      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Sounds like most things are the same, except that you now have a choice regarding which safety regulations you want to comply with - PIYA Cat 1 or ISAF Offshore Cat 2...

Has anyone laid them out side by side for comparison yet? We have looked at both, but not head to head. High level summary would be nice to post here.

Here is a link to the ISAF Cat 2 monohull regulations - they emphasize many different things than the PIYA regulations. I haven't been able to find a comparison between the two and making one would be quite involved:

The Special regs are a bit more detailed in some areas but they are very close in most areas.

PIYA has changed some of the regs to come a bit more in line with the Special regs. The new set will be out in early January.

The two safety standards seem somewhat comparable, but ISAF Cat 2 would seem to be stricter in a number of key areas (many of which make sense)...

Thanks to all for this! Very useful overview. At a glance we look pretty close to ISAF Cat II compliant (old transpac boat) but we'll want to look at this carefully before we sign the form.

Rumor has it that a bunch a J-109s are planning to sign up with the hope of getting their own division! If this happens the event will fill up early so get your registration in if this is something you are thinking about...

Correct on the J-109's. Interrest has been expressed by at least 4 boats. A couple more would create their own playground.

Well a J 109 division would be great but in an event with so few boats..........it would be more a side show than a true one design division IMO!

Raven, a CM 1200 (Fancy Free's replacement) will be entering, just waiting for our PHRF NW certificate. Should have our application in mid January.

 

On the PIYA / ISAF issue, the biggest issue for us would be the masthead VHF antennae, no doubt a good idea from a communications perspective.

It's fantastic to see some new blood, more energy and early excitement for the VI 360 this year. Record number in early registrations! B) Dealine is Feb 14

 

A fair number of crew already signed up on the website looking for rides. Some very competitive boats have used the crew list on the Van Isle 360 Website to augment their crew in past races.

 

 

As others have said - start booking rooms in places like French Creek, Telegraph Cover and Winter Harbour especially, as there are very limited accomodations there.

I talked to one of the crew who sailed on Jaz last time and Jaz is not returning this time, but some of them will be on the Cal 40 California Girl from Portland (assuming they make it in!). I also heard that Tantivy is planing on going this time.

I believe that they are limited to the low 40s for number of boats due to the moorage capabilities of some of the ports.

It will be tough if they have to reject some applications.

Does anyone know how many actual applications they have received back in? They say they have sent out 85 entry forms, but this isn't particularly meaningful as it is returned entries with $$$ that really count...

 

It would also be interesting to find out the ratings spread and possible divisions -- rumor has it that it will be an exceptionally fast fleet this trip around the rock! Anyone got any "inside" information on this?

I have heard from a good source there are 5 multihulls signed up and paid. Also heard there was over 50 monohulls signed up and paid. I guess we should know shortly the truth.

No "inside" information, but I believe two "reasonably fast" boats sailed by some "reasonably successful" sailors from Seattle have been seriously thinking about doing the lap this time. They wouldn't hurt the high level of friendly, fair competition at all. Nope, not at all.

 

We shall see soon.

You do not think there is 50 qualified monohulls possibily signed up that want to do the race? It would not surprise me if it is over 75. The economy is better, the entry fee is down and rumors this could be the last one all lead me to believe numbers will be way up from last time. Last time only had one multihull now possibly 5.

I think the transition in ownership has already taken place and they are signing up sponsors -- still no word yet on the title sponsor. Doesn't sound like Save On Foods is stepping up to the plate this time (which would be too bad)...

At the present time there are 35 paid entries. There has been conversations with 7 other owners that are have indicated they will be sending entries in to the race office.

In the mix of that 35 entries are 5 mutlihulls. I am not sure what type of multi's are entered. Having said that we have opted not to accept the entry from Dogzilla (they don't meet minimum interior volume rules and wouldn't put a head in the boat).

We expect to have a full compliment of boats on the start line this year. The last week of registration always sees a few last minute entries. The final number of accepted entries will be determined as soon as possible after February 14th. Dock space is always the limiting factor.

The new "owner" of the race is fully committed to putting on a good show this year. For those of you that know Janine and Wayne they are very much involved with running the show. Janine is doing all the "heavy lifting" to get things on track and rolling.

At present we don't have a title sponsor. We are talking with a number of companies and hope to have some news soon. Rest assured the race will proceed with or without a title sponsor. We have also committed to run the race in 2013 as well!!!!!!

 

I will try to keep you up to date when we get more news and will post updates closer to the close of registration.

I don't think the economy or any other factor to increase entries will help alleviate a fundamental constraint: DOCK SPACE at the stop overs e.g. Comox, French Creek, Telegraph Cove, Port Hardy, Ucluelet to name a few places with limited space.

A much more difficult question is where would the crew eat and sleep - my reservations for the entire trip were mostly completed by the end of December (hopefully they let me participate again), but by now I imagine things are a little more difficult...

A certain Farr 30 slept all 7 of its crew at Hardwicke , some comfortably, (and some otherwise) :rolleyes: You'd think that a boat like,, what's its name.... lemme think.. Icon for example, would have bunks and a galley :P

 

What if entries over 50ft requesting dock space were limited to 2 (you'd make a lot more room for smaller boats to enter), and any others over 50ft had to use that seldom seen ground tackle !!! :lol:

Yeah - Hardwicke was a little interesting. Rumor has it that some of the crew on the big blue sled bailed from the comfort of bunks to sleep on the floor of the shed in order to escape the snoring!

And I heard from one my crewmates that slept in the shed that there was no escaping the snoring in there!

Jonesy - good on you for stepping up to the plate. Shore support for this race can be hard work. It takes a ton of organizing, is challenging and an amazing trip in itself. The ground crews provide support for each other with many aspects, especially when getting to the more remote stops like Winter Harbour. They have a great camaraderie among themselves.

 

At the end of the two week race, the crews vote for the best Shore Support with an award going to top voted.

 

I"ve done the race with varying degrees of shore support, from having none (went well) to having the best shore support possible. Feel free to email, if you want. : )

They have received more than 40 entries and are now checking moorage space and other logistics to figure out exactly how many more they can accept. In the mean time, it appears that earlier registrants that have been accepted have been notified.

 

Rubato is in, back for the second time and looking forward to it!

Looks like a really good fleet this year. The Cal 40 California Girl from Portland looks like it could be a dark horse in this one with that rating and its track record offshore !!

So any guess on div splits? I'd assume the multi's will be on there own regardless of rating.............and that there will be 3 mono groups........

 

My guess is

Division 1 -69 - 33 ( 10 boats )

Division 2 42- 72 ( 14 boats )

Division 3 75 - 135 ( 14 boats )

I'm going around for the second time on Dominatrix (X-119). It is great to see so many boats in the 68-75 rating. It will be very interesting to see where the division splits are made. It could be a tough go if we end up chasing J-109's around the island.

If it blows, the RC boat will have a tough time setting up at a few of the finish lines, before a number of boats get there first!! B)

 

Lots of repeat teams going, with years of Van Isle experience under their belt. As well as a bunch of excited VI360 newbies who will simply have a fantastic time. It's gonna be a great time for all.

No idea how class splits are going to go down. Multi's will (should?) definitely have their own start. Three divs would be nice, just to keep the ratings closer.

Multi's will be a seperate class but all boats start together in one start unless they change something. Makes life interesting especially if Dragonfly is able to wind up from way behind the line and hit it at speed.

No pouting! ; ) After racing in 4 Van Isles, I'm very happy to be reading & hearing about it from all you lucky dogs. Besides, I will be on a sailboat racing to Bermuda in June, so you won't hear me complaining.

I suspect two Divisions but the question is which Div gets the 109s?

Organizers of the Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race are pleased to announce TELUS as the new title sponsor of the 2011 event. The eighth edition of the race, which is now named the TELUS Van Isle 360, will take place from June 4 - 18. This year's sold out event features 42 boats, ranging between 25 and 65 feet, with professional and amateur sailors competing side-by-side as they race around Vancouver Island in a series of 10 legs. Every boat taking part in the race will sport TELUS Van Isle 360 decals on their bows. Skippers view these bow decals as a badge of honour and many leave them on for bragging rights long after the race is over. Sailors competing in this event must meet stringent safety protocols and have extensive experience before being accepted to participate.

This thread has brought me out of lurking mode.

I was so thoroughly frustrated with the certain posters and editors that I decided to no longer participate, but...

 

I am participating as crew aboard Kiva, the Finngulf 41, on our first VanIsle. I am too stoked to keep silent about the race anymore.

This is definitely a bucket list race for me and most of the rest of our crew.

 

If you need help or info shoreside in the central or north island, I am happy to do what I can, drop me a pm.
