"Johnston was said to be the inspiration in the cult classic “Dr. Strangelove” for the Major T.J. “King” Kong character. It was played by Slim Pickens as the cowboy-hat-waving pilot who rides a nuclear bomb into Armageddon."

Top pic, NICE! I know that Toho's film were always a way bigger deal but always had a soft spot in my heart for Gamara because he's really neat & full of turtle meat!

Bottom pic, amateurs! without even checking pretty sure that's 1st avenue in my own city.

I can still re-live the expletives that I launched toward Marta at mark roundings. . . she had a flexible interpretation of the rules.  I especially liked the shirtless boat boy holding a chart over her head to shield her from the sun in the cockpit.

Anyone who has sailed with her has great stories.  She is a living legend, for better or for worse.  Say what you want but running a big boat program for as many years as she has, she has made a contribution to the sport of some significance.

I actually really liked her, we were dancing together at WIRW at a club in uptown Oak Harbor when she reached out and pulled the drawstring on my scrub pants to drop them to the floor.  Once again, I was without words.  Marta, Marta, Marta.

When I moved back to the PNW from SoCal, Marda gave me my first ride. I spent a bit of time at that mast and bow. One my most memorable moments was at the top of that mast, at night, untangling halyards while rounding the lightship in those classic light air lumpy seas (it seemed like a no problemo idea down on deck, I was pretty much scared as f**k at the top).

The one and only notorious Ooze.  Not Marda's best boat purchase ever.  A friend went down to Florida to inspect it for her and strongly suggest she not close the deal.

But she keeps on going and going, and her new boat, Maverick, is looking quite nice.

Today in fact.

40 years ago exactly.

It rattled our windows here over 300 miles away. I thought they were blasting at the construction site 2 blocks away.

I thought that something close by at NAS Whidbey blew up, but then my 10 YO son ran into our bedroom and said that Mt St. Helens had erupted.  He got that right.
