^^^^ Traditional fisherman on Inle Lake in Myanmar.

A large part of the lake is only a few feet deep. The fisheman, alone on his craft, sculls slowly forward, and drops the "net" to the bottom of the lake to trap the fish and use a spear to catch it.

The way they do it is amazing; they stand on one leg at the front of the boat, they hold the oar with one hand and their other leg wrapped around the shaft of the oar, and scull forward by swinging the oar blade in the water, holding the net cage in the other hand.

Today, mostly done for tourists...

And I thought that throwing the castnet off the polling platform on the back of the boat was an accomplishment.

Maybe something broke.  It does seem off from side to side.

So you can take the shaft out without removing the rudder.

That's how it was on our C&C 29, anyhow.

Torque. That motor is turning over. Look at the bystanders covering their ears.

This actually was quite common in late 1950's single seat racing cars.

The engine is also canted a few degrees off vertical to lower the bodywork

^^ Oh....and if you'll recall Klaatu's ending speech - in a Movie from the late 50's no less - shows not much has changed:

Quote

I am leaving soon, and you will forgive me if I speak bluntly. The universe grows smaller every day, and the threat of aggression by any group, anywhere, can no longer be tolerated. There must be security for all or no one is secure. Now, this does not mean giving up any freedom except the freedom to act irresponsibly. Your ancestors knew this when they made laws to govern themselves and hired policemen to enforce them. We of the other planets have long accepted this principle. We have an organization for the mutual protection of all planets and for the complete elimination of aggression. The test of any such higher authority is, of course, the police force that supports it. For our policemen, we created a race of robots. Their function is to patrol the planets—in space ships like this one—and preserve the peace. In matters of aggression, we have given them absolute power over us; this power can not be revoked. At the first sign of violence, they act automatically against the aggressor. The penalty for provoking their action is too terrible to risk. The result is that we live in peace, without arms or armies, secure in the knowledge that we are free from aggression and war—free to pursue more profitable enterprises. Now, we do not pretend to have achieved perfection, but we do have a system, and it works. I came here to give you these facts. It is no concern of ours how you run your own planet. But if you threaten to extend your violence, this Earth of yours will be reduced to a burned-out cinder. Your choice is simple: Join us and live in peace, or pursue your present course and face obliteration. We shall be waiting for your answer; the decision rests with you.

The 1951 Gort was certainly better than that 2008 CGI monstrosity. However, the 1951 movie was a gem while the remake graphics looked like a video game.

Most current movies look like video games.

And why is it almost always night time in them?

CGI is easier with less detail to render.  Saves money.

Agree.  I have pretty much given up on Hollywood movies (and I no longer fit the 'target demographic').   Fortunately there alternatives; see, for example, the thread on the film 'Maiden'.

You did a very tidy job parking all those cars.

When I worked there the facility  had only 100 or so employees on site so I could put the cars anywhere. Even so, there was so much empty space that some RC pilots would show up at lunch time to fly their toys . We would grab an extension cord and wheel out a lab cart with a sweep gemerator, a signal generator and an RF mixer. Plug it in, turn them on and point an open wave guide at the planes.  We neverr crashed any but did enjoy  watching the planes do some spastic moves.....

He lived, but I believe he was anonymous until a journalist found him some years later to get his story.  Does anyone remember more (or better) than that?

Ahh, Wikipedia is our friend.  It seems that a journalist did find someone who was subsequently arrested, but the Chinese government have conveniently decided to not recognize his existence, probably to avoid creating an icon or martyr of the rebellion.

Saw an article today that said satellite photos show APC's massed on the mainland side of the border (Kowloon) with Hong Kong. Speculation was the Chinese Govt. is about to put an end to the "demonstrations" in HK. That could get ugly.

In 1993 I was living in Montreal while attending university. I was staying in a home that rented out rooms to students, mostly from other countries.  It was truly an international house with people living there from Germany, Japan, Iran, USA, Mainland China, and a few other countries.

The guy from China was a doctor (no names just in case for his safety), and he was in Canada with a group of others from China to study. He was an officer in the People's Army. He told us that every man of military age was required to be in the People's Army. As a doctor, he was given an officers rank.

At one point there was something on the news about Tiananmen Square. The guy from China said there were rumours in the military that "something" happened there, but no one knew exactly what it was. My landlord and I sat down with him and told him about the Massacre.  The doctor sat there with a look of horror on his face.

We had a Nike site on a hill near our house in CT. back in the 50s. Every once in a while an air raid siren would go off and you could see these things swing up above the tree line.  Paranoid times!

The Lockheed EC-121 Warning Star was state of the art when I was a boy. It was common to see them fly overhead from the local Air Force Base as they left to go on patrol, or as they approached for landing.

Buddy Epstein owned multiple catamaran's designed by CSK in Hawaii, all named Polynesian Concept.  I seem to remember reading somewhere that one of his boats won the Transpac one year.  As an aside, James Arness of Gunsmoke fame also owned a CSK designed catamaran named Seasmoke.
