      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

I just signed on a day after the start -- you get put DFL, but not at the starting point.

I'm going non-pro, this is my first-ever time on something like this, user name is 'pogen'. I'll use this one to learn/practice , probably be more serious about the RdR.

Is there a Group set up to monitor other Anarchists or fellow travellers?

I wasnt going to play but now it is on all day on my work computer, and the same when I get home. No pro options on this boat either.

OK I created a group called Anarchy, it doesn't seem there is a way to invite people, you all have to go and join, if you want to of course.

Be warned though, that I am a bitter, rage-filled asshole and liable to flick you with little or no warning. B)

I saw on the VR forum someone was bitching that the simulated polars were nothing like the real thing, does anyone have any insight on this?

I was doing OK until I went to bed one night and when I woke up I had lost 14,000 places! Also fully manual mode. I'm now in the 11,600 range.

The refresh is a pain in the ass- having to log back in every time.

Flash = sucky.

Also, I sometimes push buttons and nothing happens, I sign in and then get bounced back to the signin screen again etc.

Oh well it is free.

Actually, I don't have to sign in again when the 10min clock (you can activate it on the top right corner of the map) resets... and if you have it on, no need to refresh the whole page...

The leaders are skirting the coast but I believe it is safe to assume they are not on manual mode like us cheap bastards,

I just signed up... you guys talked me into it (despite the fact I said I wouldn't do it again after the Vendee a couple years ago...)

Boat name is WildThing and I'm at the back of the bus... I have also joined the group.

It should at least provide some good insight about the conditions the racers are going through.... damn, that's a big hole!

You will never win with out the full pro option, so wrong sail no biggie . There is still that thing down south the TCZ with its huge holes. That always slows the boys up front down.

Then the Sweet spot east of South America. The launch pad for lows that blow for weeks above 30K. The magic carpet ride is calling "Catch me if you can" .Dont give up on this leg quite yet.

Your lucky my wind up dates are at 2AM. With out TWD on the arrows this race it just guess the TWD unless I got a friend around . But thats no help for future game wind direction.

DEckman will give you a hand with the Course to the mark , to what ever.

Just get your Lat. Long. position from your dashboard in the game.

I got some PMs about joining, I can't keep the multiple names straight. I can't add or invite people to the group, you have to 'join' yourself and then I approve your membership.

I'm still trying to figure out what good 'groups' are. You can't seem to see a list of rankings, and you can't plot only the group's boats on the chart. VR seems to be a pretty shoestring affair, ASFAICT.

I did find a couple of things poking around on the VR forum first

The Guide for my friends is available in English

icon_post_target_unread.gifby Le Grand DIC TPN » 23 Oct 2010, 05:39

Dear all,

I'm pleased to let you know that I've finally published the English version of the Virtual Regatta Guide for my Friends.

I want to express my gratitude to Aengus (Ragged), who spent so long to translate and capture screens in an Irish environment. This is the best proof that there's a life for a French-Irish friendship ... even after Thierry Henry's hand! icon_e_biggrin.gif

Please visit http://vrguide.blogspot.com/

I rely now on your help to proof-read it and moreover to now contribute to it ! Please send me a private message for any comment you may have.

Cheers

That dispensed with, can you tell us what your connection with Spartan Racing is? Presumably you are not playing the V5O game from mid-ocean via satphone link. B)

Cheers Marvin,

This takes us back to the Vendee game days... dont know why they changed the layout of screens, ended up being really difficult to find Anarchy Group to register.

Lucky i bought the toys, wind angle auto pilot saving my ass right even though i should be under kite and heading SSW.

Oh well, at least not parked like it sometimes happened.

The Virtual Regatta boys have not changed their stripes at all, why no notification or some kind of info as to what is going on or the expected delay in the problem they are having.

This is the same bloody arrogance we saw in the Vendee.

Ahhhhh..... worked bloody hard to get to this position out west now i am heading away from the wind again....

I think the new layout is easier. They still lack

1. Easy way (list or table) to see your friends ranking/dist to finish

2. A button or option to show only friends green dots

3. As in (1), but for a group

4. As in (2) but for a group

The red dots are just a small sample of the competition, who knows how they are chosen.

It would be cool to also see a ranking of just the boats using the free, 'classic' option, but that would defeat their business model.

I got my kid doing her own boat, now she is ahead of me and criticizing my heading choices. We'll start the RdR next week together, that will be the real test. :P

Who is plotted on the above 'satellite' image? Only boats within a certain distance of the finish? And why to they clump on certain lines of longitude?

What does "Ranking - SO" mean also?

Too bad all these helper sites are mostly in French.

Not what I expected to see!

Gamers riding down close to the edge of cells, more options I guess.

I assume the top of the cluster is the outer limit of the circle centered on Cape Town that includes the top 10,000 racers...

I assume that SO stands for "Sans Option", no options... [edit] from the home page of the website "Site de classement pour les joueurs Sans Options (SO)"

I don't understand the vertical lines either...

That image says a lot about how the game sees boat placement. The arch cutoff looks like a radius centered on Capetown. The farther west a boat is no matter how far south will rank lower than a eastern boat way further north but "closer" to Capetown on the radius even if land is in the way.

See page 23, 3.7in the VRG pdf below

Virtual Regatta Guide v4.pdf

Apparently fast boats ride close to the edge

See page 46, 9.3 in the VRG pdf above

as the song goes 'go west'

I was wondering what the hell everybody was doing following the rhum line....do they expect to tack up wind to cape town? There is a nice chance to punch through the doldrums, but one still has to get west of st. helena high or pray that the low that is going to spin off argentina will provide them with a get out of jail free card.

I think people get sucked in on a trip to Cape town when their rank goes up the further they are. The fast way there NEVER goes east.

So says the idiot who started 4 days late ;):)

Edit: I would join in if it let me register but I'm knocking and it won't let me in :(

You should be able to logon to Media Players with your original profile from the VG, then you simply select which race you want to play...

Yeah tried that but couldn't get password right but got it this morning so am in the game now. Watchout for Albanyguy slicing through the fleet enroute to Cape Town :P

Edit: mmm...seems the login I remembered is for my 2nd boat in the VOR - so watchout for Mirror Worlds 2011 A slicing through the fleet. Wonder if I can change the name?

bloody hell. you're doin alright - for a kiwi

Cheers mate, learnt my lesson in the Vendee, while racing Remmie and Albanyguy down the coast of Africa in good position we watched a group go west and very wide, they missed all the shit, hit Southern Ocean, then came under the entire fleet flying to the finish.

After the Gero race :( , this seems just so much easier in front of a computer!!!

I think I might need to join in. Brings back memories of 2 years ago in the VOR & Vendee.

Oh & Ohf - he's probly doing good coz Remmie's supplied him with the polars. C'mon Kiwi be good & share

Do you know the secret knock?

Welcome back mate - i thought you'd fallen off the edge of the world.

Yeah have been a bit absent on FD recently. Thought the place had died.

Also been a bit busy with a few other things - like, work and, oh yeah, a World Championship regatta in a couple of months.

Not sure if I can really allocate time to this but will give it a whirl.

Oh well, same old story for me. RDR woke up in .8 kts and the game left me for 12 hours with not a single point on the compass where it would make more than 0kts headway. Hmmm...

Velux, shame on me, I started a couple days late, saw a low spinning up for argentina, mad a bee line to it but was too late. Should have turned east earlier.

Oh, and zezo is useless as it has the wrong polars in for the boats....

Same ol, same ol.

Well good on ya mates - fast passage in to the cape. :D

Wild Boys and I are locked in a little battle, 350 miles to go and 30 miles between us...

What will final wind do to get us in???

800's into finish... possibly better... anyone else in close proximity???

Blastoff has got to be one of the top finishing no option boats.

Only 220 miles to go! Would be nice to pick off a few more boats before the finish, come on low 500’s baby! :)
