Chicago Area III

That's good news, ChiGuy. I spoke with Burnham today & they seemed pretty blaise about the whole "30' waves eroding the breakwaters, woe, woe" thing. This may be a weekly occurance in Chicago, I dunno. And they've kindly extended the season thru Saturday on account of the weather. So all is well. :)

One of the dangers of the internet -- besides midget clown porn -- is finding new shit to scare yourself with. While looking for Lake Michigan storm info, I stumbled across the tale of Chicago's 1954 seiche event. That seemed to involve T-storms, tho. Not just hard north winds. Don't mind me....

You wanna tell Mrs. Chaos she can't go, have at it. I gotta warn you, she's a black belt.

I propose Superbowl Weekend for this Winter's ski trip: Feb 2. This is purely selfish since I am out of the country until January 24 and Strictly Sail would be going on the 26th/27th. Grinder will dress up as an NFL cheerleader from one of the teams.

Recall... How about February 9th?

Me me me me me me me me me me meme me me me me.

Brendo, our founder, is out of town untill the week before Wild-Card, so it was Super Bowl Sat or the following. We chose the following weekend. I didn't want all of us to be incapacitated for the (Bears?) Super Bowl

Fuck him! Half the fun of the weekend was the football. Now we all have to suffer? Can't we just get some other drunk douche that looks sorta like him. We'll all be so hammered we won't know the difference.

You know... there is no RULE that says we can't do it both days. Anyone else want to go Wildcard Weekend?

Yep. Tucked into Crowleys where it remains until a certified Offspring (Firstborn) is tendered as payment. :o Kidding. Boatyards sure are proud of their work, tho. I think we have a decent shipper lined up. Hours spent trolling the Web for boat transporters suggests Big Dog isn't unique. Couldn't find a Midwestern company that wanted the job; maybe too busy shuffling boats locally? Thanks for keeping an eye peeled, ChiGuy. Reports say the old 10 hp Penta smokes a bit. The fenders were lost overboard during last week's ruckus, which is maybe why you don't clip them to lifelines. Or the PO kept 'em, who knows. :)

Winter Anarchy should not share the space w Salsa dancing but should have enough bartenders. Maybe be in a place that is convenient to public transportation as well.

There's no salsa dancing at Hooters, or Tilted Kilt. There may be some at VIPs depending on who's on stage at that particular time.

Oh yeah, if we are going to have "sponsors" or door prizes let them have their say and feel as if they got their $$'s worth. If they don't have a voice then they should not be there. I, personally, don't need to wake up in the am with miscellaneous chatchkis in my pockets. That's just me, promoting SA, nasty girl, lip balm etc is not what I go for, it to see you jerks. How hard is it to find a back room with a $25 or $35 special where we can all get together and have a laugh

Harder than you think, I think. When we were looking for the Fake Yacht Prom, people are hesitant to rent a room with out a deposit. I didn't have any deposit.

Venues also don't like to rent out rooms when you have a distributor donating 7kegs and a free pour.

Looking for venues in the downtown/close to cta areas currently. Went through suggestions from last year, though, all those places were pretty west. Any new ideas?

Anyone wanting to help or have suggestions, shoot me a message!

Easy for me to get to, but last year the big issue was getting closer to downtown!

I mentioned that It would probably be a good spot. If anyone wants me to talk to owner let me know. I've never attended the shitshow known as Winter Anarchy so don't know who set it up etc.

P.S. Go fuck yourselves. I am a salsa dancer.

IIRC, weather mark couldn't handle our crowd. They had 2 bartenders & waits for drinks was 15 minutes. Go Irish was the point man back then. I think we just wanted a new venue. Bottom lounge epically failed us, too. Next up.....

So I met with Lizzie McNeill's last night and they seem to have everything we've been lacking in years past...

- Downtown location (400 N McClurg) right on the river. A bit off the beaten path in a good way, so we shouldn't get in too much trouble!

- Parking - come in for the show, short walk to/from Navy Pier, Lizzie's will validate parking for $8! Got that? $8 for 24 hour parking.

- CTA - depends on what bus you typically take, 7min walk from the 151

- Space - they're willing to reserve most of the bar for us 75%

- Bar - the bar itself is similar to WM, but it was packed when I arrived, I got a beer in less than 10s

- cover charge - so long as sponsors cooperate, you're going to only pay $10!!! Or at least til the included booze runs dry

- you say you don't like 312 or Mount Gay? We'll have our own drink specials and well drinks start at about $5

How does this all sound???

I'd throw in a vote for this too. Plenty of space fore everyone, guaranteed not to have Salsa dancing. Parking is ultra easy and close to express buses from downtown.

For years, one of the biggest complaints wast that the venues weren't close to downtown or Navy Pier.

It's also nice to get out of the yacht clubs for Anarchy-related activities.

New vid for the Chicago based US One sailing team:

They just arrived in Malaysia and are competing in the WMRT finale starting December 3rd. They're #1 ranked match race team in U.S.

You guys gots to come check out some of the stuff going on up at CMRC this summer...how comes I only see blubbs and 12345 when I'm there? They're not so great to look at after awhile and could use some fresh faces.

Strictly Stupid -or Sail, whatever....We need to do something this year besides the 'piss up' at the pub on Saturday night. Something 'Anarchyish' at the show. Maybe a depraved scavenger hunt?

  • + size soiled panties, 'and not your own Irishdriver...'
  • A picture of you being chase by the cops (bonus if they're on a segway, dbl points if you're on their segway!)
  • Summons, subpoena, bond receipt, (or 'I Bond'), and or other any other court orders from the night before (speeding tix don't count)
  • A Billy Goat chez burger
  • A stolen exhibitors badge
  • Anything from the MORF booth
  • A North Sail sail tie ( it would have to be stolen, we wouldn't believe you if you told us you got it for free)
  • Show up with 'Frankendread' to the Anarchy party (bonus points)
  • A stolen autographed copy of "SailorSpeak" by (Wrong) Bob Roiblat. That’s right, have him sign the fucker, then run!
  • Photo of your time at the Harken “coffee grinder” pedestal, in one of the top 3 times
  • picture of titties at the show is always welcome...
  • An absconded clevis pin from a Beneteau
  • A Bubba Gump menu
  • Bring me the head of 'Skipper', the fucking sailing dolphin!

Please add to the list. Can be finalized after the attorneys have looked it over.

  • 1:24 scale MacGregor 26 (bonus points if in a bottle)

Thank you for attempting to upgrade and drag Area III into the future. Curious as to why do you require all the information beyond my email for the newsletter? I would recco that you change it to no requirement or only name and region.

I don't see why you would require all the info, it stopped me from signing up for the newsletter.

The lake is 307 miles long by 118 miles wide, with 1,640 mile of shoreline. When you step back and take a look, we (the collective "we" of all of the parts of sailing) are not coordinated. The clubs, schools, sailors, shipyards, chandelries, marinas, dealers, brokers, lenders, etc. all operate independently. It sure seems if we all could get on the same page and work together to grow sailboat racing again, there would be a better chance of success. So if we get to know just a little about you, it becomes much easier to bring the various constituents together.

We stuck our neck out by offering the newsletter to all sailors on Lake Michigan, not just those who pay dues (by the way, this has actually turned into a benefit for those who do pay dues which will be described in a later newsletter). By attempting to pull all racing sailors on Lake Michigan together, we can do a better job of communicating and growing.

So when we talk to the marine business in Manitowoc and report that we have 400 sailors in a 75 mile radius, we get their attention. Because they don't have a list of 400 sailors on their own.

The sport needs to integrate and stop working as separate pieces. How do we know? Because the current business model is failing!

Glenn I know plenty about the Great Lakes and businesses/towns around it due to a little project I was a part of, believe me I understand the fractured nature of the marina industry and trying to get the antiquated nature of the industry to come into the future.

So you are looking to get a list to sell to advertisers?

Link to post

We do not sell the list to anyone or provide it to anyone. If a club asks us to run something (regatta notice, etc.) we'll plug a member club's event.

Back when we had a printed yearbook, we sold ads in the book. We would accept ads today for the newsletter or the website. We also have to remain within the confines of not-for-profit tax laws and will be keen to keep our UBI in check which means that advertising would be limited as a result. But to be clear, those ads would only show up in the newsletter or on the website. There would be no direct for-profit single piece marketing to anyone.

And if you remember the book, there weren't that many ads to begin with. Look at the homepage of this website and the sponsored forums. To accomplish that you have to have readership in the tens and hundreds of thousands. Lake Michigan just doesn't have that kind of readership available due to its regional territory. Just trying to be realistic.

I may have been imagining this but I thought I saw someone write on this page or another SA forum page that the Park District was considering waiving the 25% surcharge for non-residents in order to encourage boats back into the harbors. That apparently didn't happen as my invoice included the surcharge.

That only applies to 31st St.

Got it. With Monroe as empty as it was last year, I'm surprised it wasn't included in the deal. Maybe the thought was that they didn't want to incent boaters to chose Monroe over 31st Street (although, it would seem to me that that's unlikely given the signficant cost differential between a can at Monroe and a slip at 31st Street).

Seems pricey. Can't remember what we've paid in the past. We went to Detroit for ours a few years ago. Fun road trip. Nice to be in a different venue. Bayview Yacht Club is certainly a different venue.

Is everyone coming to Winter Anarchy at Lizzy McNiell's?

Yeah and that crazy ass dive bar we found w/ the kareoke hookers was a nice b-day gift...didn't even have a name just a flashing sign that said "BAR"
