Went back for a visit last year. Our friend's once lakefront home now has 50 yards of mud between the lake and their dock. Big Bear Puddle is more like it.

P.D. Eastman wrote and illustrated this one. Not as prolific as Seuss. I am deep into level one reading with my youngest and these his books are gems for building confidence.

I remember watching To Catch a Thief at some college screening and being desperately in love with her at film's end.

An amazing era:

There was Kim Novak...

But ultimately, it was Sophia Loren who took first place...

Yes, the Messinian Salinity Crisis is quite the page turner ;)  You may be thinking of the Glomar Explorer, a different ship, that went hunting for a very specific target.  Fun fact: to this day, the phrase “we can neither confirm nor deny...” is known as the Glomar Response.  The Freedom of Information act was young, and rumor leaked out as to what the Explorer was being built for.  A reporter asked through FOI for info as to what was up.  The CIA couldn’t, obviously, just tell the guy that they were building a ship to go steal a Soviet sub, but were required by FOI to say something.  After some pondering, they came up with “we can neither confirm, nor deny, that....”

One of the engineering instructors at Maine Maritime   Academy when I was there as a student had worked on the Explorer after it had been converted to civilian drilling use.  He said it was a weird ship, and was vastly more complicated than a drilling ship needed to be.  I don’t remember if the ships’ original purpose was known then, but he said it was obvious to those working on it that the government had been up to something funky.

Oh, here’s a random pic.  Sorry for the oversight!

Oradour Sur Glane - 10 Juin 1944.  Small village near Limoges, in France.

An SS batalion gathered the whole population in the center of the village and killed everybody. Women and children in the church. Men in different places in the village. Invalid who could not get to the gathering points were shot on the spot.

642 victims. The few survivors are people who played dead with other inhabitant falling dead over them during the shooting.

As a memorial, the whole village was left as is and can be visited. I visited when I was a teenager.

The silence was deafening.
