      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

  1. Thistle Running Rigging

Does anyone have a suggested list of diameter, lengths and material suggested for a Thistle? I just bought one and looks like all I have is a main halyard. FUN!
  2. I'm looking to see if anyone has successfully moved the spinn halyard hoist higher on a fractional rig? If so how did you do it? The boat is an Impala 28 and we need bigger kite to improve offwind speed. I want to get the sail area as high as I can without damaging the rig. In the pic (not my boat) you can see the upper mast is light on support so two questions; 1. How high can I go and still have strength? + especially on tight reach + section at top is approx 2 meters 2. What is the best method of getting the halyard hoist higher? + external halyard on block? + move existing sheave? Racing is under IRC, mix of W/L and round the cans. 75% of races under 15knts and mostly flat water or small chop. Competition is J24's, Quarter Tonners, Formula 28's... Thoughts please :-)
  3. DIY Wing Mast Questions

Guys, I've been curious about wing masts for ages, & am wondering what the more common methods for attaching stays & shrouds are any more? I know that on say PRB there are holes through the mast tube for Spectra (Dyneema) Loops, to which the stays are attached. And on other boats there are stainless rotator hounds. The question is, what's the most reliable method of attaching one's stays, including a furler for the jib? How often do various components need swapping so that the mast doesn't suffer any failures & fall? Plus any other key questions I forgot to ask/need to know when seriously considering building one. Obviously the tech & options as to how to attach shrouds, stays, & other structural bits have advanced quite a bit in the last few years. With a plethora of options for soft attachments using Dyneema, & fittings akin to Ropeye & other soft padeyes. That said, please pretend that I know naught about what's available, & help me to get educated on this. Both self-educated, & schooled by wizened sailors & riggers. Bottom line, what are the better routes to pursue if starting from scratch, to build a DIY wing mast for a cat or tri in the 30'-45' LOA range? Also, what are the pro's & con's of various options & configurations. And any & all links to relavent info pages, or hardware connected to this topic would be greatly welcomed. Thanks! PS: I'm thinking wood/epoxy, or wood/epoxy with some carbon. But not a purely carbon spar. With halyards for a: mainsail, jib, solent/staysail, code 0/screecher, & a spinnaker. And structural furlers are an option to some degree. Oh, & I'm primarily thinking of designs setup for synthetic rigging. Although wire stays aren't ruled out.
  4. Strange sounds from the boat

Hi guys i'm a new member from Denmark (english is my second language obviously) I bought the boat a some months back, and have been out sailing a couple of times, but now i got a pretty serious issue (i think, i'm afraid to go sailing again before I how serious it is). During af sailing trip (wind was about 6m/s at the time) a strange sound began to occur. However, only when the wind come from the port side. When I got into the harbor again the sound was still there, it comes and disappears. I suspect some issues with the port side shrouds, as the sound was only there when i have the wind coming in from portside. When I was in port I could feel the shrouds at the same time as the sound. I discovered that they vibrated a little easily when the sound was there. when i got back in the harbor i recorded the sound (just follow the link) Have you guys heard this sound before? Thank you in advance Sincerely A distressed sailor
  5. Wooden Mast & rigging

Hey all, I have a Mower-style Alpha Dory complete hull just need to get mast, spars, rigging and sails. Can anyone recommend a shop or shops in the Chicago area or even Southern Michigan area? This is an 18'6" boat that is most traditionally gaff rigged. Thanks all! BTW she's also for sale if somebody wants to finish they way they want it.
  6. In contemplating the ongoing restoration of Lioness, the > 50 Yr old spars are one item that should yield measurable sailing improvements. Currently they are tapered, external halyard, mast mounted winches, single spreader and heavy section and have custom welded SS masthead fittings Probably state of the art for 1962, the art has moved on down the road a bit, with materials and design improvements. Original 1958 main mast design which is on Lioness is: I(IG): 42.50' / 12.95m J: 15.70' / 4.79m P: 36.60' / 11.16m E: 17.20' / 5.24m after about 10 yrs it was bumped up on the Mk-II to: I(IG): 44.50' / 13.56m J: 15.60' / 4.75m P: 38.50' / 11.73m E: 16.10' / 4.91m and the final was the Mk III, which also had more ballast and moved the mast 2' aft, which is a level of surgery I'd prefer NOT to do. I(IG): 49.00' / 14.94m J: 17.40' / 5.30m P: 42.40' / 12.92m E: 12.00' / 3.66m Other than replacing with a new (lighter?) aluminum extrusion and internal halyards & tangs, what spar/rigging features would show good benefit? Sailing on SFBay we don't generally feel underpowered, though on some evening sails there are moments when 4-6 at the masthead is less than fun. These seem obvious: Feature Benefits Replace material Eliminate concern on hidden corrosion, accumulated fatigue in section and fittings Move winches off mast Lower CG, allow jumping halyards, sharing winches via clutches, can handle from cockpit not mast Knowledge of moments Better understanding on tuning limits for bend Lighter/smaller Masthead Lower CG, lower windage Internal halyards less windage, less UV exposure there are some that may be applicable: Feature Benefits New alloy Better strength/stiffness to weight? (CARBON would be here?) New Extrusion profile Better stiffness to weight, controlled flex Synthetic standing rigging Lighter, lower CG Double Spreaders stiffer/lighter section? inboard Chainplates narrower tacking angle, genoa fits inboard lifelines
  7. Turnbuckle Lubricant

Suggestions for lubricating a bronze backstay adjuster?
  8. How to tie soft shackles

How to tie soft shackles - new vid released yesterday by UK's Yachting Monthly magazine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWz_DIXx-Wc Seems OK to me. I didn't actually realize it was that simple.
  9. Im thinking about making spectra standing rigging for a moth. Ill be using Marlow's D-12 which i have had previous with. Would it work well and hold enough tension to be a decent replacement for wire? My rationale is its cheaper than wire and easier to make. Also locking it onto the spreaders would be easier and they wouldn't be able to slip around. Obviously the downsides are it could stretch and making sure they are all the same length.
  10. What's This?

Ran across this nice bit of boat jewelry today. First to guess gets a fine piece of Kauri wood from Meli/Bridget.
  11. Hi all, New member here with a question about the construction of the Low Friction Ring on a Dyneema loop. For a winter time project, I've decided to learn to splice Dyneema lines working up to making soft-shackles and my own low-friction rings with the dyneema loops. e.g. http://www.antal.it/ENG/rl40_ring__loop_en Can someone explain to me how these are made? Is a continuous loop first made and then seized using dyneema whipping twine to secure the ring? Thanks for your help and for letting me join. Christine
  12. Dynex Dux vs. New England STS

I've done plenty of splicing and mucking around with 12-strand but I've not handled or spliced Dynex Dux or STS. Both are heat stretched dyneema and both have very similar specs. I'm approaching a wire replacement project. Any meaningful differences in these two products? Thanks.
