BACARDI Miami Sailing Week

J24 and Bacardi Miami Sailing Week

SAILING WITH THE STARS by Dave Reed

For nearly 50 years, March on Biscayne Bay meant one thing-the Star Class’s star studded BACARDI CUP. They’ve had the place virtually to themselves, but this winter, with the creation of Bacardi Miami Sailing Week, an invitational one-design regatta run concurrently with the BACARDI CUP, they’ll have a lot more company on the water and in the hospitality suite.

“BACARDI wanted something more, to expand the Cup to a bigger event,” says Gabriele Pedone, of STUDIOMILANO, a Miami-based firm tasked with launching and running the event. “The BACARDI CUP will always be the capstone event, and when we approached a number of classes, the reception was awesome. They were excited to be part of something with such a rich history.”

The March 7 to 13 regatta will have three circles-one reserved exclusively for the Stars. The resurgent Viper 640 class was the first to accept its invitation, classifying the regatta as its North Americans. The Melges 20 class will use it as a stop on their Audi Sailing Series, and the Melges 24 and J/24 classes are in as well.

Pedone says that the City of Miami is rallying behind the event, too; it’s keen to capitalize on the estimated 20,000 sailors that already come to Miami each winter. “It has a lot of influence, so we’ve gotten great deals on hotels and restaurants, and it’s given us big areas to use for free trailer parking and hospitality areas.”

With such assistance, says Pedone, they’ve been able keep entry fees to approximately $100 per person, and to deliver what he says will be a vibrant regatta village conveniently located on Dinner Key, with free parking, VIP lounge, vendors, interactive games, and even a volleyball court. But more importantly, he adds, the sailing will be classic Miami in March-the same conditions that have lured Star sailors back for 47 years-warm sun, warm water, and reliable winds.

Best regatta I've ever done.

Thank you very much! Hope to see you in Miami this year as well!

I'm a touch too fat for Star sailing this year. Hoping I'll be east coast based by next March. It will be awesome though! My Viper bros are super stoked.

Hey, BMSW, this isn't SailNet or Scuttlebutt. If you intent to pimp your event on Sailing Anarchy then I suggest you buy an ad because this place don't pay for itself!

So a sailing forum heavily tilted to the racing side of sailing, is not a proper place to promote a regatta?

Wrong, it is totally the proper place to promote a regatta. However it is the wrong place to look for "free marketing". Have you noticed that Charleston Race Week, The Heinekin Regatta, 2010 Border Run, Barcelona World Race, and Virgin Islands Race Week have ALL bought advertising space on the Front Page? Feed the Piggy and buy an ad, it's common courtesy

Yes, on SA ... go to the Sport Boat Forum pages and we're right there on the top under the SA logo ... it's a BMSW & Viper Class banner.

Supernatural Fishslapper plans on attending, but it looks like it may be a small turnout. Where are the 15 to 20 boats from Miami?

We will get the boats... a new event always needs time to promote itself, but if you talk to the District they are behind it... Thanks for considering BMSW

Art Exhibit at BACARDI Miami Sailing Week

BACARDI Miami Sailing Week is proud to host a new solo exhibition of Cory Silken’s yachting photography, Color of Wind. The exhibit will feature thirty-four of Silken's most recent images. Renowned for his unmistakable, dynamic sepia-tone panoramas, Silken's new images in Color of Wind presented by BACARDI are saturated with the brilliant colors of some of the most breathtaking ports of call; including Grenada, Newport, Palma de Mallorca, Porto Cervo, and St. Barth’s. Stretched five feet wide on “gallerie wrap” canvas, the scope of this exhibition invites the viewer to experience a taste of the high life, including exceptional locations and spectacular sails.
