      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

  1. J27 vs Evelyn 32

Debating between a J27 and Evelyn 32. I like the thought of less crew and SLIGHT reduction in sail costs/lines for the J27 but can't convince myself that it would be a better choice over the Evelyn. Cost for the two boats I'm looking at are similar to identical and come with a fully loaded sail inventory that sounds comparable as well. Any thoughts on the two boats? Has anyone sailed both frequently or regularly? Would be doing PHRF club racing and distance races. Thanks in advance!
  2. 2016 Sportboat PHRF Matrix

I compiled and analyzed data from the new 2016 US Sailing PHRF Book, comparing the Melges 24, Viper 640, VX One, Rocket 22, and Melges 20, all to the J/70, and to its 117 J/Boats reference rating. I used all regions, our current local ratings for Lake Champlain PHRF, and excluded one region. Attachments next.
  3. AYC Spring Series 2017

2017 American Yacht Club Spring Series American Yacht Club Rye, NY, USA April 29-30 & May 06-07, 2017 Notice of Race The weather is going to be nice this week, perfect time to be thinking about the Spring boat projects before the AYC Spring Series. Who is in?
  4. ORC rule was implemented as the principal handicap rule for the Charleston Race Week 2017, it was the first time the system was used in a major North American regatta. Thirty boats raced in four separate ORC Classes at this event One of the most competitive fleets was ORC C. The fleet consisted of f 9 boats, SR33, Melges 32, Melges 30, Heno 30, 2X Farest28Rs, and 3GP26s. USA2604 Michael Beasley and Team Rattle and Rum won the event with a comfortable margin. the results are here Overall, the ORC rating system seemed to work well... More often only a few seconds were the deciding factor between the corrected times... The overall award for the best performance in an ORC Class went also to Mike Beasley and his Annapolis-based crew of Joe Gibson, Ted and Joanna Harland, Scott Gibbs and Ty Van Dalen... Beasley and his crew were awarded the prestigious and historic Palmetto Cup for winning the tightest class in the handicap divisions. We are very happy to see the boat performing well under ORC rating. Hope it will get more popularity in the USA, as this will lead to exciting racing with some fast boats... Congratulations to Eagles Eye (FE28) and Short Bus (Henderson 30) as well as all other teams competing... photocredit: CharlestonRaceWeek; TimWilkes Photography Attached Thumbnails
  5. SoCal PHRF offers a list of adjustments to some cruising boat ratings, so they can better race against racers in the non-Cruiser classes. (Appendix F). They call this their Corinthian rating. On one hand, it might increase participation. On the other hand, you might end up with two same-model boats having different ratings. It doesn't seem well known. http://www.phrfsocal.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/PHRF_Rules_Version_031616_Appoved_Final.pdf
  6. Help! We are racing a Simpson 48 catamaran (13.7 m (44.936’)) that has been modified with 3' ama extensions aka sugar scoops. This boat is new to the owner and racing. It doesn’t have an established rating, short of a provisional PHRF 141.0 rating from the recent Fort Lauderdale to Key West race, in which it won the multihull division. In the name of fairness, transparency and the spirit of competition, we are looking for a sister ship with a racing history or documented rating. The boat was designed by Roger Simpson and I would suggest there may be a few racing in either Australia or New Zealand. I have researched race results and I contacted half a dozen multihull clubs in both countries with no luck so far. If anyone can post a link to this thread with a rating for a 13.7 Simpson with or without the sugar scoops or direct me to a sister ship that has a race record or result, I would be very grateful. Time is of essence, since the rating of this boat is to be ‘penciled in’ this coming Friday in preparation for the Miami to Havana race.
  7. AYC Fall Series 2016

There's a lot going on at this year's Fall Regatta, are you in?
  8. Beneteau 36.7 continues to build crew for local racing. Fall schedule per BBYRA calendar. Experienced crew preferred.
  9. The entries haven't officially opened but I thought I'd throw it out there to see if I could kick this in gear. The J88 One-Design is making plans to participate in this regatta. Hopefully Zuse Inc. and Duck Island Yacht Club and all their amazing volunteers will again host this. Since 2002 Ted Zuse and Co. has hosted the "even-year" or "off year" regatta; before that Peter Craig and Premiere Racing. Block Island is a great venue and on the "off years" -- it is really fun. It's about racing. It's about competition. It's about sailing One-Design. It's committed sponsors. This is NOT AN ADD for the regatta (the attached graphic is not officially endorsed by Zuse or DIYC) Every year the organizers lament about how participation is declining. Here are a few suggestions if the Race Organizers want people to show up for a regatta you should: • update the website (so people know about 2016) • set up the event on Yachtscoring (so people can register) • make an announcement before January 1st: - so people can make Ferry Vehicle Reservations (From Block Island Ferry: "Vehicle reservations for summer weekends and holidays should be booked in early January." ) - so people can get housing ... - so people can get make dock space or mooring reservations ... - so people can get crews and make arrangements ... - so the Island and hosting facilities know your intentions ... Since the "off year" regatta is mostly J boats maybe J-Boats would like to get involved.
  10. AYC Spring Series 2016

http://yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=1644 Alright, who's in? Yes, it's early to be talking about Spring Series, especially with so many great events happening down south. But with advanced notice, maybe we won't hear the excuse "I didn't have time to get my boat ready." So get your shit together and get out on the line.
  11. I'm a volunteer for Lake Champlain PHRF. We are all un-paid and try to do our best to encourage handicap racing on our beautiful lake. We need to revise our rules to provide adjustments for asymmetrical spinnakers on boats that were originally designed for symmetrical spinnakers. We are looking at adapting the NE PHRF guidelines. They talk about bow-tacked spinnakers, but we have noticed that some of the affected boats have their headsails attached at a forestay location well back from the bow. We feel like any attachment distance forward from the standard jib/genoa/forestay should be the same as having a sprit of the same distance. I would like to see if there are any PHRF representatives from other regions who have addressed this. Please let us know what has worked for your region. If you have a PHRF rule which also allows symmetrical and asymmetrical spinnakers and rates for the most advantageous downwind sail, please let us know! Thanks! I thought PHRF was tough as a competitor. Now that I am volunteering on on the committee, I realize it is even harder than I thought. We would appreciate any help and advice. If you want to complain about PHRF, there are plenty of other threads for that. My personal way for minimizing PHRF complaints is using class splits based on both PHRF and displacement (http://lcyc.info/racing/divisions), but that is another topic! Many thanks, Jason
