All That Glitters...

Recommended Posts

The WRAMS model for today is ugly ugly ugly, with a max of 6 knots showing. Not what you come to Lauderdale for, that's for sure, but there is still some weirdness in the atmosphere with a front stalling over the state. Plenty of humidity, some showers and squally bits earlier, and a great party at the LYC last night.

NWS Marine Forecast:

Today... Southeast winds 8 to 13 knots. Seas 2 feet or less. Intracoastal waters a moderate chop. Chance of showers and slight chance of thunderstorms.

On a good note, we have some great folks on the boat today, and a super plan for the rest of the weekend. Not only do we have sponsor Ron McTighe from MII YACHT BROKERS driving the bad-ass intrepid 34 sportfisher, but we've brought back Aaron Siegler, "the kid in the hole" who ran our live production from down below in Annapolis. Awesome dude who will ensure that shit gets up a lot quicker than usual.

Mer is of course shooting, and also aboard is Sarah Proctor with her assistant Amy. More chick is never bad.

Andy Burdick is going to be our guest commentator tomorrow, Federico Michetti on Sunday.

This has turned from almost nothing to an awesome event in three years. Very glad to be here!

From the incomparable Molly Baxter:

It was pretty cool seeing everyone filter into the Bahia Mar hotel bar last night. A reunion of great friends – many new faces have joined the Melges 32 class this event. We have Mark Ivey, Terry Hutchinson, Andy Horton, Chris Larson, Andy Lovell; the list goes on and on. Certainly this fleet is every bit as deep and talented as that which gathered for the Worlds in Porto Cervo. Overall the level of the fleet has definitely gotten way better – fast.

Today was the last practice day before the event and it seemed like every boat was out there. We got out on the water about 10 and were met with big waves and breeze around 15-18 from the South which eventually died down to 10-12 by the end of the day. Everyone lined up upwind and tuned against each other with top coaches like Morgan Reeser offering solid advice. Team Argo felt pretty fast today, although the practice weekend we did with Star two weekends ago definitely helped get the kinks out. We first set up with Ninkasi and then later tuned with Samba Pa Ti and Red. Everyone seemed very even, it was more about boat handling and tactics to make the difference.

Morgan Reeser ran practice starts and races in the afternoon. We did 4 practice starts which devolved into a bow out contest with most of the fleet over at every start. In the practice race Argo had a horrible start, but we tacked out right away and hooked into a sweet puff. We tacked while we could cross some of the boats who tacked later in less breeze and then got hooked up again with a lift on the left side and ended up rounding the weather mark in 4th. The weather mark is where you saw the biggest gains and losses – plenty of boats struggled with getting the kite up clean, some kites were in the water… it was a bit messy. We ended up finishing 2nd in that race, right behind the Italian boat Fantasticaaa. We headed back to the dock around 2 so we could put our good main on and finish prepping the boat.

The highlight of the night was when an anonymous person took a plunge in the water while docking our Protector. We were laughing so hard when he crawled out of the water with a wet cell phone and one flip flop.

When's the first gun and how does this work? Toggle back and forth between the Kattack feed and thread for vids?

Either that or just open the Kattack page in another window, then make that window just big enough for the screen, and then you can just sort of leave it open...

Warning is at 11 AM.

And it's raining.

There's some breeze coming in! Tom Lihan just swung by to say hello in his sick-ass custom fishing boat Masada. More vids on their way, long interview with Kip Meadows owner of Roxanne about the owner's meeting last night etc...

Pretty flukey breeze, plenty shifty and not as strong as it was five knots down here at the committee boat, but still enough to race, and it's stronger up the course. There's also some lump coming from about 150 degrees.

A big thanks to Tom Carruthers and Point Loma Oufitting for their continued support of OTWA, and for great gear that we love to wear. I think Tom might have a pair of Kaenons to give away today...

More vids coming, RC slowly getting things set up, though it still may take a bit to stabilize.

Does the Kattack feed work on an iPhone? If so how do I make it work? A Kattack app? Do not see one in the App Store....

Try the link here Simon, maybe safari can play it on your phone. I'll ask the Kattack guys if they have a suggestion too, they're out here on a RIB.

And a general recall. It's weird - 150 yards up the course there is maybe 8 knots of wind but at the line is almost nothing, just a 3 foot lump to make powering up hard.

Interesting setup, the guys who went to shore got out of the current and then picked up some pressure, and look to be caning the offshore boats.Star had to go back and re-start, the only OCS boat, but I think they did ok tacking right away to get to shore. Delta and Heartbreaker look strong, definiltely less breeze where we are on the left of the fleet. Start vid loading now.

On the computer looks like the boys that stayted offshore are way ahead.

God just once I wish we would take Saturn to one of these events.

Hey CLEANAGE:

There are no watch boxes posted yet but there is some weirdness coming your way from due South. I'll try to monitor it for you. Also winds to the south are increase. DIR = 170-180 degrees.

Is there a way to get boat names for the tracks in the embedded kattack viewer? Need a good distraction from my problem set...

put cursor over boats and name and speed appear. samba last again after penalty turn.

go ramrod and naptown boys including the kiwi residing in Baltimore.

Nope that does not work - the Kattack site says you need Flash Player and Adobe says that Apple "restricts use of technologies required by products like Flash Player."

Just as well I am back in the office - Race 2 results??

That is exactly how it looked on Kattack... Roug. got to the to weather/starboard side and forced Roddy to jibe early / sail to the unfavored end of the line.

Hopefully some good video of that??

No Hitter had to come to an end eventually...

I like the Kattack coverage - fills in the gaps and keeps some of the chit chat at bay.

It is just gorgeous out right now, and thank god they lengthened the course so much. Big pack in the middle in good breeze, but the middle left, where Ramrod has been all day, still lookin' strong. Headed to top mark now. Breeze @12 knots.

What happened to Rougarou right after the gate mark? She seemed to bear away and stop. Kite in the water? Was the right gate (looking downwind) so unfavored that no-one of the top boats went around it? Can we please have more analysis, commentary - which side is paying, which mark is favored, use the Kattack feed to figure out who is going fastest, thus where the wind is, etc.? - as you go

Running Kattack side by side with the vids is perfect.

Alan, you've really pulled it all together. This is the whole package and you deserve huge credit for making this the benchmark all other coverage has to be measured against.

Thank you.
