  1. Another from the upcoming DAME awards. A log sensor that measures leeway. IIRC, one of the boats in the Volvo before last (?Puma?) had one, but it was a big pile of cash item designed for ROVs. http://www.metstrade.com/mets/innovation/dame-nominees/?filterId=%7BA9D07E0A-31E3-4F18-9E98-9F511A52CFD8%7D
  2. Bought a new used boat, Garmin VHF 200i included, MMSI from another country. My registry demands I program a new MMSI in. My local chandler can send it to Garmin to have it reprogrammed. First they quoted €45, but later found out Garmin has raised the bill to €120/$140. I do not particularly like being robbed so I am trying myself. So far I have googled, tried to find the button presses and opened it without finding any reset button. Quite old threads on various forums claims there are no solutions but the Garmin way. There were rumours of reset-devices from ebay, but I can not find those either. There is a button combo* that takes one to a program mode for private channels and ATIS configuration, with the passcode "GARMINVHF". My suspicion is that with another passcode there is a menu to re-program MMSI and possibly other settings. Has anyone found out how to to reset a Garmin VHF by now? Button presses, passcode or some other method? * How to enter user-program-mode: Turn VHF off. Hold left soft-key under the display while simultaneously pressing power. Release when presented with "enter passcode"-display. Passcode "GARMINVHF"
  3. Hi Everyone, I'm racing on a J120 this summer. New boat to me, but definitely not a new boat. The electronics are Garmin, and everything seems to be working well except the BSP signal. I've attached a strip chart image of what we're seeing. It's accurate on the high end, but periodically drops low. The drop-out seems to happen at such a regular frequency that it seems unlikely to be caused by a loose/intermittent connection or bad speed wheel. Any thoughts on where we should start in diagnosing this one?

    J/109 Chartplotter Advice

I need to upgrade the 10+ year old chart plotter on a recently acquired J/109. Wondering if other JBoaters in my bracket have some suggestions? I'm leaning toward B&G. Trying to keep the existing Raymarine autopilot which is NMEA 2000 compliant. I'm also planning on mounting the new 9" or larger unit it in the nav station and using a tablet as a repeater in the cockpit, at least for next season. If that is too annoying, I'd consider adding a second B&G at the helm. However, I don't love how those look on 109's, 105's etc.

    HR 352 Electronics Upgrade

Hi all I recently bought an '86 Hallberg-Rassy 352, fully equipped. As we plan to cross the atlantic in a year or two, we are thinking about upgrading the electronics. Everything still works flawlessly, but I figure there must be newer (maybe better?) technology available. Most of the stuff ist about 20-30yrs old - but I'm pretty sure newer gear (especially the radar) is less power-hungry. Below what we have right now: Anemometer: Nexus NX2 Wind Data Sonar/Log Nexus NX Sea Data VHF Handheld «ICOM» VHF-Telephone «Ship Mate RS 8000» GPS Plotter «Ship Mate» GPS «Standard Horizon» Navtex «Nasa-Target» Radar «Furuno» (I don't know which model…) As mentioned previously, most of the stuff is about 20yrs old…What would you recommend we change? Do we need to change anything? Thanks for your help, Philipp
  6. I've been reading these forums for a bit so feel free to bring it on.. I am asking for my brother who doesn't know i'm posting on his behalf. He was a RN WEPS for 9 years and has been a IT network engineer for the last 15, what sort of course\training would he need to convert to installation and maintenance of systems on yachts. He would be available along the South UK coast. I'm looking at British Marine Membership already? I haven't got a missus or boat to post unless you want to see my cat..

    Chartplotter Install / Vulcan 7

My vintage Standard Horizon chartplotter shat the bed in a big way a couple weeks ago. I know it is vintage because nobody out there seems to service them and searches for things like "My Standard Horizon LCD screen has a meteor-shaped hole in the middle, WTF..." revealed nothing. They don't service their old chartplotters I am told. When I went to dig the old chartplotter out of its cubby by the chart table, I pulled up some duct tape that was holding a bunch of wiring in place. Holy Christ... it's a bunch of tiny color coded wires taped together, like the Lucas wiring harness on the ratty old MGB I owned in my teens. There wasn't a sano crimped, shrink wrapped connector in the bunch. So much for plug and play. This will be a solder and wire job. Most of the gear on the boat is older, but pretty good stuff - B&G H 1000 gear. It's bomber equipment, does what I need it to do for racing on the Chesapeake with boatspeed, SOG, true wind speed and direction. So I'd like to salvage that stuff and pair it to an inexpensive but reasonably capable chartplotter, the Vulcan 7. So how do I tie the older NMEA 0183 wind speed/direction, boat speed and depth transducers into the newer Vulcan 7, which is an NMEA 2000 system? The owner's manual is clear as day right up to the point where it says to tie the chartplotter's power line into a three watt fuse on the switch board. Then there's nothing helpful after that. I suspect the answer here involves buying something like a SimNet backbone cable with a bunch of T fittings on it, then trying to puzzle out all the tiny color coded wires from the wind, depth & speed equipment, and crimping, soldering and shrink wrapping plugs onto those wires and going from there. Not sure if I'm OCD enough to make that work. Any thoughts from the peanut gallery, including what drink goes best with the angst I'm suffering?
  8. Hi all, Asked this question a couple of years ago and might finally be getting around to implementing it. Thought I would see if anyone had come across anything new given how fast tech is moving. Looking at new electronics on our Farrier F25A trimaran. We will be using the boat for short handed coastal racing and cruising. Its a trailer boat and only 25ft so system needs to be reasonably lightweight, low power and cost effective. Ideally we would like displays for important numbers and integration with the nav / plotter. We are starting pretty much from scratch and looking for speed, depth, wind, giving us true wind direction. We also need a nav solution, either a plotter or tablet? We have used a laptop with charts loaded into open-cpn and then qt-vlm for routing before but have no chart table on board this time. We have a raymarine nmea 0183 tiller pilot to aid with manoeuvres and it would be nice to integrate it with the nav system. would be good to have a remote that can control the tillerpilot. I have seen the madmanmarine remotes. Would like displays in the cockpit with the ability to see the data when sat out on the Ama. Ideally good product support service in NZ and want it to last for a decent period of time. Thinking power from solar and a battery. We had been looking at the raymarine micronet stuff, but I'm not sure on this support as the models appear to have been around a long time now. Last time someone mentioned nexus stuff, but I believe they have been bought into Garmin? Also there is a NASA wireless wind system that seemed good value Open to all suggestions at this stage. cheers Dave
  9. I'm finalising the electronics for my new boat (JPK38 under construction) and have a question I'm hoping others have dealt with before: NKE gyropilot 2 with (mostly) NKE electronics and 2 x NKE MFDs (Multigraphic), one in the cockpit, one inside at the nav station. I am also considering a chartplotter (Which NKE does not make) and rather than put it at the nav station, I intend to install it in the cockpit, so it can serve bot has MFD for all NMEA0183 data as well as chartplotter, plus WIFI relay to the Ipad in the cabin (rain or shine a watertight chartplotter is more useful outside than an ipad). From my preliminary research: B&G Zeuss2 7" - my favourite - it speaks NMEA0183, the SailSteer page provides lots of sailing data and I like the chartplotter. However some functions may not be usable with an NKE system (such as autopilot); Interested in anyone using this, assume the sailing data comes through at same speed as on an NKE MFD. The Vulcan 7 FS - I think its features are sufficient for my needs, but it doesn't speak NMEA0183. Has anyone tried using this on an NMEA0183/NKE bus and if so how is the information timelag, if any? Any other recommendations/experiences of NKE with a third party MFD with chartpotter are welcome. Tomorrow I'll discuss this issue with the supplier/installer. p.s. - Once I complete the electronics pack I'll update my boat construction page with the full specs and rationale for the choices: New boat construction - JPK 38 FC Thanks Stuart
  10. I'm going to buy my dad a chartplotter for Christmas, between $500 and $1,000 (cheaper is better). He's been using little handheld GPS's ever since Loran went obsolete, and I think his life would be a lot easier with a plotter. really just needs basic navigation and hopefully a fairly easy interface. He's not looking to put any holes in the hull so an in-hull depth transducer would be nice, but the old depthfinder still works so that's not an absolute must. He also has an '80s Furuno radar system, something backwards compatible would be nice but I'm guessing that's not gonna happen. What would you guys recommend? Anyone want to share good or bad experiences with something that fits those requirements?

    Yachting Electronics from China?

Hi guys, I know currently not the best time to ask for stuff that is not manufactured in the US. But as this is probably true for most naval electronics, I was wondering if there are some no name alternatives from China. I mean for all expensively branded shit like action cams, drones and whatsoever there is a reliable and well working Chinese alternative. Why not for yachting stuff? Given that Far East Yachts seem to work well, and that most of the fancy production stuff from McCon also comes from mainland China, why is there no navigation/wind/boatsspeed stuff coming from there? Or do I just miss something? Do I really need to pay 5 grant to get a WiFi wind transmitter, some server and displays or is there another alternative? Any recommendations, experiences or insults why I am a dumbfucker that is ruining the economy are warmly welcomed. Cheers
