Day 2 - Starting With A Bang

Recommended Posts

Our whole team is finally assembled, we are caught up on videos, and finally I can get to bed. But I'll leave you with something special.

Go to the youtube vid for the full HD version, or just watch this one.

You ain't seen nothin' yet, Rob.

Foggier today, super light at the moment as team OTWA has the complimentary (20$) breakfast and prepares for battle. With Petey and JC here look for lots more interviews and some serious production from our crew.

And DON'T FORGET to order your carbon fibre Dinghy spar today for 15% off the retail price if you use today's CST Keyword of the day: "PERFORMANCE, QUALITY AND RELIABILITY"

WOW

Petey is good, but your new video guy is outstanding.

Much better OTW footage and totally superior editing. That is fantastic stuff. The interviews are better too. Clean you're wrong about the microphone, it wasn't loud enough when JC was holding the mic away from your flappers.

I hope your OTW budget allows you to keep Felipe on board for every big event. At least Petey can help and hopefully learn some new skillz. Your new guy is DA BOMB.

I would buy a CST mast for my MC scow if it was possible, or a moth if not for the fucking weeds that clog our lake.

Looking like we are postponed around a half hour, so that's two hours until a start until further notice.

Thanks ILYA, and you're damned right that Felipe is a great addition to the team, but realize that the HD camera also is a big part of how sweet that work is, combined with a massive amount of time editing.

Petey is shooting and editing here as well, and I'm going to guess that the Thursday night OTWA video is going to blow this one away. Stay tuned.

Clean; what happened to Si Payne in race 4? Results are up finally...

Si came over to us as we were packing up and he was toting his new rig to the boat. "Why is it that you are always just going perfectly - maybe the fastest you ever have with nothing wrong and everything feeling just right - when you break major parts?"

Bummer for Si - he is a monster in these conditions and such a smart sailor, but now he's got a bad throwout to deal with. Remember that the throwout comes in at i think 6 and the second one after 12.

I just woke up after four hours of serious power nap, my first in a long time. Man, I needed that.

what's the wind been like? - videos are hard here at work

You're coming aboard when you get here right Pete?

Wind has been up and down but never more than 10 and down to 3 knots, today was pretty much perpendicular to shoreline for the first time, some shifts but after the first race when a big righty came in and they shortened the race to one, the direction stayed fairly good. Today was a very light race one (after a nice foiling start the fleet was lowriding by the top mark), a solid race 2, and an up and down race 3. Bora, Mark Robinson, and a couple of others caught plastic bags, which are really in abundance out here, and that can fuck up your race but good. I can't remember who said he caught the same bag twice on successive legs. But that might be a dozen bags on foils caught today, some lowriding when the boats are like fish hooks and some on foils.

hard to make sense of coverage--maybe these results help <_< --would be nice to post in it's own thread?

Hey couch;

What do you mean "hard to make sense of coverage?" Seriously, I'm looking to improve this within the constraints we're working under, but for instance in this thread, you have:

links to the live video coverage

Mark rounding orders when we can get them

finish order for each race (hours before race committee)

links to archived clips of each race from today

interviews

What else would you like?

And Pete, dock out is at 1230 unless there is AP.

Hang tight for some more vids coming up in ten, some really cool stuff. Then there's interviews with Bear (10 minute "speed show") explaining what does what and why on a moth, and the PRO David Campbell-James, who not only did the Olympics and a pile of other stuff, but also is the dad of the guy that's been tearing up the Extreme 40s.

And damned cool for a pommie.

Gotta say that it is really nice to meet PROs that 'get it." Having recently had a chance to talk with Harold Bennett and now David, they have landed on a very small list of PROs that understand sailing's need to accommodate what Sailing Anarchy and a few other media outlets are now doing - personalizing the regatta and getting the stuff out to the public. They join Hank Stuart and Luigi on my short list...

Doesn't look good FINS. Top mark I had camera issues and bottom mark visibility sucked. We need to wait until the water clarity improves - every day there are light winds it gets a bit better - and then send Petey in with the big camera. We're going to try.

OTWA,

The coverage, video's, photo's and especially the Moths themselves are all outstanding. Loving that a guy in his mid 50's is leading the event in the classic wizard way. Lunch in my office today with the door closed. Several in my office new to sailing sat in amazement watching the last 2 races as I explained that 1 mile upwind in 5 minutes is not 12 mph its more like 17-18. The idea of people in my office spending 20 minutes watching sailing is like a modern miracle (and they enjoyed it). It was maybe 2 minutes for the america's cup (no sensation of boat speed).

I was thinking A-cat but I am now thinking Moth!!! We need some local events and clinics in the Great Lakes. These boats are wild but in 5 years this could literally replace the laser, if not sooner.

I wonder if a non-development Moth would grow even faster. A one design with weight classes? Something equalized?

Agreed, outstanding and compelling to the masses. Also the crashes make things interesting and uncertain - will they / won't they - it was interesting to me that OC Group stress the Extereme nature (ie crashes) of the Extreme 40 cat events in their presentations.

Clinics definitely required, you really need protected water and a support boat.

The reality of the high speed crashes does mean it needs commitment, thought and caution (ref interview with Brad and fact that Anna T is cautious about getting injured.)

The "entry price" for the class is high and stuff breaks, it's not going to replace the laser anytime soon in terms of mass appeal.

No to weight equalisation - sailing needs a great class for lighter sailors and this is it - best chance of getting mixed fleets and too much top level sailing favours bigger sailors already (by that I mean 90kg / 200lbs and up)
