Friday 12 February Daily

Recommended Posts

With so much info available and less-than-perfect organization from yours truly (what's new?), things have gotten somewhat chaotic around these parts. So from now on until the end of this increasingly silly competition we will be organizing things here in OTW Anarchy via daily threads. That way we can make sure that our videos, schedules, pictures, and information on the ground are easy to access in chronological order. Only the SA team can create new threads in this forum, so the info should stay relatively clean. Feel free to post pertinent info as you like, weather, announcements, whatever are all welcome. Shitfights are not.

Our team will be moving back to a more traditional format starting today. We will continue with Cocktail Hour starting tomorrow evening local time, but we're going to be doing more frequent and numerous interviews so we can get as wide a variety of folks on camera as possible.

Thank you for watching, and for checking out our sponsors' links above.

This is getting ridiculous! I have sailed a few regattas with Harold B. as PRO and we went out in extremely windy condition and broke our provided boat broke into pieces. He didnt care then, why now? Albeit a different level of competition and lower stakes. Put some reef points on that pussy A5. WTF GO SAILING!

WHAT THE FUCK? No signal before 1154? Why the fuck not? So Bennet can drag EB's semi out of himself, walk of shame back to his apartment and have a shower before getting out to the racecourse? Current evidence seems to suggest that we're going to have minimal windows when this jerkoff is going to let us have some fucking racing, so they should be out there at dawn every day until three hours before sunset trying to get the races in.

Alinghi and HB have dragged sailing down far enough. MAN THE FUCK UP. This is horseshit.

From the weather thread:

Update, with the SWS 12Z model run:

SWS

1100: 3.0kts @ 171

1200: 5.1kts @ 182

1300: 7.8kts @ 196

1400: 9.1kts @ 196

1500: 9.6kts @ 194

This model is fairly certain that the race course area is going to have a wind opposite to the synoptic wind, almost like an eddy off the Gulf Stream.

Would be odd to set a course with a windward mark to the south when everywhere around has a northerly, but just might be possible.

Concerns:

1. Wind shear could be severe, making it hard to trim 60 meter main sails.

2. The northerly could overpower the southerly at any time; timed just right, that could turn the return leg into a second windward leg.

3. Waves will probably still be over a meter (last reading at the Valencia Buoy was about 1.6 meters with 23 knots of breeze from the NW.

But, it sure looks to me that a start at about 1300Z (1400 Valencia Time) with a starting line right about at 39d30m north by 0.00e is entirely feasible ...

Sun set is 6:30pm; dark is 7:00pm. Race should take about 2-3 hours. So a start at 2:00pm is totally realistic, even if there would not be 7 hours of light available. On Monday, HB held the boats on the starting line until about 2:00pm, so he has shown that he is willing to start a race that late.

Fingers crossed...

In the interest of being able to afford to keep our full crew together for another few days, we've dropped our RIB reservation for tomorrow and will be watching the whole thing from shore. We're going to find somewhere to stream our own commentary during the day, so expect some seriously chilled out fun and games mixed with piles of interviews and other interesting stuff that you might not expect.

So our boat for tomorrow got jacked by an Alinghi affiliate. Doesn't matter, we have the laser doppler creators to talk about this new technology and give us a demonstration. Plus, we will have much, much more...........

For those on the best coast, is it 3AM wakeup again? or now something later? Can we get a valencia clock on the SA AC page?

This coverage rules. I really feel sorry for John K and others who have great resumes and tragic histories (sitting on the beach as the ladies failed to cover) who DESERVE a chance to show their stuff. Instead we get the Harold and Ernesto show... I prefer Harold and Maude -- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067185/

1. Jimmy is captain araldite. He even insists on driving the tender.

2. LE was just anounced with the crew, I'm not sure if he got on the tneder or not.

LE just jumped on his RIB to go out, lots of activity on the Doggy. Lets go racing!

Edit: She slipped her mooring as I wrote this.

AIS shows race committee and windward mark boats moving out of the Darsena with a vengeance. RC @ 20 knots heading NE and WM @ 30 knots on an identical heading. This might actually happen!

It looks promising this morning. Race committee are looking to make the most of a 'window of opportunity' and are heading to a start point 30nm to the north of Valencia, 8nm off the coast at Burriana, just to the south of Castellon. Alinghi 5 and BMW ORACLE Racing have docked out and are heading to the race area. So, current schedule allows for a midday start unless there is a further delay

I won't jinx things but...

Edit: Windward mark has peeled off and looks to be heading to set a course for a S-SE'ly

Just got to BMW Oracle base for the 10:10 ride to watch the dockout--all the hospitality and media were still here but the trimaran had already left. Apparently Alinghi docked out super quietly and secretly about an hour ago, before even the Race Committee, so BMW Oracle scrambled to get out there too...

Does this mean they'll be racing? Or is it just a PR game? Who knows yet.

MMMMmm

So after all the posturing having BMWOR going out early to intimidate the PRO, Alinghi are already out there to meet the the RC when it went on the water.

The look on the faces of the BMWRO commentators doing the live feed and the speed with which the room cleared when it was announced Alinghi was out was absolutely priceless and sent the BMWRO boys scampering to the shuttles with a hurried announcement introducing the BMWOR crew.

I've got it 40:60 the Wing

But forza A5 :)

Wave height a little over 12 ft and winds of 30 knots in the Gulf de Leon just north of Barcelona. I'm not sure how that translates to the racecourse. I'm thinking that since Alinghi docked out early, they probably know something.

10:20So wind is reported to be at about 170 deg blowing around 10 knots at mark 1 (ww mark) rising to around 12 knots at times. Actual position of the mark is 39°29´8440 N | 0°07´5437 E. WW1 mark then would be off Valencia but about 20 miles offshore bearing at 350 deg from the start. "Hopefully we can get a race off today," said team BMW ORACLE Racing CEO Russell Coutts. "It's quite a complicated weather forecast but hopefully there will be a window in there where we get some breeze. We'd love to get a race going." Brad Butterworth, Alinghi team skipper and tactician “Hopefully there will be good conditions out there. I think it’s lightening off. The big breeze is going away. I think if we go to a good spot we’ll get good conditions and we’ll be able to have a good race that’ll suit both boats.” “It’s a bit frustrating for all of us being postponed, I want to get out there and race and see how fast these boats are. Today looks like a good day.”

11:07From the committee boat.....wind direction and speed at WW mark: 340° 7 knots and at committee boat: 335° 6 knots, so we will be waiting for the forecast southerly which some forecasts have arriving early to mid afternoon. Reports from the wave buoys this morning seem to confirm that swell should not be a problem, at 1.3m early this morning on the buoy 20 miles offshore and 0.8m on the buoy just off the port. And that has been confirmed by images coming in from the start area, cold and clear with a fairly gentle swell. The question may be whether the heating on land will ultimately help or mess up the new breeze.

The wind is easing, as forecast. The Race Committee is setting up to the North, in anticipation of a windshift to the South.

I've just spoken with one of our boats in the start area and they're saying the wind is starting to turn. USA is off the tow and under sail in around five knots of wind.

So maybe they could have gotten the race in during the heavier stuff this morning from the North, but all hopes are on the lighter breeze from the south establishing itself now, for an afternoon race.

Obvious question...lower sea state, lower winds...must favor A5?
