      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

      Moderation Team Change   06/16/2017

After fifteen years of volunteer moderation at SA, I will no longer be part of the moderation team. The decision to step aside is mine, and has been some time in the works but we did not wish to announce it in advance for a number of reasons. It's been fun, but I need my time back for other purposes now. The Underdawg admin account will not be monitored until further notice, as I will be relinquishing control of it along with my administrative privileges. Zapata will continue on as a moderator, and any concerns or issues can be directed to that account or to the Editor until further notice. Anyone interested in helping moderate the forums should reach out to Scot by sending a PM to the Editor account. Please note that I am not leaving the community, I am merely stepping aside from Admin responsibilities and privileges on the site.

  1. Scuttlebutt has published an interview with KF about the next edition of the VOR. There is a press conference scheduled this Saturday May 16th in Newport to go into more details. Take aways / comments from the article - stopovers confirmed: Alicante, Cape Town, Auckland, Lisbon, Cardiff and Gothenburg. - stopovers TBA: North & South America, China, and potentially Middle East. A bit of a surprise that VOR is considering not to stop in the Middle East. Abu Dhabi must not be willing to keep spending big bucks despite their likely win and nice stopover. Oman was the other option rumored, especially if OmanSail has a team next time around. - target team numbers: 7-10. A pity KF thinks more teams would not receive enough (media/fan) attention. For a B2B platform like the VOR, not really the right argument. My take is since VOR is not willing to underwrite the construction of the new boats, KF is just being both cautious and realistic. 10 boats would be a 40% increase from this time around. A great success if achieved. - current teams: no current team is fully committed to 2017-18. Alvimedica was rumored to be repeating. The Dutch as well. SCA wanted, too, but maybe its new management has different plans. - boat: some refitting to be done in the autumn. - activation during dull years. No comment in the article. Surely something shall be mentioned on the 16th. http://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2015/05/13/volvo-ocean-race-already-planning-for-the-next-edition/
  2. "Where are they now?" We have launched a very exciting research project called "Where are they now?", the project aims to find all the old yachts that has participated in Whitbread Round the World or Volvo Ocean Race since the first edition in 1973. The research will result in an exhibition displayed in Gothenburg during the finish of Volvo Ocean Race. The exhibition will be open for the public free of charge and hopefully it will contribute to keeping the legacy of the great race alive. Since the first race 41 years ago 152 yachts has started the race, far from all of them reached the finish-line. They all have a very different life as retired Whitbread/VOR yachts, some has sunk, some are forgotten, some has been involved in drug smuggling and some are in absolute mint condition. TheDailySail.com launched a thread 4 years ago with the same aim, loads of leads came from the readers, but many yachts are still out there with no leads. We are now calling for help from all anarchist to help us locate all of them! Anyone that finds us a yacht and send us a high resolution picture will be mentioned in our exhibition with a special “thank you!” And one of you will be the lucky winner of a Musto Volvo Ocean Race jacket. Gothenburg Stopover
  3. http://www.yachtingworld.com/news/mark-turner-takes-helm-volvo-ocean-race-70884 So, Mark Turner will indeed be taking over from Knut Frostad for the next Volvo. In media terms he did a great job with Dongfeng last time; there was more footage available faster off their boat than was the case with any of the other teams. (I'm looking at you, ADOR.) I know sailing obsessives are a tiny audience compared to the general-interest crowd that Knut was after with the dumb 1-minute compilation videos set to music, and I don't begrudge him trying to pull in more eyeballs that way. But I absolutely do begrudge him locking away the video uploads as they were coming off the boats, de-authorizing access to the FTP server by a media operation he deemed insufficiently official because it was just reposting the raw videos to the web. It's a sport. Obsessive fans are obsessive. I want access to all the information I can get, in real time if I can get it, or as soon as possible otherwise. I realize the Volvo doesn't have the resources of a big-money sport, and I don't expect them to have 24-hour satellite feeds off the boats or helicopters following them across an ocean. And some of the footage they did deliver last time was great: The Cape Town in-port and departure, the start of Leg 5, and the rounding of Cape Horn were amazing. But I don't want an outdated media attitude impeding the flow of information. From some of Mark Turner's remarks in the last race and the way he ran Dongfeng I think he gets that. I hope he'll apply the same philosophy on a larger scale in the next race. What do you all think?
  4. Clean has hinted that people in the VOR media operation in Alicante read the SA forums. I don't know if any of them will read this, but I had some comments I wanted to share about them/for them. Kind of an open letter, I guess. I don't expect anyone to actually read it or give it any weight if they do. But I felt like saying it. There are two things I wish the VOR media operation would give me for Christmas: More access to raw videos They've said publicly (I think it was in a translated interview with Knut that I saw a week or two ago, but I don't want go digging for it) that this time around they are specifically focusing their media effort on reaching out to a larger audience, people beyond the obsessive types who (say) post messages in these forums. And you can see that in the videos they produce, with their emphasis on cutting together the on-board footage into brief human interest stories. They want to appeal to a general-interest audience, not just to sailing obsessives. Fine. But as someone who is really into the race, and who does have an ocean racing background, it can be frustrating trying to follow it with only that tiny peephole into what's actually happening. I wish they would put just a little more effort into serving the more knowledgable part of their audience, even if it's just by releasing each boat's daily video package more or less immediately. They could still cut it into little stories that presumably interest their general-interest target audience. But in the meantime they could make the raw videos available somewhere so obsessives could watch it. They don't have to highlight it; just a small, out of the way mention somewhere so we can find it. I'm guessing each individual team (which I guess means each team's principal sponsor) is in charge of whether or not they release the OBRs' raw videos. That's why we basically get what I'm asking for in the case of Dongfeng, and then less-so from MAPFRE and SCA, and still less-so from Alvimedica and Brunel, and finally the barest dribs and drabs from Abu Dhabi. Ugh. It's so frustrating. All this awesome technology and expense and effort on the part of the OBRs to put these daily videos together, and then, at the final step when all that would be needed is someone issuing a single command in Alicante -- wham. It runs into a virtual reef. Sigh. More transparency / access to them There's a weird mismatch in how the central VOR media operation presents themselves to fans. On the one hand they're clearly a small team with limited resources and limited expertise. There's a distinct element of amateurishness in what they produce. I say that not to make anyone feel bad; it's just a fact. We all know what professional sports broadcasting looks like. The media coming out of Alicante isn't that. And you know what? That's fine. It doesn't have to be that. There's no way it could be that. It's weird, then, how standoffish they sometimes seem. The way they interact with their fans online feels like some huge, impersonal media conglomerate that can't possibly interact in a meaningful way because they have millions of viewers. Except they don't have millions of viewers. What would it cost them to engage with fans a little more openly? A case in point is the live video of SCA's arrival in Abu Dhabi (the "Live Arrivals Abu Dhabi 4" video). Apparently if you watched that live it worked fine (it probably wasn't very exciting, since it was happening at night, but you would have been able to see whatever it was they chose to include in the video). But then, after the usual delay after the livestream ended, when they uploaded the version for non-live viewing, the video had a serious problem, in that it was essentially blank. The audio was fine, so you could hear Genny doing interviews and everything. But there was nothing to look at. You can still see listen to the video here: It was posted on December 14. Six different people (of the 7 who commented on it) mentioned the problem. I assumed the VOR people would fix it and re-upload, or barring that at least make some kind of statement explaining that they weren't going to. But... nothing. After two days I dug up an email address and sent the following: A couple of days later I received this reply: And that's the last I heard. A while after that they made the video unlisted, such that you can still see it if you know the address, but it doesn't show up in their normal YouTube feed. I'm not expecting personalized service. But given that I really wanted to see that video, it's frustrating not to be able to. And just in general, it's frustrating that the people who control this media I'd like to be a fan of are operating in this oddly stealthy, non-communicative way. How hard would it have been to make a tweet? "Apologies for the problems with the SCA arrival video. We're working on a solution." "As it turns out we'll be unable to post the video of SCA's arrival in Abu Dhabi. Sorry about that." It's not like that information would have let me do anything. But it would have gone a long way toward maintaining my goodwill as a fan, my sense of enthusiasm about following the race, my feeling of being part of this. As it was, though, I ended up just feeling ignored. Pro tip: Making your fans feel like you're ignoring/neglecting/unconcerned about them is a good way to end up with fewer fans. I don't need them to interact with me personally. But it's an unforced media error, an own goal, for them to treat their fans that way as a group. The fantastic thing about this amazing technology stack, from the people and cameras on the boats to the satellites to the global information network with services like YouTube and Twitter, is that it gives us an illusion of connection. Two people on opposite sides of that network can be, at least for information purposes, in the same place. It's as if the sailors on the boats and the media people in Alicante and the fans around the world can all gather together and share this amazing event with each other in real time. A little openness from the media people would go a long way in nurturing that sense of connection. Supposedly they're monitoring these forums regularly -- but they never post. They have a YouTube channel and a Twitter feed -- but they don't respond to their YouTube comments, and rarely engage in any meaningful way on Twitter. Maybe it's a reflection of Knut's management style. He seems like a Type A, controlling kind of guy. Maybe he keeps everyone on a tight leash? No one can respond in real-time to an issue like the borked SCA arrival video, because they would need Knut's approval in order to do or say anything, and he's too busy with more important things to give it his time. I just want access to the information. Set it free! :-)
  5. Hi Guys, Was just wondering if anyone knew why there was no on-board footage for the inports in this year's VOR? In the last edition they had spectacular live footage and audio. Anyone know? Conor
