  1. Hello fellow moth sailors, while waiting for warmer weather I am considering some winter tuning projects for my Mach2.2. In context of the trend to low mast stumps and recently also decksweeper style sails the following questions have come up: Do the decksweeper style sails use a significantly shorter mast or how do they get around the maximum sail dimension as measured from the throat point in the rules? Do you think the small advantage of an endplate effect really outweighs the drawbacks regarding aspect ratio of the sail and heavily disturbed flow on a significant part of the sail area? In addition to cutting down the mast stump on my boat with KA sail and Mach2 mast there seems to be some space to cut down the mast, too - even with full cunningham there is some distance between the sail and the boom. Is that reasonable or not a very good idea? I am looking forward to hear some opinions!
  2. Hi, Yesterday I finally made a first attempt to sail my Ninja. Water temperature had raised to an adequate level. Wind was in the 9 -11 knts. So: good conditions. However I basically failed at stepping and staying in the boat. Capsizing over and over :-). I had watched the videos I could find, but would not have believed it would be that hard for me. Have to think about it hard, because I'm in a small sailing club, without security on the water. So I have to be sure to be able to go and come back alone (no real risks for life as it is a closed space, but...risks for the boat and significant burden). And no other moth sailors around to discuss face to face. My findings: only one swimming noodle at the end of each wing does not looks enough for a beginner. Was dreaming of modern Moth bladders... No wang = no support from the sail when waterstarting. I discovered that the hard way toward the end of the session, When I right the boat, the boat tilts OK up to above horizontal, and then it is difficult to get the winward wing in the water top waterstart. It seems that there is water in the leeward wing. So windward wing is too high and I can't step in... I'm looking for advices to do much better next time: What is the easiest way to jump in the boat: jump into the boat, over the wing, at tilting point (seems pretty high, but didn't tried yesterday) - or "waterstart" (swimming in the boat ? is it normal not to be able to drop easily the windward wing in the water to swim in ? From what could it come: my dacron tramps (watertight) ? boat's heading relative to the wind ? Is it possible to train by low wind or not really a good idea because low stabilization from the wind in the sail ? Any video to see how people do (I have those from Nathan Outterridge, provela, ENVSN)? Tricks to attach swimming noodles below the tramp ? Are Dacron tramps standard or can it be an issue? Other beginner's difficulty, unstepping the mast after the session. I relase some slack in the forestay, then the mast tilts toward the back and it is difficult to make it vertical again and get out of the pin at the mast base. Are there trick to make it easy, or is it related to not anymore enough juice from the sailor :-) And any other advice warmely welcomed !!!! Best regards, JMF

    Buying a moth

Hey, I am currently sailing on a Laser and a Seascape 18. Now I want to buy a fast singlehanded foiling dinghy, just to have some fun and learn a bit about foiling. Now I don't want to spend a lot of money (<5000$). My original idea was to buy a cheap used moth, probably an older homebuilt one and gradually upgrade it with newer components (I am willing to spend some time in the workshop). Now that I´ve read a bit more on how to best get started with moth sailing, I am not sure whether this is the brightest of all of my ideas. Another option would be buying an A-Cat and upgrading it with foils later. Now as far as I know foils on A-Cats don't unfold their real potential cause of the class rule so its a foiler but not entirely and of course a moth is way easier to get from a to b via road. I have considered stuff like the UFO or WASZP (last one is a little too expensive) but I don't have a problem with things being complicating and having to figure stuff out, I would like a bit of a challenge and think that for example an UFO would get boring to quickly. So what are your thoughts? Is 5000$ to little for what I want and should I just wait until I have more to spend? What about Moth vs A-Cat? Is there anything else out there that could be interesting for me? Looking forward to good answers! Ben
  4. 2018 moth worlds are coming soon around Easter time in Bermuda. http://www.mothworlds.org/bermuda/ Pretty envious to those that are going, that has to be a pretty special place to sail (well expenses to go there make it pretty special as well); entry numbers won't be the same as Garda, but most top guns should be there. few people from Italy, but I think the whole UK class will get in a cointainer to go there In the meantime, while in Europe we are all busy doing useless upgrades, I guess the Aussie season is getting hot. Any news from down under?

    Moth Developement

hey guys so i have been thinking about what people can actually do to make moths faster and to be honest, i cant think of too many more ways that moths can be improved a whole lot everyone is spending so much time fixing wind drag, which in the scheme of things is only making the tinyest of differences from what i heard about the Garda worlds, the decksweeper main and fairing was not the best and just got in the way, but it looks like the sail is of good use (outteridge is using it at the moment) i'm not too sure how much better the latest foils are nowadays, but i've heard that there is not too much that is improving and i don't believe the hulls make a whole lot of difference when they are up and going so my question is, hat are people working on, or what could people work on to make the moth a faster boat? and also, is match 2 being overtaken by exocets now? or do the better sailors just like to look special?
  6. The AC boats clearly had no in-water transducers. Moths, same. Olympic boats, same. So clearly, one need not have thru-hull transducers to compete at the very highest levels. So who has developed / seen / used a high performance sailing instrumentation system with no thru-hull transducers?

    Moth goosneck fitting

Have anyone seen this goosneck fitting in action? It's quite impressive that they were able to build it strong enough. As far as I understand, it works just like a camber in the sail, but what keeps it in place? How does it not move up and down? http://3dsailing.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/FullSizeRender.jpg http://3dsailing.co.uk/products

    Foiling Stability and Control

Hello Foil Anarchists, My name is David Busch, Bend, Oregon (roots in Michigan) My research is centered around Foiling Stability & Control (both sailing and powered) FSC engineering to master Yaw, Pitch & Roll alone is hard work. Coupled to self-righting it is a moonshot. This thread asks one simple question… “What does the Global Community want out of Foiling in the next 5 -10 years?” To Foil more? Go even Faster? Master Stability and Control? Traverse blue water over great distances? To capsize - turn turtled and call for rescue, once again…? If your interested reshaping your sport, read on people. My intent of this New Topic is to stimulate debate in the community so that “we” as the “whole community” can navigate this beast of Foiling Stability and Control. I will bring my research video tape to this forum. In addition to imagery, I will bring spirited debate, when needed. My Design Process is simple; First, learn to master Stability and Control under electric power first. Second, add the sail. My sailing logbook includes: Semi-pro Windsurfer and shaper, Live-aboard on Downeaster 38, Scow racer, Kiteboarder on water and snow, Blue water Tri racing Corsair 24 and 31 (I’m a sailplane and power Pilot as well) Website: http://www.travacedesign.com https://vimeo.com/42547598 https://vimeo.com/191635853 I work at Epic Aircraft, LLC as Principal Designer, Check out our all Carbon fiber, Turboprop. This high performance time-machine is very close to achieving FAA Type Certification. http://epicaircraft.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidbbusch

  16. Im thinking about making spectra standing rigging for a moth. Ill be using Marlow's D-12 which i have had previous with. Would it work well and hold enough tension to be a decent replacement for wire? My rationale is its cheaper than wire and easier to make. Also locking it onto the spreaders would be easier and they wouldn't be able to slip around. Obviously the downsides are it could stretch and making sure they are all the same length.
