      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Events in San Francisco Bay in September...

164 posts in this topic

Are there any sailing events scheduled for an Francisco Bay for Mid May? There is an event in the planning stages but they want to make certain that it will be able to be attended by the masses and don't want to draw down another established event. From what I have seen, this will be an event that anyone within a two day drive of the Bay will want to trailer to and those who are true Anarchists may fly in from all over the world for...(Seriously).

EDIT: The organizer did not want to rush things. The event has been moved to the weekend before Big Boat in September, 2010.

Here's the 2009 San Francisco sailing calendar: NorCal Calendar

They've mailed out the one for 2010, but for some reason it isn't on-line yet. Anyway, the dates should be similar.

Why the big secret?

No big secret, just working out details of whether or not it will be feasible and how not to take away from existing events.

There is usually a hole in the schedule in July for people doing transpac, pac cup, and/or coastal cup.

So if you don't mind losing that crowd....

For those of us in the Pacific NW, a group tow boats down for Delta Ditch (6/12/10?). If something could be within a week or 2 either side of that event, it might make it feasible to leave a boat and fly home and kill 2 birds with one tow trip. Just food for thought.

Isn't April normally a quiet month? I know there is a month in the season where there isn't much. Just find out and fill it in there. May seems to not be the month to do it.

Okay, we have canned April and May as there are just too many conflicts and the meteo can be "iffy".

New date is the weekend before Big Boat. I am sure there are conflicts...Name them people!

I think when the details of this event get out, it will be a MUST DO for most of the folks up there in the Bay. From 4KTSBs to Sleds...Probably a trip worth maing from just about anywhere on the west coast. The race should be fun BUT*** It will be a serious party. I am talking legendary...

As photoboy's link shows, there are 802 permitted events under the YRA's aegis for 2010. There simply is no slack time on the SF Bay, they sail every day of the year there. There are very few days of the year that don't include a beer can race, for starters, and the weekends ALWAYS have multiple events.

Good luck, DryArmour!

If you love great parties with really pretty girls, lots of music and alcohol, an epic venue and downhill sailing in 25 knots to 82 F' weather where the people serving the booze are not completely dressed, then this event might be for you.

No Strings...It is not about the race...it's about the race to the PARTY and the PARTY is what will be different from most of your experiences at "Regattas" hosted by Yacht Clubs. Hobie Alter had it right: "It's not about the boats. It's about the people and the party after a day on the water."

The race is just an excuse to sail fast for a few hours and then party like no other sailing event you have ever been to...

We should be able to button up the details between now and Monday. I know they have the preliminary NOR written but they are trying to secure a few sponsors so that the perpetual trophies can be really cool and not some piece of wood with a gold plaque screwed to it...Patience...hard to come by on the Internet where everyone wants to know everything right now.

Sorry man, it is a September event the weekend before Big Boat...

I just spoke to the event organizer and they are working hard to update the web site, create a complete NOR and have a Press Release out on or about Wednesday, January 20th. Don't hold me to that, but that is the target...

Without completely spilling the beans:

It is a down wind point to point race. But it isn't so much a race as it is an end of Summer party, on a private island. No one under 21 allowed. There might be alcohol...and a DJ...and talent...and...Well, you can read all about it Sunday Night when the NOR gets posted. The people putting it on have a reputation for doing things right. Think of it as the Delta version of "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas".

San Francisco to Spinner Island Race debuts September 11, 2010

San Francisco—What happens when 250 of the World's fastest sailboats start downwind at the same time and race to a private island in the Delta? We will soon see as the first annual San Francisco to Spinner Island race gets underway September 11th. The new 40 mile run will feature all Big Boat Series classes, IRC, BAMA, Melges 32's, Moore 24’s and any other class with 5 boats or more. Everything from ULDB Maxis, multihulls to skiffs can enter. The Farm Door Trophy will be presented for first to finish, Il Moro trophy for first monohull, the Sausalito Cup for first on corrected and class trophies for 5 or more boats. Former America’s Cup sailor John Sweeney who ran the Challenge-Series for Americas Cup Boats on San Francisco Bay created the new race to offer everyone a great R-rated party on his private Delta Island. You can do the race in just a few hours and party like rock stars with a great DJ and some amazing bikini clad help. The race is the perfect tune up for Big Boat Series and will be the best party of the summer featuring the Spinner Island girls.

The event will be managed by RegattaPRO. Entry fee is $75, limited to 250 boats so first come first serve. More details at www.regattapro.com. Download the notice of race and entry form from the links below:

• Notice of Race (86kb pdf)

• Entry Form (78kb pdf)

Still not clear why Sweeney and a reputable, local outfit like Regatta Pro needed an out-of-towner to do the preliminary market research on SA.

Kū:

I am crushed...and here I thought we were all part of the SA community. I think it is just a matter of having enough time to get everything done in a short amount of time. Takes people. Can we count on the mighty Kū to assist in marketing? ;)

Kū regrets crushing you. Sometimes He does not know His own might.

FYI, John Sweeney posted the press release on the Spinner Island website, and linked to it on his Facebook page at 9:21PM Wednesday.

Plus there is this thing called Google that you might want to find out about if you are going to do marketing on the Internet.

It does sound like a fun event! Just what Vegas-like services will the bikini-clad Spinner Girls be providing?

Yes, I was immediately intrigued by the event when I first Googled Spinner Island images. Try it, I think you will find the first few results very interesting if you are a male.

Again Kū, can we count on your time and effort assisting in the marketing for this event?

Well, it's a location that pretty much eliminates trailering home for the smaller boats. It's also the weekend right before BBS, which makes it a pain in the ass for the IRC boats that are doing BBS. And it sits on top of the Express 27 Nationals.

Good luck though.

There just does not seem to be a "Good" weekend to run the event so it was strategically placed at a time when the M32s would be in town for Worlds. Some of the folks sailing Big Boat like to party as much as sail so Is suspect those who appreciate the truly finer things in life will come join in the fun.

It is my understanding that there is a ramp relatively close making trailering very easy. I'll make sure though...

It actually works well for us on the 40 and we are doing BBS. Gives us one day for an easy fun race and one day to practice on the Bay the weekend before BBS. C'mon, it's only a 43 mile race so it's not like the return delivery will take days and means two events instead of one for those coming from SoCal.

Big bonus this year that BBS starts a week later menaing that some crew (including our bow chick) will not have the huge conflict with first day of school.

Now we just need somebody to give the boats heading South after BBS a start so we can race home! Finish in Sta. Barbara??

There's a public ramp in the Pittsburg Marina. I used it a couple of years ago and it was fine.

Aa,

I saw something about skiffs, would this be enough to motiviate you to get off your ass and fix yours? Might tie in well w/ packing to go to one mid pacific island the following month! 40 mi. downhill in breeze would be very interesting. Awards for 1st monohulls to finish!

Lotta mud up there, use your charts! Looks like there's pretty deep water available, as long as you stay sharp.

I'd expect nothing less from RegattaPro, of course.

Where are 250 boats going to tie up? River View Park and ferried across to the Island?

The guys that own Spinner Island are willing to build more dock space (They have a bit of cash if you know who they are) and they have room for a LOT of docks...I guess it's nice to "Own an entire island". That and the folks who want to stay in the hotel in Pittsburg will probably want to take their boat over there...
