner side of the metal to explain the extra thickness. I am well aware that buying a set of new (GRP) foils would quite probably be the easiest way to cope with this, but still I'd like to try and save some money. I'd like to get the foam out of there and see if the profile gets back to it's original shape and if not so apply a little, equally distributed, pressure. Any idea of how to achieve this ? Dissolving PU foam seems to be quite a nasty job so I'd rather try a mechanical method like drilling a looong hole through the foam and working out most of the rest with a looong saw blade, perhaps a piece of a bandsaw blade. Strict adhesion to class rules is not mandatory in this case BTW. Any ideas ? Thanks at least for reading...
  4. I'm in Seattle for a year and am trying to acquire a small used double-hander with a trapeze and asymmetrical, preferrably in the $3-5K range. I'm aware of the 29er, 49er, RS500, Vanguard Vector, and i14 as potential dinghies that would fit the bill. Anyone know of one of these or something similar available in the western half of the US? I'm monitoring the 29er classifieds site but haven't had any luck so far. I'd also require a road trailer to transport it. If anyone's trying to get rid of one of these or has suggestions about where to look, it'd be great to hear from you! Thanks--
  5. Sadly I can't link videos, so here's a pic. Our coach is telling me (helm) to sit out more, to stop footing too much, to tack before the layline. Other than that, we need to improve just about everything. Any and all tips will be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Fyi the pic was in a 8-10kn (I think) day.
  6. Made the rookie move of losing the line I was using to run the spin halyard through the mast in the 29er. Getting ready to break down the mast and re-run the halyard but wanted to see if it mattered which side of the trapeze and shroud bolts the halyard goes on.
