MR.CLEAN 164 #1 Posted February 6, 2010 A lot of testing today of video stuff, bandwidth etc, a meeting with AC33 CEO Michel Hodara, and lots of bullshitting at the press conference. But the best part was an exclusive little tour of the BMW base we got from Tom Ehman, Tugboat Turner and Tim Smythe, including the closest-up video I've seen yet of the big wing. Doing a little editing now - not much - but it'll be up soon. Also some video from underneath USA-17, including close-up of the "pollution slots" Sorry for delays, it is as expected a total shit show. You'll love this stuff, and make sure to email/Skype/whatever with anything you' dlike to see or people you'd like us to interview. As you can expect we are not going to get to talk to Alinghi guys much til this is over.

MR.CLEAN 164 #7 Posted February 6, 2010 Two words - underwater anarchy. Show us how the foils work and let us hear the 'whistling' at 30 knots. yeah right! They would seriously have me shot. Then again, if the top mark is in international waters and the race is a foregone conclusion on wednesday ya never know. MR.CLEAN 164 #9 Posted February 6, 2010 Dude we had to check in two extra bags as it is - and all four were exactly 52 pounds. But you can rent pretty much anything here. As you can expect we are not going to get to talk to Alinghi guys much til this is over. Nice start to the coverage... Hopefully more to come on the wing, with some detailed video on the inner workings. (Like how do they run the controls for all 9 of the 'flaperons'?) Oh, and if you get the chance to proverbially lift the tarp that's been covering up the back end of USA 17 before Monday you'd be assuaging the curiousity of a lot of SA'rs! ILYA_Fan 4 #16 Posted February 6, 2010 WOW. Outstanding work! I can't believe they let you so close to the wing and were escorted personally by TE. Where else but SA? The access says loads about the respect BOR have for SA. As for requests... I don't suppose they'll let you photograph the engine, but it couldn't hurt to ask right? Some details about the engine - anything at all - would be great. Ditto the wind detection equipment, friction reduction system and JS's HUD gear. Also.... will there be any on-board video from BOR? Larry placed special emphasis on the value of on-board video for future ACs. How about this one!? Those could be the most interesting vids of all for this event. The best for last, my Number One request: please PLEASE capture Ernesto's face as you convey greetings from Sailing Anarchy.

bcopper 120 #23 Posted February 6, 2010 One of the biggest and most noted differences of the two campaigns is the fact that BMWO is much more open than alinghi, in every respect. For example, alinghi's attempt to be open was an "ask the designers" forum, which was a total joke. Watched some guys drinking coffee, which you can do at a Starbucks anywhere. BFD. And you had to subscribe to be a "friends of alinghi" to watch them drink coffee. Guess their looking to increase the "friends" headcount. We now know none of them have spines, but neither does anyone else on the alinghi team. It amazes me how alinghi heads think they can actually defend this jerks actions. ILYA_Fan 4 #28 Posted February 6, 2010 Time to eat a giant shit sandwich Alinghi! Hehe... good laughs alinghi's attempt to be open was an "ask the designers" forum, which was a total joke. Watched some guys drinking coffee, which you can do at a Starbucks anywhere. BFD. And you had to subscribe to be a "friends of alinghi" to watch them drink coffee. Guess their looking to increase the "friends" headcount. I registered as a Friend of Alinghi and was informed by a special email message that I can download their sweet app for my iPhone! Wheeeeee! HOT DIGGITY I can also buy a goddamn gay cowbell from their web shop! I'm picturing a half-dozen or so sorry fucks in Cuckoo Land ringing their fucking cowbells during the start of the race. Cringing as I imagine the scene. HOW GAY IS RINGING A COWBELL in front of your computer? The only thing more gay I can imagine is ringing a cowbell in front of your computer in drag while chugging seed.

Bellwether1 0 #35 Posted February 6, 2010 Sorry about the wind, the foam on the mike got torn off by baggage handling. My favorite AC interview thus far, 9 minutes with Tim Smythe (hilarious) and Tugboat. Great to hear from the guys responsible for construction management. Thanks. Alan, if you want to maximize the value of your access to and interviews of people for the the SA audience, please ask better questions, and refrain from talking over the answers, or injecting yourself into the dialogue (for instance, your familiarity with "Fawlty Towers" is irrelevant). There was a reason that Tom Ehman felt he had to start asking questions of his team (thankfully for us). If you conduct interviews better, you'll be less likely to find yourself with an ad hoc executive producer.

redboat 1 #39 Posted February 6, 2010 Nice of Turner and Smythe to give you some time. How about some questions about wing controls? Everything from range of control, to source of data to determine settings, who actually controls it, communication between trimmer and helm, how quickly can they tack/jibe, pointing/reaching modes, blah blah blah. A thousand things to ask about that wingy thingy. Isn't a member of the SA team a multi specialist? Bring him along. You are afforded access to these people and machines and have additional personnel as assts. Incorporate them. Like I said the other day, you should have brought Solo. HamishMacdonald 17 #49 Posted February 8, 2010 Any danger of getting some crew innerviews? I saw the one with the f'n massive grinder earlier on BMW's channel, but obviously he hasn't had as much involvement as many of the other positions. Guys at the pointy end and pit woukld be especially interesting, becuase it's their jobs that will vary more from what we're used to than anyone elses, with the radical rig setup. Also, do they have any plans to use only a certain amount of wing in breeze on conditions, or do they expect racing to be canned before that stage is reached?
