    A-Class foiling sailors

    Hi A-Class foilers, I start this thread to have a forum for some basic how-to exchange on foiling A-Class catamarans. I am proud new owner of a DNA F1x catamaran (for single handed sailing) and also sail a Whisper catamaran (works best with crew) for the third season. I am a weekend recreational club-sailor, who loves cool technology and nature at the same time. However, I still have to figure out if and when there is ever enough time to prep and sail the first club regatta. Hence you will find my priorities more on how to mount a gopro, rather then regatta starting-line tactics ;-) Just to get this thread kicked-off, here is a video from my first time sailing with the DNA F1x. I have to say that I was very pleased with the smooth and easy boat handling, the clean deck, the powerful boomless sail, and the stable flight in little winds. And of course the speed. I hit 20kts boat speed on my first day at low winds (18kts speed were captured on gopro) - and I am still at the beginning of learning the boat handling and trimming. cool! FG

    Buying a moth

    Hey, I am currently sailing on a Laser and a Seascape 18. Now I want to buy a fast singlehanded foiling dinghy, just to have some fun and learn a bit about foiling. Now I don't want to spend a lot of money (<5000$). My original idea was to buy a cheap used moth, probably an older homebuilt one and gradually upgrade it with newer components (I am willing to spend some time in the workshop). Now that I´ve read a bit more on how to best get started with moth sailing, I am not sure whether this is the brightest of all of my ideas. Another option would be buying an A-Cat and upgrading it with foils later. Now as far as I know foils on A-Cats don't unfold their real potential cause of the class rule so its a foiler but not entirely and of course a moth is way easier to get from a to b via road. I have considered stuff like the UFO or WASZP (last one is a little too expensive) but I don't have a problem with things being complicating and having to figure stuff out, I would like a bit of a challenge and think that for example an UFO would get boring to quickly. So what are your thoughts? Is 5000$ to little for what I want and should I just wait until I have more to spend? What about Moth vs A-Cat? Is there anything else out there that could be interesting for me? Looking forward to good answers! Ben

    Foilers: brushing off seaweeds?

    What do you carry on board to make quick work of seaweed slowing you down? Ideally something small and simple, appropriate for an 18f small light cat. (Sometimes we can avoid it, sometimes we cut right through it, and sometimes we just get tangled with it.)

    Hello to everyone, I am an amateur sailor, having done some dingue sailing when I was young and some Hobiecat leisure sailing during vacations. I would like to start foiling. I know that it could be quite hard even for experienced sailors at the beginning, but is there maybe a foiling boat that is not very difficult for beginners? Thanks
  8. 2018 moth worlds are coming soon around Easter time in Bermuda. Pretty envious to those that are going, that has to be a pretty special place to sail (well expenses to go there make it pretty special as well); entry numbers won't be the same as Garda, but most top guns should be there. few people from Italy, but I think the whole UK class will get in a cointainer to go there In the meantime, while in Europe we are all busy doing useless upgrades, I guess the Aussie season is getting hot. Any news from down under?
  9. The AC boats clearly had no in-water transducers. Moths, same. Olympic boats, same. So clearly, one need not have thru-hull transducers to compete at the very highest levels. So who has developed / seen / used a high performance sailing instrumentation system with no thru-hull transducers?

    Foiling Week Miami 2018

    I have just seen on the Foiling Week website they plan to host an event at Shake-A-Leg in Miami on Feb 15th-18th. They don't have many details posted on their website, I wondered if anyone knew anything about this/what classes will be there? Also does anyone know who they will include as the keynote speakers at the Forum - I have heard these are always pretty good at their events in Garda. Its great to see them having an event here as their events in Italy look pretty good, just too far away for me! Any of the Miami crowd know anything?
  12. (... now that I'm foiling to some level of competence... :-) ) Our bay has a few obstructions affecting our wind patterns (notably, Key Biscayne / Bear Cut). When sailing or foiling upwind with enough speed that AW is dominant, it's damn hard to spot or explore windshifts. For any upwind course, we speed up until start of the stall and "the system reaches an equilibrium": slow down, better AW angle, speed up more of the sail stalls. If I was to "follow the telltales" I'd end up sailing downwind. So we keep our course while scannning the water and other signs, but the only way to test for shifts is to point up a bit, sensing for the speed drop. This has some negative aspects... if the speed drop comes from a lull, you bear away pointlessly if you're foiling and you drop off the foils you pay a significant price to get back up (bear away, find speed... ) Is there a better way? Points for on-the-water practical experience (I sure had solid-sounding ideas on land about it...) Tagging some apparent wind sailors I know of @A Class Sailor @samc99us @Charlie P Mayer @David Clark

  14. The NACRA 17 and even the NACRA 15 have gone to foiling technology, but those are one-designs. Of course the A Cats have had it for a while and did a lot of the experimentation and development for foiling beach cats, so there is a precedent for an existing box-rule class to permit the use of foils. Will the F18 or F16 classes be adopting foiling technology? Or, will they be denying it to keep the large numbers of existing boats competitive? If they choose not to go there will we eventually see a new box-rule beachcat formula that is close in size to the 18, which remains popular for larger crews? Would adopting foiling effectively split the F18 class into two halves, the pre-foiling and post-foiling boats, and hurt people with older boats like Tigers that still want to race them? Just wondering what people who know more about this (like active F18 or F16 racers) think. How does the NACRA 17 do with heavier crews? The stated optimum crew weight (from for the Mixed Multihull class) is just over 300lbs. 400lb crew seems like what F18 (and above) are built for.

  16. I am having a blast on my Whisper cat. One are I am finding it tricky is stable runs on spinnaker, from reach or tight reach. Lately we've been having light winds (~8kt); in these winds under spinnaker we build up nice speed -- flying in apparent wind -- to about 8kt, which is for me easy takeoff speed. And we do take off :-) -- but as we speed up (ie 13kt, perhaps with an assist from a gust) we get to the point where the spinnaker luffs. Even if we avoid a complete luff -- we lose speed quickly, and the apparent wind is gone. As things stand, we have exhilarating runs of a few minutes, followed by a slowdown. We pick ourselves up and go at it again. Is there a technique to get to a stable dynamic?
  17. Ride Height Set the ride height adjusters to 3 mm as measured between the top of the white edge of the foil and the bottom of the black trailing edge of the foil when the wand is straight down. Tighten the ride height nut fully, then undo the nut one quarter turn (just enough that you can adjust your ride height). Foil Rake For racing, setting the foils asymmetrically is optimal (say 2.5 windward, 3.5 leeward), but when first learning to foil set them the same bilaterally. Interestingly, it is necessary to set the foils with a higher rake for fresh water than for seawater due to the lower density of fresh water. For seawater, learn to foil at first with the foil rake set at 3 bilaterally; For fresh water, 4 bilaterally. Running with an Even Keel “The most important thing is the boat must be flat to foil.” Like a plane taking off, the wings will provide the most lift when parallel to the surface. Twin Trapeze Having both captain and crew out on the trapeze is the easiest way to foil. The crew uses the main sheet to maintain their stance on the hull while the captain uses the traveler (but do not uncleat the traveler). Beam Reach While you are on a beam reach going near your max speed, let the mainsail out slightly and you should start to foil. Avoiding Windward Capsize Once you start to foil, it is likely the mast will tip windward. When this happens, do not point more into the wind as you will luff and lose power in the mainsail. When foiling, your speed will increase and the apparent wind will shift forward. Sheeting in the main should apply more force leeward and avoid capsize.

    Telescopic Wand experiments

    When it is not scratched, or perforated with holes that need patching, my catamaran is a foiling beast. The foils are controlled by a wand setup, a bit like a moth, which can be seen here - (warning! it's a post by Doug Lord :-) -- just look at the pics). The control system has adjustments for ride height -- but I want to improve on them with wand-length control. However, I have some hard constraints, as the foil still needs to fit through the foil case, etc. Moth style wand length control won't work here. Control needs to be brought to the top of the foil. The black rod in the pic is about 7mm, and I might be able to squeeze in an 8mm rod in there. Thoughts? Examples of systems others have built? My harebrained scheme is one with a telescopic setup and a control cable... - a 7mm or 8mm acetal or nylon tube, 5mm ID, with a narrow cut along, the length of the telecoping distance - a 5mm rod - acetal or nylon, inserted in the tube, with a screw screwed that "runs" along the cut in the tube to control telescoping and rotation - a push/pull cable control system, running inside the tube, then inside the foil (which has some internal tubes)
  20. Two races held in consistent 20knot South Easter and wind against tide short chop on Bramble Bay, Moreton Bay, Brisbane. A lively ride for skippers. Eight out of twenty braved the conditions with Steve Brewin taking both wins. Forecast is for 15 knots today and slightly less on Sunday. Four races today in morning and afternoon sessions. Will post more results plus hopefully images and a video when able.

    Weight Placement on Foiling Catamarans

    Greetings! First post on Sailing Anarchy. I have absolutely no experience foiling and would appreciate tapping into the collective wisdom/experience of this forum. I'd like to see if I have a good grasp of crew weight placement on a foiling catamaran. Hoping to receive my White Formula Whisper next week. Props to Martin and Charlie P. Mayer for their very helpful videos.     Whisper Foiling Cat in Miami FL

    Couple months ago a Whisper landed in Miami, where Biscayne Bay and local weather provide for great foiling opportunities :-) I see there's plenty of interest in foiling around here, and a lively Stunt S9 discussion. So I thought I'd start a thread on Whisper sailing (leaving behind the theoretical/flamey old Whisper thread). To be frank, I'm hoping to see a community of practice and knowledge grow around small/easy foilers. Love what I see about the S9 for single-handling; I'm loving my Whisper. So here's my contribution: I'm documenting what I'm learning, and hoping to spark discussion. Rigging videos Sailing - we've had a slow start at foiling (for many reasons), but getting better at it now Rigging notes Along the way, WhiteFormula folks -- makers of the Whisper -- have been incredibly helpful. So -- have you sailed a Whisper? How did it go? Did you change anything in the rig? Any questions about the boat? I'll try to answer to best of my abilities :-)
