I posted this in another thread, but it really deserves its own topic. According to an article in the NYT, as recently as 2015, Russia gained access to US power plants through cyber attacks. They reportedly engaged in snooping on operations, planned sabotage strategies and could shut down power to Americans like they did to the Ukraine when they invaded. These attacks were at the same time they were ramping up social media efforts to disrupt our elections, empower and invigorate militant right wing groups and fund the NRA’s political action efforts. They tried to split Bernie supporters off from the Democratic Party, supported efforts to increase hatred of Hillary (spectacularly effective with many PA posters) and helped assist Trump in getting elected. Anerica will at some point wake up, but we are very vulnerable at this point to Russia’s chosen weapons. We are in a war and haven’t realized it yet. At stake is the fate of democratic governments and civilized international leadership. Thanks to the anemic, fractured response to Russian involvement in our elections, the Trump administration and the current GOP leadership has left us vulnerable to these attacks which constitute a growing national security breach of enormous importance. Investigations into Hillary, the FBI and a tax giveaway to the rich have distracted these idiots from the snake in the grass. That Trump and Nunes have effectively assisted these efforts is well recognized, it only needs to be determined whether or not they did so for political gain, out of arrogance or as part of a ridiculous scheme to plant the Trump flag on a hotel in Moscow is not known and should be investigated. The GOP and Trump specifically have accepted million$ of rubles from the NRA that was most probably enabled by enormous donations from a Russian oligarch/ Putin ally: whether this constitutes collusion or just manipulation of our elections should be investigated The American people deserve to know how vulnerable our power grid is to foreign manipulation, whether and how much our safety is threatened by these efforts, who was responsible and how can we defend ourselves. Wake up, guys, we are under attack. Our leaders have been asleep at the wheel or steering us unwittingly towards disaster. Insist on better stewardship now, before it’s too late. Think of this as October 1941.
So, why DID the NRA receive so much money from Russia in 2016? This Torshin guy is an interesting figure, with extensive ties to Russian mafia, Russia's president, and Russian rubles being laundered in Spain (a three year investigation proved fruitless, so that's just speculation.) In any case, he's a banker with solid Putin ties. And "because he loves guns" Mr Torshin is at the center of the NRA's recent spending spree on the American election. The NRA broke previous records in 2016, donating a record $55 million to pro-Trump and anti-Hillary forces. Notably, the NRA has not disavowed receiving much of this money from Torshin, but making statements like "We have not been contacted by the FBI about anything related to Russia." Statements which pointedly do not deny the substance of the allegations. The NRA isn't allowed to accept foreigner's money to be used to influence American elections. But with a wink and a nod, they could spend Torshin's rubles on mundane activities which benefit members, say, or go into executives' pockets, and then spend money originally intended for those purposes on the election cycle. All legal, unless a conspiracy to defraud the US election system is proven, which is a long stretch. I've got to wonder if this is the overt side of Russia trying to disrupt our elections, knowing that the NRA would fund Trump and defeat the Obama/Hillary axis of sanctions that was so annoying to Putin. Marco Rubio (NRA A+ guy) got $3.3M. Tump got 10 times that. Torshin met Trump at the 2016 NRA Convention, and sat at his table during one of the dinners. Pretty expensive access, but it worked to get a seat at the table. The NRA also has member's lists, as well as myriad "followers", creating a likely starting point for social networking tapping some of our most ardent gun-loving Americans. With a few searches, armed white supremacists could be located, and funding them might prove even more fun for Russians looking to destabilize America. Remember those threats to start a little war/have riots if Trump's election bid was unsuccessful (because the vote was rigged)? That's exactly their style. Throw in some money, some cheap guns & ammo... might have a nice little terrorist incident. If not? No harm. Just a few million rubles. That's cheap to these guys.
