Our particular racing is a bit off the normal for "ocean racing" but there's not a forum for "Big Old Boats Thrashed Slowly Around Buoys" that I could find, and the gear/software that we use is common to "Ocean Racing" so here we are. We do 3-4 mile beer cans with 3-4 guys on a yawl, in a 200 meter wide tidal estuary with 20+ boats milling about on a Wednesday night, and follow up on weekends with 10-15 mile races on the SFBay. That's one to tail, one to grind, one to steer/main/mizzen and if there's 4th to be foredeck. On a good night we don't hang up too many tacks, but there's nobody free to poke buttons on the instruments, so getting them into some vestige of an automatic sequence would be ideal. On weekends, some times my wife is available to "navigate" but not always. Seeking advice on how to get best use of the tools before/during race by setting up before the warning gun, I can do the post analysis well with Exp. Pre-start: tracking shift periods, and TWD/TWS is pretty straight forwards, and we've the Oakland inner harbor tide station as a resource to EXP. Not sure if there's a similar resource to feed the H5000/Zeus2 with currents/tides (have CMAP) Start: Line: We use a combination of ATON, Fixed reference and dropped buoy/committee boat so one end is known and the other can be "pinged" during the milling about. Timer: Been experimenting with GFD vs Zeus2 display of countdown, and using "Start" vs timer displays, So far the crew seems to be able to obstruct all choices equally well. Not figured out how to have the GFD/Zeus2 roll over from start to "sailsteer" or other databoxes. Courses: there are 9 or so choices each for either beercan or "interclub" racing, we tend to use the paper course sheet for beercans as we find out the start at the warning gun, and without extra hands/ navigators have not tried to select from menus though, that might be worth 30 seconds. For Bay races, legs are long enough to enter in course. On Exp, I can retroactively set course and replay as needed, though not use the send mark features as it's on the chart table not in the cockpit. Race: given the orientation of the Estuary, sometimes our line is ridiculously biased and the first leg is a tight reach on Port. Other times its' a real beat. Given the lack of fingers to set displays trying to figure out what to have on the GFD (port and starboard cabin bulkhead, in easy view of helm) vs Zeus2 12" next to companionway. Have been experimenting with the "sailsteer" on GFD and augmenting with databoxes on Zeus, have not yet used Exp to display alternating channels on H5000/Zeus We have the gofree Wifi and can use an Ipad to remote the Zeus display the 8 feet from cabin bulkhead to wheel +/or Splashtop for Exp display, and if Ventus Pro i the magic, it's affordable. Things I'd like to have the tools do, but don't know how to, of if they are possible? Be able to pass the course selection, not just next marks to/from EXP/Zeus2 by menu, not SD card. Be able to synch start timer between H5000 and Exp (starting on H5000 triggers Exp) Display the EXP start/screen on Zeus2 (use the "video" ? ) Have the Zeus2/GFD roll over from start to upwind configuration either when the line is crossed, or at "N" seconds after the gun. Any suggestions other than get more crew and be able to use the tools as currently configured?
LionessRacing posted a topic in Gear AnarchyIf we had a full/professional crew, getting out and calibrating the H5000 and using Exp with a Navigator would be straightforward, albeit still tedious and requiring effort and thought. SInce we are strictly part time, and have minimal to zero crew other than on race day, its a bit harder to try to polish the sensors into giving meaningful numbers. Any suggestions on better practices are welcome: "Lioness" is a 1962 Bermuda 40 Classic yawl, 20,000 lbs, CCA design full keel/centerboard, PHRF 177 in NORCAL. (similar to this, but 4' shorter mast http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=1847) BSP: Slowly grinding into values that are believable: (we have two ST650 transducers mounted approximately at main mast (15 feet from bow) and offset +/- 1.5 ft from centerline, just past start of long keel) learning to use wet sanded antifouling (Pettit Hydrocoat) on paddlewheels to reduce sliming pulling them out when not racing, with antifouling blanking plugs in place. Calibrate port & starboard at max motoring speed vs SOG with little to well known Current Calibrate further for heel effects as time and observations permit. Not sure I need to do any non-linear calibration as this boat is unlikely to plane, and if it did I'd not be worried about speed. HDG/SOG/COG: No issues noted in any of these, reading EXP logs the differences in COG/HDG seem to be related to ROT. Have a Precision -9 mounted near center of boat, on bulkhead approx 2 ft behind main mast, approx 2 ft above water line ZG100 GPS mounted on centerline of stern rail to keep clear view of sky, Zeus2 mounted on centerline at 14ft aft of main mast (backup GPS) Rudder&ROT heel/trim/pitch: have done nothing to calibrate these other than inputting estimated max rudder angle, and observing heel/trim seemed close when boat at rest. 3D Motion sensor 2 feet below Precision 9, to be closest to center of motion RF300 Sensor on quadrant Wind: VMHU mounted 80 cm above Main truck. Noting minor offset on AWA TWA calibration pending on SOLID BSP Questions for setup: LEEWAY: Coefficient for H5000/Exp Do you take it from delta of HDG/COG when sailing vs motoring at same COG/current state? Does anyone really "tow a thin wire" or drop small floating objects and sight them? Is the leeway formula of leeway= heel* K/BSP^2 acceptably accurate ? I have USSAILING ORC perf pack leeway "PHI" numbers, is back calculating K from those a better way? TWA/TWS/TWD calibration: Do you have one table, or several that you swap with sail changes? Nick advocates the TWA/TWS be done in H5000, is that your practice? Is there anything I am missing? Usage: Typically we use the Zeus/GFD to ping starting lines, having the typical courses set in both Exp and Zeus for reference, beercans are 3-4 miles and run in the Oakland estuary, with dropped marks that can be off station week to week. Weekend 15-20 mile races are run on YRA courses with Zeus2 used to track course/feed bearing to marks with wife navigating. Exp is used mostly to log the race and replay, noting areas for improvement as notebook computer is at nav station and no "navigator" on beercans.
