    Single-handed cruising options

I'm new to this, all of this... I sailed sunfish at boy scout camp for a week about 15 years ago, then went on the Chesapeake for an afternoon in a beneteau. Now I'm crewing for a friend on his Pearson 424, and the first night out we had gusts over 35kts and a significant wave height of 10'. I want to get into single-handed dinghy cruising and I've been checking the forums. Most people don't have an interest in what I'm looking for, so it's hard to find. I want something comparable to a wayfarer, which is hard to say having never seen one. My neighbor has had an albacore parked in the driveway since his son passed almost 20 years ago. I'm thinking about making an offer, but want some input as to what might better suit my "needs." Models I'm considering: Wayfarer, Flying Scot, Buccaneer, Paceshup Alouette, Pumpkin Seed, and Albacore. I'm not looking for a racing boat like a laser, but something robust, fast, forgiving, open (no, no O'Days, etc.), 15+', trailerable, single-handed (even if it's with practice), and "spacious..." Does the albacore even come close? Budget is $1500, tops, but I'm willing to do some beefing up, re-rigging, modifying, etc. I've been looking into this for a bit, but wanted to put it forward. Is there something I'm missing? I'm looking to do extended offshore sailing, starting in the Bay, then maybe the Great Lakes, after I get off this roller coaster.

    Weather apps & Online courses

Anybody got good links to weather class links and weather apps, I'm willing to pay for a weather app
  3. I have a question and hope to get some wisdom. In the Offshore special regulations this year under Section 4 22 for Category 2 races a new requirement was added under 1 b) "An AIS personal crew overboard beacon for each crew member" What devices commercially available are compliant. Anyone knows?

    2019 Transpac

Hey all. Looking to do the 2019 transpac... Already posted on the transpac crew bank but figured I'd stick as many feelers out as I can. Any leads on other forums or people to bother? 20 year old Canadian male, plently of inshore racing experience. Went offshore for my first time last year taking TP52 "Kinetic V" back to Vancouver from the 2017 transpac. I work full time as a first mate on charter boats, and do a little bit of work for a rigging company on the side so have a fair amount of boat knowledge and maintenance/fixing skills. Erik

    OFFSHORE SOLO RACER

Hello, Sorry to probably be asking a question that has been asked hundreds of time, i've followed tho forum for ages now but just became a member. I am seeking input on an offshore singlehanded racer, I would love a Figaro II but they are out of my budget and cant find one here in the USA. I am looking for a boat that flies an asymmetrical kite, hard chines, open transom and is under $50k. I know this probably doesn't exist in my price range but I am throwing it out to the wolves to go after. If you have any suggestions please let me know, I know I have left out a lot in this post, but due to there probably being 100+ posts on this I didn't want to waste time.
  8. I'll be participating in this years Newport Bermuda race and could use some recommendations on offshore weather routing software. Expedition seems to be popular choice but its expensive and our crew is fairly new to this type of software so it may be overkill. We're considering Predict Wind but the more I research the more options I've found. What applications and features do you recommend. Some of the wishlist features that I'm looking for are: Reasonably priced (does not necessarily mean cheap) Relatively easy to learn (at least the key pieces) Simple downloads of grib files, gulf stream data, wind, temp, etc Optimal course plotting based on weather (including Gulf Stream info) and polars IOS (iPad) is ideal but Mac software is a possibility Charting during the race that shows expected and actual positions Are there other features that I should include on this list??? Are there other features that I should add to my functionality wish list? What do you think of Predict Wind and what am I missing compared to Expedition? Are there other apps to consider? Thanks for your help
  9. I'm planning for this year's Newport Bermuda race and could use some advice. What specific weather data would you consider essential given the limitations of file size via satellite download? Some of the data on my list: Pre Race Gulf Stream High Rez Files for data below Water Temp (how frequently does this change?) Satellite imagery Wind speeds During The Race Forecast Charts Air temp Wind & Gusts Pressure Grib 500 mb & 10 mb Current What are your thoughts on forecast models? GFS? ECM? Etc. Thanks for the help.
  10. Can you ID this boat? A friend of mine came across it off of Honduras yesterday. No distress message. No inmarsat message to be on the look out. No debris. No growth on the hull.
  11. Hi all, I've been sailing with dad since my early teens, and over the last year in lasers and now on a J24 to learn how to sail on larger vessels. I'm still undergoing instruction and practice sessions but my dream would be to circumnavigate Australia one day. I'm 33 and will likely purchase a smaller boat for my own local cruises until I feel somewhat ready enough to buy something more capable of sailing on open ocean. Can anyone advise on their first experience buying a boat for sailing open ocean / coastal waters? What makes a sailboat sea worthy of the open ocean? What features should I be keeping an eye out for? Many thanks, Benj
  12. The crew and I are still leaning to sail our new Melges 24 (hull 161), Run Rabbit Run Reloaded (R4), and with light wind on the race course in the bay we decided to blow off the Wednesday night beer can race last week so we head offshore where there was a good breeze and loads of grey whales. We never found the whales but we did find a bloom of Sea Nettles, and a most glorious sunset. It is very rare to get 70F temps, light wind and a calm sea off the north Oregon Coast, check it out:

    Musto LPX for offshore racing

I'm doing Newport- Bermuda next year and was wondering if the Musto LPX GTX Jacket would be enough to get me there dry. I was thinking of doing an LPX Jacket with the MPX Trousers.

    zhik aroshell durability

How durable is the Zhik Aroshell smock? I know it's a 3 layer laminate but could it be used for coastal racing and some offshore?
  15. Perhpas a bit early for this sort of post but whatever! Looking for a boat (either race or cruise) that is looking to cross the Atlantic this upcoming Winter. I have a lot of experience from both offshore and inshore, and on everything from small dinghies to large race yachts such as AC boats, Open 60, Class 40 etc. And everything in between. Also done a few delivery as both crew and skipper (no Yachtmaster license though). Have a lot of safety education in commercial shipping (basic safety and military graded safety courses, among other things) and several years education and work with engineering on large container vessel. Day job atm is driving a ferry on the Swedish West Coast.

    Offshore Olympic Sailing?

From the 'I'll believe it when I see it' department: https://www.seahorsemagazine.com/107-content/april-2017/472-showcase-olympic-offshore-sailing There's a possibility of seeing Offshore sailing in the 2020 (Tokyo) Games. The plan seems to be 9-12m boats, manufacturer-supplied. 3-4 days sailing, with live-updating video and tracker. More info from the Oceanic and Offshore Committee Minutes, point 16 (from Nov 2016, so maybe slightly out-of-date): https://members.sailing.org/tools/documents/2016OC1011-[21685].pdf

    Branning's Been Busy

Badass navigator, Disney Morning Light alum, and active-duty rescue pilot Chris Branning has been busy working in his spare time on something very cool for anyone who relies on GRIB files to cruise or race. It's an app that provides a way to significantly increase the accuracy of your GRIBs, and hence significantly decrease your time on a passage or around a race course. It's all hieroglyphics to a handle and rope monkey like me, but the details are here. He's put together a page with useful links for navigators in Tuesday's St. Pete Havana Race and the Miami Havana Race in March over here. He invited people using expedition to drop him a line on Facebook (or probably also via the contact form on the Model Accuracy website) to learn about the system his team has created to make you a winning navigator.
