    Shaeogorath's crazy projects

    Hello and good day I have a few crazy projects that i thought i should share, perhapps you might care. The First is a Nacra 5.2 Catamaran. I have the original daggerboards and rudders, mast and jib, most of the sails some of the cable and the whole trampoline Last time it sailed i was 13, i have no clue how old i am now, stoped counting if i shave i cant buy beer I was planing to put it on foils, that i could remove and attach, from the rudder mounts in between the rudder and the hull ( i can make drawings) And just swap out the daggerboards for J style foil that i could build with a spine cable & spring or buy or I could manually warp the origional daggerboards and just install winglets on the rudders and hope i dont fly away But if anybody has any recommendations for what kind of foils for a old nacra 5.2 i am quite interested I also have a G-w/Delta 1985 15' volvo AQ125A penta 270 invader Which i picked up for the hull and i was planning to do somthing insaine But the engine appears to be in fairly good shape so im planing to rebuild it and see what happens If i can get the engine to run without rebuilding the lower section of the engine then im going to install a huge carb and maybe a turbo or supercharger so it can tow skiers and wakeboarders Ive already had to remove rotten wood that was lightly fiberglassed to the hull as reinforcement And then i was planing to build custom trim tabs that would function like stabilization foils If i gotta remove the engine and penta drive im going to rebuild it and drop it in a jet ski hull (the fat one) and my theory is that the lower And then take a mazda rotary engine and drop it in the invader and weld a propeller on the drive shaft But maybe i should just weld to the drive shaft to the of the penta drive You see what happned was... im a crazy mad scientist
  2. I have just bought a strip ply/plank, cold moulded? Simpson 8.3m cruiser. The boat is in need of repairs. Keels where ripped off and other minor water damaged. I have a few questions relating to this particular catamaran. any info much appreciated.

    Furling Spinnakers on beach cats?

    I've seen furling Spinnakers on a few fast catamarans recently, mainly foilers. The AC boats had them, and they seem to be trickling down to the smaller boats like the Flying Phantom. Is this just a foiling thing, or is there a benefit to non-foilers? Is it just class rules holding back the F18 for example?
  5. Hello Everyone, First off, excellent responses to Pepito’s plans. I’m Mitch Taylor in Stuart FL. Joined Pepito's thread a little late so started another just in case nobody was still on that one, not exactly sure how it works. If it's better to continue his thread then someone just erase this one. Just joining the SA forum for the first time (first Sailing forum ever actually) and looks like the best place, after many years of reading/ research, to find help. I’m on nearly the same path as Pepito though medical background, still practicing, with kids still in Middle school; but divorced, living alone now. The younger two, 11 and 13 will hopefully be living with me aboard a 35’ish monohull in the next year, then 42’ish cat in another 2 years. I’m self taught so far sailing a 17’ Watkins Daysailer (first sailboat) in the St. Lucie Inlet which has been great fun and invaluable experience. Just sold it for probably a F18 next step up. Then plan on persuing certification for Catamaran Cruising ASA certifications. My angle: I’m not ashamed to admit I'm a “spreadsheet” guy, trying to narrow down the field by SA/D and D/L ratios, etc., for a performance designed but liveable used, well built Cats in the 39 to 48’ range. Budget is similar to Pepito, but I’d like to keep the initial purchase in the $400k range for upgrades and surprises as I’ve read repeatedly overextending is maybe one of the worst first mistakes. Even the new 40's fully equipped are pushing $650k. And I would love to not take the hardest hit of depreciation with a new boat purchase. Therefore in reality what I guess I’m loofdsking for is most likely a 10 year old 42’ cat well balanced, performance to comfort, Owners version…. Earlier French, Australian, S African...Schionning, Grainger, Outremer, Catana, Lightwave, Nautitech, Fountaine Pajot, Seawind, Leopard? Would love a new Balance Roger Hill 451, but don't want or need a new boat. Can anyone point me towards previous threads, or books, blogs, personal SPREADSHEETS would be great!, etc to “analyze” the field? I know numbers can’t accurately describe the “feel” or value of a great boat or even make fair comparisons of boats with different strengths. There is no fast comfortable affordable boat. Every boat is a compromise for everyone’s priortities. Australian Multihull World Article by Joe Goddard seems to be on the right track but the graph didn't make the article. I emailed them and they replied with the graph below. MultiHull Dynamics has certainly done a lot of analytics but they can’t or won’t provide it in a spreadsheet format to view the entire database with adjustable variables, I’ve asked. So I'm comparing two at a time. I’m just trying to organize thoughts and create a list outside my head, that I can reference and share with notes of strengths and weaknesses so I can begin ranking favorites and thereby keep an eye on the market for what might pop up in the next couple of years. Surely I’m not the first. Favorites so far are Leopard 39 and 43 and SeaWind 1160. Love the accessibility of techniks on the Leopard for maintenance. As well as the semi raised bulkhead helm. Broad enough hulls to carry a reasonable liveaboard arsenal but not super heavy. Windows work, could be better. Good Sail plan. Would like the forward cockpit on the 44... Thoughts?   6. Hello crew, I am 39 years old and a software engineer. Not a fatty useless nerd -I was a pro athlete for over 10 years- I just happen to be good at math and computer science and went to college for it. I have no previous sailing experience but I've been raised -since I was born- in a small beach town so I am very familiar with the "sea". I am also a fast learner. Having said that.... I am planning on buying a catamaran in about two years. Budget is around $1M. The idea is to live on the catamaran with my family and work from there. I need some experts' opinion on what should I look for given the following constraints. - I need something spacious -probably more than 50ft?- otherwise wifey will be bickering... who wants that? - I am planning on sailing around the world. Mostly between America/Caribbean to Europe and vice versa (Atlantic ocean) and maybe venture out to the pacific at one point. - I am looking for comfort/performance balance -since I have to accommodate family even thought I would go performance if I were single. I don't mind reaching Europe a "couple days later" if that means my family feels "home". I guess I am looking for a balance but don't want a floating house either. - I am going to need to generate electricity while sailing (I need access to internet on demand). - That being said... I need the best technology onboard for internet connectivity. - Also I want to rely on technology as much as possible for cruising and navigation just for efficiency. I am very athletic so I don't mind physical work if needed. - Luxury is not important. As long as it is comfortable and "feels nice", I am ok. - Should I buy new or used? - Any specific brand?   9. One of the Godfathers of the Caribbean multihull sailing and racing (and partying!) scenes D Randy West has been lost to brain tumors from melanomna. I was still in bed early this morning and heard Skype ringing on my computer and it turned out to be a fellow Caribbean multi maniac in Aruba who had heard rumors of Randy passing. Must have been during the night and no real details yet but what I found on his facebook page. Randy owned PPALU a 75' Spronk catamaran and had skippered and raced a long line of Spronks since the 80's including SHADOWFAX and SKYJACK. I was lucky enough to have raced with and against him in the Caribbean and New England and he will be greatly missed among his tribe. His enthusiasm and smile was infectious and there was always a party that was threatening to break out wherever he went. R.I.P. Randy

    Modern rigging for bobstays

    Experienced opinions wanted: I am looking for a good solution to attach tack blocks & bobstays to outer end of our 5" carbon sprit pole. I have this idea of a delrin cylinder turned to match ID of pole. I can insert a piece of my old -40 rod diamonds in the concentric center of the cylinder, threading in on one end, and attach loups to this rod, which would then pass through relieved pockets or channels in the delrin that line up with openings in the carbon pole. One loup for each bobstay and a basket loup for reaching forestay. The delrin is heavy, but I want to avoid metal on carbon. How does this idea rate? I would like to hear what people have seen work well in this situation. We will bond in a stopper ridge to control delrin plug afterward movement. Possibly another bit to prevent rotation of plug in the pole. I want to do something clean and simple, without heaps of dyneema wraps and half hitches everywhere. Our boat is a Catana 471 cat, weighing about 25000#. Reaching genoa just under 1000 square feet. Any idea of how to work out forestay loads? We have option of structural furler/pinned forestay & 1:1 halyard OR hoisting sail on torsion line with 2:1 halyard & 2:1 tack line. Leaning toward the hoisted 2:1 setup, but welcome ideas. Halyard now goes through 2200# Spinlock XCS. I ordered a 6000# Cousin Trestec sock stopper, and am also considering a Harken Halyard tensioner (Pinned adjustable car on track with halyard pennant to hoist.) I need to decide soon. To attach bobstays to bows, I am waffling between tried and true padeyes, and Ropeye Pro. I am curious about longevity of Ropeye Pro. Originally we were planning to use a G-10 rod, machined into a thimble, penetrating each bow, or an outer flanged variant with diamond knot stopper set in outer end, but the other two options will be easier, and likely just as effective.     Calling UK and European catamaran sailors - It's the Whitstable Forts Race Weekend on 9th and 10th September. This is a unique long distance race, utilising a hub and spoke format to take boats around the sights of the North Kent coast (including the iconic World War 2 Red Sands Sea Forts), whilst keeping the fleet in a relatively condensed area for safety, and allowing for the provision of course shortening and options for prizes! The race is open to double handed beach cats from Dart 18 and faster, and most popular boats are Dart 18, Formula 18, Hurricane 5.9, Spitfire and Tornado. We're also usually visited by a few of the top developmental foiling boats, including Will Sunnocks' M20 Vampire Project.   14. Any Stiletto 23/27 owners out there? I sailed on one during the 80's but don't recall how big the berths are. I've seen them on the market and think they might be a good daysailer / over-night camper. Anyone know the dimensions? Or even better, have any good photos of the interior of the hulls? Thanks!
  15. Ride Height Set the ride height adjusters to 3 mm as measured between the top of the white edge of the foil and the bottom of the black trailing edge of the foil when the wand is straight down. Tighten the ride height nut fully, then undo the nut one quarter turn (just enough that you can adjust your ride height). Foil Rake For racing, setting the foils asymmetrically is optimal (say 2.5 windward, 3.5 leeward), but when first learning to foil set them the same bilaterally. Interestingly, it is necessary to set the foils with a higher rake for fresh water than for seawater due to the lower density of fresh water. For seawater, learn to foil at first with the foil rake set at 3 bilaterally; For fresh water, 4 bilaterally. Running with an Even Keel “The most important thing is the boat must be flat to foil.” Like a plane taking off, the wings will provide the most lift when parallel to the surface. Twin Trapeze Having both captain and crew out on the trapeze is the easiest way to foil. The crew uses the main sheet to maintain their stance on the hull while the captain uses the traveler (but do not uncleat the traveler). Beam Reach While you are on a beam reach going near your max speed, let the mainsail out slightly and you should start to foil. Avoiding Windward Capsize Once you start to foil, it is likely the mast will tip windward. When this happens, do not point more into the wind as you will luff and lose power in the mainsail. When foiling, your speed will increase and the apparent wind will shift forward. Sheeting in the main should apply more force leeward and avoid capsize.

Hey Clean, I’m not sure if you are aware of it, however there is quite a few catamarans being stolen in the Med at the moment. It appears that charter parties are paying to charter the yachts and then simply not returning them. We’ve had 3 in the last week alone, and there is obviously quite a few upset owners with the image of chartering being tainted. Could you use the power of our community to keep their eyes peeled for these yachts? Your ‘what is it?’s seem to get to the solution in a matter of seconds! There is serious reward money available - 'negotiate reward first' is the suggestion on the 'lost and found' pages, but it can't hurt to look around your marina or out your office window to see if there are some newish 50-foot charter cats laying about, can it?     Greetings! First post on Sailing Anarchy. I have absolutely no experience foiling and would appreciate tapping into the collective wisdom/experience of this forum. I'd like to see if I have a good grasp of crew weight placement on a foiling catamaran. Hoping to receive my White Formula Whisper next week. Props to Martin and Charlie P.   19. Help! We are racing a Simpson 48 catamaran (13.7 m (44.936’)) that has been modified with 3' ama extensions aka sugar scoops. This boat is new to the owner and racing. It doesn’t have an established rating, short of a provisional PHRF 141.0 rating from the recent Fort Lauderdale to Key West race, in which it won the multihull division. In the name of fairness, transparency and the spirit of competition, we are looking for a sister ship with a racing history or documented rating. The boat was designed by Roger Simpson and I would suggest there may be a few racing in either Australia or New Zealand. I have researched race results and I contacted half a dozen multihull clubs in both countries with no luck so far. If anyone can post a link to this thread with a rating for a 13.7 Simpson with or without the sugar scoops or direct me to a sister ship that has a race record or result, I would be very grateful. Time is of essence, since the rating of this boat is to be ‘penciled in’ this coming Friday in preparation for the Miami to Havana race.
