      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

  1. So I got an invite to sail at the legendary Columbia Gorge and it more than lived up to its reputation. Race officer on Sunday measured 20 to 30 knots with at least one gust of 40+ knots lasting at least a minute on the deck of the start/finish boat while we were racing. Very keen to get some photos of the boats racing, there were photographers there but I don't have any contact details for them. Does anyone have any idea where I can start to track them down? Question of spelling/pronunciation: I heard Columbia Gorge One Design (CGOD) pronounced as Sea God or See God, it is fresh water so not sure about the first, what is your opinion? For those not familiar with the venue, it is a tiny club run by a group of fantastic volunteers. This is the carpark with the clubhouse in the background: This is the amenities:
  2. Hi guys Some background: Im new to this forum and to sailing. My wife and I are very interested in learning to sail. I found a few local dinghy sailing clubs and was planning on taking some lessons and renting a dinghy thereafter, but I met a keelboat sailor the other day, and he suggested that I just buy one and learn to sail it then. To get back to my question, what would you guys suggest to be a better buy? 420 or 505? I would be looking for something that I could use to learn on, but that would still be useful once we get better at it. I am rather tall, about 1.9m and together we probably weigh +- 160 to 170kg together. It would also be a bonus if I will be able to sail the boat by myself on the days shes not available to join, obviously not at a racing standard, but just so I can get out onto the water. As you guys can probably gather, I dont know much yet. The 505 I can buy is about half the price of the 420, but I know that the 420s are popular here as a training dinghy for double learners. I have no idea to what level either of them are kitted out, all I know is that they are both in good condition and have all their sails and a few extras. Thanx in advance guys
  3. we bought a 505. it has lots of upgrades but is still an old beater. we need to re-glue parts of the CB trunk to the floor, reinforce the CB pivots, and re attach some of the tabbing to the hull. It is a Lindsey finished Parker hull late '70's. the inner skin looks like Kevlar. The class website has some archived projects that sorta address this stuff but any advice is welcome. The next question is the main sheet block. it is missing. I know what it looks like. I can buy it at Fisheries. The girl wants me to drive because she doesn't think she can sheet it well enough and hold it in up breeze moments. I am wondering about either another part of purchase and a BIG hexarathchet if there is such a thing will it help her. She is undoubtedly a better driver than me so this is important. Thanks
  4. I have a 505 (17' LOA on dolly, no road trailer) plus 2 masts (25' LOA) that I am trying to get from New England to the SF Bay area before the end of the year. Any leads on a load headed west would be appreciated.
  5. I have an ancient 505 with sails that are nearly as old as I am. It'll never race, but It would be nice to trim the sails to something a little less embarrassing. Ideally I'd buy someones retired Thursday night sails. I have a proctor D mast. I don't know if it would be compatible with anything made this century. I'd be appreciative if someone could point me in the right direction.
  6. Don't want to start a controversy like the whole youngest person to sail around the world drama but wanted to mention that Christina Bowden successfully sailed the Aus 505 nationals and was 14 years 189 days old on the day of the first heat. Came 18 out of 30 boats and improving as the series went on which is not a surprise as the first heat was her first ever 505 race. We had been out practicing but not raced before the nationals. TV news item We borrowed Earle Alexanders 1989 Kyrwood, number 8185 but sailed with sail number 8781. Special graphics and learner plates at the start of the event: We promoted her to a red provisional licence for the last race: At the presentation, making her crew look big:
