      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

      Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Has anyone yet developed a good polar table to use in our racing software?

I ginned one up doing some takeoffs from the IRC chart in Stephanes site, but would like to see if anyone has developed a more accurate and comprehensive table.

 

You could start from these ORC Club certificates. Note that beat and run are VMG values. You need to calculte BSP by dividing with cos(TWA).

Minimum, 10 J111 from 6 nations racing in 3 weeks during Spi Ouest France in La Trinite

3 French, 3 English, 1 Netherlands, 1 Italian, 1 Belgium, 1 Sweden

Way cool.

 

Blur seems to be the last one to splash. Below how it looked earlier this week, but everything seems to be on track... A big puzzle that should come together on march 30: Boat from Les Sables d'Olonne, wheel arrived from Carbonautica in Slovakia, sails from North in Nevada and Sri Llanka will be shipped directly to Vannes, NXR instruments ready at Nexus in Stockholm and some final touches to the running rigging today back home in Gothenburg.

 

Then a week for rig rune, calibration and hopefully some practice. Will be a steep learning curve.

 

Another cool thing - we're bringing a "media man" that will shoot video + stills focusing exclusive on the J/111 class. J/boats is providing a RIB for him. So hopefully we'll be able to provide daily wrap-ups and some cool video from the races. Let's just hope for some nice weather.

For local handicap racing we've decided on either a code 0 (55% mid girth) or a code 1 (65% mid girth).

 

Would be great to get some input on what's working, range (TWA/TWS), sweetspots and when you get overpowered?

 

Naturally there's a "rating cost" - but both sails seems to cost the same here (+1%) - code 0 being more versatile, code 1 being bigger.

Anyone know if the boats entered are confirmed for Spi.

 

Andy Hill historically has not been greatly interested in inshore racing, is his boat launched yet ?

J-Dream was racing this weekend in the Solent so unless they are chartering delivery to La Trin looks a bit tight.

OJE I understand will be launched beginning of this week and J-Dream is on her way across to France. She left after racing today and with luck will be there for Wednesday. We are really looking forward to racing against other J/111s.

My guess is that J/Dream, Xcentric Ripper and J Lance are the boats to watch. The first two have the most experience so far + Didier always performing well att Spi Ouest. Most of us is new to the boat and will have a steep learning curve.

Are you having the boat shipped ? Pretty tight schedule to sail it there based in my experience and the corner can be very nasty upwind at this time of year. Best of luck with it all.

Don't mean to pile the pressure on Stefan but he got his boat last year and has sailed Spi many times including winning it 4 times (?) on his 105. Didier is a very good sailor and will have a strong team.

Class rules:

C.3.1 LIMITATIONS ON THE CREW

(a) The crew shall be Group 1 Competitors and up to one non-Group 1 Competitor, and non-Group 1 competitors of 65 years of age or older. In addition, the crew may include one non-Group 1 Competitor who is a full time employee of J Boats, Inc. or a J Boats dealer or is the J/111 class manager.

As predicted; J-dream, J Lance and Xcentric Ripper in front...

 

We managed to lead at the windward mark both in race 1 and 3, but to many fuck-ups.

We'll get the hang of it soon.

Is it possible to have too much white on a hull?

Yes.

 

That was my concern as well (J/111 #4). One reason why I picked the black powder coated stanchions, dark bottom and boot stripe. Helps some, still very white.

what's the OD rule on jibs? I noticed some were getting furled, some were getting dropped and Blur left his up. Is one faster then the other beyond being able to use horizontal battens if you drop it to the deck.

Great videos, thanks! Nice wipe out at 1:25, I saw it start to go and started having flashbacks to a couple unfortunate episodes we've had on Velocity. Nice recovery though!

And finally, after the last race we popped the kite and went back to La Triinité Sur Mer in style. Another +15 knots ride in medium breeze. Laughing all the way until we ended up in the 115 boat J/80 fleet and had to take it down. Later David, our bowman, found a jellyfish in the jib :D

Now the boat is on a trailer to northern Germany, where we'll cruise the last 200 miles from Kappeln to Gothenburg. We're hoping for a southwesterly as we need to practice our downwind skills...

Just going home after races :-) Will get people further back next time. Also It's great to experiment with different trim - but yes, she's sensitive to weight placement.

 

Also, when the wind comes up I think people sail lower to keep the boat flat. Still fast but more controllable. This time we were on the edge just for the camera.

New boat looks great Blur, and thanks for all the updates on Spi Quest, hope we see the same type of class racing in the US this year.

 

I'm curious why you went for the 3di over the standard class carbon/aramid sails. Any significant advantage to the standard class kit? Assume the 3di's are already class approved.

 

Seems like every boat was sporting a different sail choice.

Places 1-2-3-6 had North, other were different French sailmakers and Doyle (the original demo sails from NZL1).

 

We went with 3Di for the J/109 as one of the first boats in Sweden. Then it was a gamble, because we (or North) didn't know anything about the lifecycle and wear & tear on an amateur boat. But after two very active seasons the're still in extremely good shape.

 

Especially for a medium/heavy jib 3Di can't be beat. Holds it's shape throughout the range and is easy to trim. Actually we trim less with 3Di since they don't move - if it's on the spreader mark in 6 knots, it's still there when it increases to 10. Amazing.

 

The light/medium is a new development in 3Di, so we'll see how it works. The winning boat, J Lance 7, also had a light/medium in 3Di.

 

I promised to write a couple of articles on the sails, so stay tuned.

Actually up wind they remind me very much of X35- I guess they are less tender and quicker even relative to waterline up hill , and a better off wind boat I fully expect?

We only owed Jolou (the 122 from the weekend) 9 sec per hour, so say about 20sec over that race. Seemed they were the same if not slightly quicker upwind but slower down, at least until we put the small kite up and they stuck with their big one.

122s have the edge upwind. Last Cowes week the 111s disappeared as soon as they got planing. Offshore they're a good match till waterline length asserts itself.

Not only did they win their class but they also won the Palmetto Cup for the best boat in the most tightly contested class. Three other 111's, including mine, competed in the class along with J/122s & 130s, a couple 1D35s, an X-41 and a Bene 47.7.

My boat was not one to judge by, our results were nothing to write home about in all conditions. Conversely, Ragin' was successful in pretty much all conditions out there. Wicked was also having consistent success every day. My general observations were that in the chop with higher winds the bigger boats (X-41 & J/122s) did well vs the 111's and in the lighter stuff the 111's stood out. We saw this last year at CRW as well. Friday was choppy with 10-15kt winds. Saturday was relatively flat with 6-10 dying as the day wore on. Sunday we had big rollers (~6') early and light winds (4-8kts) which flattened out as the weather moved in. You can look at the results to see how that relates to the success of the different designs.

 

Hopefully next year we'll have enough boats there to have an OD start.

Blur is now back home in Gothenburg after a 220 NM transport from Kappeln in Germany where it were trucked. The first 140 NM was solo sailing, mostly with the big runner and Jean Claude (my NKE autopilot) steering. Wonderful!

J/111 owners and crew,

I have been doing some sailing here on Western LIS on J/111 Andiamo. We have had issues with our roller furler twice where we had to drop out of races, and now 3 times the backstay pump has fallen apart and we can not put any backstay on. Is anyone else experiencing any of these issues??

They even overstood the mark and still managed to catch everone.

What does that tell you?

I'm thinking it's the crew.

 

 

The backstay pump sucks - it needs a Navtec (Mr + Mrs Andiamo know this)

The roller furler upper swivel is fed to the wrong halyard sheave, creating a bad angle for spinning. Add in the jib luff being a tad long initially, and I'm pretty sure the top spinner is toast.

 

It's difficult when the main halyard clutch slips, the backstay looses pressure or blows out, and the jib won't furl or come down ain't it?

 

Motor works fine though.

and sailed by a bunch of hooligans mixed with a couple that know what they are doing. They aren't even the best 111 in the area. What's next for you guys?

Contact the manufacturer on the backstay pump, they have a fix.

 

We've started to just drop our jib on deck, that works 100% of the time.

J/111 owners and crew,

I have been doing some sailing here on Western LIS on J/111 Andiamo. We have had issues with our roller furler twice where we had to drop out of races, and now 3 times the backstay pump has fallen apart and we can not put any backstay on. Is anyone else experiencing any of these issues??

Contact the manufacturer on the backstay pump, they have a fix.

So you buy a brand new J-Boat and the solution to problems is to contact the component suppliers ?

 

If you want you can call your broker who can call J-Boats who can call the builder who calls the component supplier who will fix your shit or you can just call them directly (since their name is on the part) and get it done quickly. It was a warranty job either way.

 

We broke ours on a 30kt Sunday and wanted to race the following weekend so we thought it'd be better to just get it done but other people can do it whatever way makes them feel comfortable.

hello all,

 

 

Has anyone had problems with the jibs going up with a lot of resistance? We've checked sheaves, luff tape size, halyard routing and it still takes two guys at the mast to get it to full hoist. I don't know what else to check or do at this point.

 

 

By the way, I worked with Sailtec to replace the -8 stock ram with the -10. They are great to work with. I always go straight to the part manufacture if they will warranty the part before going to jboats.
