      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

  1. Good day. For many years I have done fore deck on my 8mR where, due to a measurement rule, our spin pole is bigger than "J" and hence we end for end during gybes. I have now moved to the back of the bus and our new fore deck wants a carbon pole for reason that don't make sense. Since the pole is supported with a topping lift connected to a bridle, there is no weight of the pole that needs to be addressed during the gybe. A lighter pole might be easier to raise and lower but we have the topping lift on a winch if needed. In addition, the boat weights 20,000lbs so I don't see how a few pounds difference in a spin pole really makes a difference. Is there any performance or other reasons why I should spend the $3500.00 (CDN) for a carbon pole or should I stay with Aluminum?
  2. So we have not a whole lot of spinnaker work with our new to us boat except for cruising. We just haven't gotten to the point of having enough consistent crew to do anything but the JAM division; until now. If things keep up we'll switch sections later this summer but practice up until then which brings me to the point. Its a 36' boat set up for dip pole jibes with a 14.5' aluminum pole. The car on the mast track for the pole has a spring pin instead of a block and line system. Even with the inboard end of the pole at the max height on the track (which you have to be probably close to 6' to reach) the outboard end won't clear the forestay foil at the height it passes over the pulpit. You have to bring the outboard end across by lifting it up about 6" to clear the pulpit, dropping it 6" to clear the foil, and then lifting it back up and over the pulpit on the other side. I read about a few unique techniques a while ago when I came across the "new bowman" thread but was wondering if anyone else has seen this and/or know of a way to deal with it? Could the person at the mast just pop out the butt end of the pole, pull it aft while swinging through, and then push it forward and plug it back in once made and on the other side?
  3. Are they making sails without stitching now? Super seamstick only? I heard something about this for spinnakers but it sounds a bit wacky.
  4. So there is a big debate going on around the northeast regarding the Pixel and the RS Feva. What are your thoughts?.. ready GO!
  5. I after pictures and info on the Elliott 770 retracting spinnaker pole set up. I have a Elliott 7.4 that has no anchor locker and the standard symmetrical spin. I want to make an anchor locker the same as the 770 and while building it and designing it for a retracting spin pole for an asymmetrical spinnaker. I'm building in the interior now and I want to build it from the outset with the rope guides for the retracting prodder.
  6. Guys, where can I find 4" spin pole tubing that isn't stupid expensive? The spec's on it wouldn't hurt if anyone has them handy too. As I may be building a pole soon, & the APS price is a bit steep. Also, any tips on shipping the stuff other than to try & have it hitch a ride with a boat or mast in transport? Thanks BTW, what's Santa's source for 4" carbon fiber tubing as well?
  7. I'm a volunteer for Lake Champlain PHRF. We are all un-paid and try to do our best to encourage handicap racing on our beautiful lake. We need to revise our rules to provide adjustments for asymmetrical spinnakers on boats that were originally designed for symmetrical spinnakers. We are looking at adapting the NE PHRF guidelines. They talk about bow-tacked spinnakers, but we have noticed that some of the affected boats have their headsails attached at a forestay location well back from the bow. We feel like any attachment distance forward from the standard jib/genoa/forestay should be the same as having a sprit of the same distance. I would like to see if there are any PHRF representatives from other regions who have addressed this. Please let us know what has worked for your region. If you have a PHRF rule which also allows symmetrical and asymmetrical spinnakers and rates for the most advantageous downwind sail, please let us know! Thanks! I thought PHRF was tough as a competitor. Now that I am volunteering on on the committee, I realize it is even harder than I thought. We would appreciate any help and advice. If you want to complain about PHRF, there are plenty of other threads for that. My personal way for minimizing PHRF complaints is using class splits based on both PHRF and displacement (http://lcyc.info/racing/divisions), but that is another topic! Many thanks, Jason
  8. I was listening to the John Casey podcast with Mitch "The International Rabbit" Booth and they were talking about the development of the Tornado with the kite and double traps and Casey was talking about modding Prindle 19s with kites and it got me to wondering what was the first beach cat sold stock with a kite? I know about people putting them on Prindles and Hobies and eventually the manufacturers started selling the option but maybe what was the first one to be designed for the kite.
