Commander Flatley (later Admiral Flatley like his dad) and crew, doing take-offs and landings on USS Forrestal in 1963 with a C-130.  No catapult, no hook. And he'd never flown a 4-engined aircraft before.

Outrageous.

But they had to paint a full length centerline for him to land that beast?

Useful sight helper so you don't hit the tower with a wingtip, which would cartwheel you over the wall.  Not good.

He also landed and took off on the angle deck, FWIW.  Look at the video.

Only issue is they had to strike everything else flyable below to do the experiments.  Not logical or possible on a war footing, so they didn't repeat it.

The carrier crew got tired of cleaning up the shit streak that was left on the flight deck every time that C-130 landed or took off!

The Navy never heard of pressure washers?

Or is that "Defaulters" as the British military call them?

They didn't have any - that's a big part of why that racing was so much more entertaining than it is now. Between the Can-Am and Trans-Am that was about the best racing there ever was.

This is how the top team arrived.

Hobs, either you are getting good at finding obscure photos or Goggle is starting to suck. I'm guessing it is a bit of both. Anyone have another way to search for info on these items?

Riding a motorcycle sidesaddle?

WTF?

That was stupid when women did it on horses but is doubly so on a bike.
