Actually they sprouted from the imagination and drawing board of Charles Dana Gibson and set the ideal of American beauty and fashion for a decade:

Yep, it is a drawing of Evelyn Nesbitt, done by Gibson, and was the model for the whole series of Gibson girls drawings.

Eaten up by the yellow journalist press of the day.

She might have smiled just a little bit when her jealous banker husband shot Stanford White at the Winter Garden.

But then Stanford White was something of the Jeffrey Epstein of his day.  http://www.historynaked.com/evelyn-nesbit-model-muse-witness-victim/

Oddly though this dates to just shy of 3 years before I was born it doesn't feel like it was that long ago, & yet some of the differences in practices are striking, like a (tin) hard hat being a choice. Kind of glad we don't use floats these days (small platform hanging from the ropes with the torch head laying on it), they were handy but godawful heavy & a bitch to set up sometimes.

Edit to add: & of course not a safety harness in sight! or a railing for that matter.

In DC in a meeting with a bunch of folks who were flying home to LA that afternoon.  Needless to say they were distracted.

The greatest human athletic achievement of all time: Alex Honnold free solo'ing El Capitan.... in 4 hours. Most world class climbers may take days to do the same climb. No rope, no harness, no helmet, no mistakes.

My parents lived in same house they bought in 1963 (for $18000) in Palos Verdes.  Dad used to say smoke came up from identical place in August, 1965.

I wonder how many practices he made before  "cutting the cord" so to speak...

PCH and all other south  and north bound streets were solid jammed. I was contemplating staying overnight in the lab but instead drove east through southcentral. There were indeed folks running block to block with torches. Oddly, there was very little other traffic:lol:  I never stopped for a stop sign or signal but proceeded with some caution. The Harbor freeway was empty wwhen I got there. That onramp was one of the few times I banged the redline through 3rd ,90+?. Arriving into my neighbor hood in San Pedro, lots of folks were keeping am eye on who was comimg up the street.

He did around 50 trips on free ride route specifically to train for the free solo climb, although he's probably climbed it hundreds of times.

Avro Shackleton.  Excellent British long-range maritime surveillance machine from 1949 to 1991.  Four RR Griffon engines and 8 contra-rotating propellers.  I believe at least one is still flying.

Reminds me of the time I was under the vanity counter with the P-Trap disconnected to clean it out.

I reached up with the container I had used to catch the water and dumped it in the sink.
