Chicago Area III

Does anybody need extra help on the race to Waukegan this Saturday? I'm primarily a tactician on a Morf boat but I am confident as a foredeck, helm, pit, and jib trimmer. My regular boat isn't doing any races this weekend so I want to help out on a boat and get more experience and knowledge in my tool bag. Email me at davidtbrown89@gmail.com if you want me to help out!

Regards,

Dave

I hope someone will take this young man up on his offer to crew.

Waukegan Race party is a blast.

Incidentally, Circus will be vying for a 3-peat of winning the rat-boat PHRF 5 class.

Gonna be some good racing.

I also have a friend in from California who will be racing in my stead on IMEDI. Please welcome him to the Chicago racing scene, won't 'cha?

see everyone up 'der eh?!

When was the last time there were 3 different overnight races taking place at the same time on Lake Michigan. I'd venture to say never. Good luck to everyone, be safe, yo.

What did they do the harbor last night!! Our dock is gone, and they put a star dock back in?? Someone is going to be wearing their ass as a hat tonight if I can't find the boat... WTF!! I just know those Christian rock band dudes from last night had something to do with this. Always pushing their religious beliefs on us, and then messing with our harbors...

I'd love to have my star moved back north!

Looking for some local knowledge from the Chicago crowd:

My 14 year old son is fascinated by trains and the various swing and lift bridges that carry trains over rivers, etc. We're contemplating doing a Chicago "river tour" on our 18ft center console to get a closer look at bridges going over the rivers & channels in the Chicago area. Where should we consider going? Are there any navigational challenges we should be mindful of? Where would be a good place to launch our boat? Any and all local knowledge would be greatly appreciated!

Mac prep this year included getting the seat patch stitching resewn on my foulie pants. Stitching was worn out, Henri Lloyd needed a couple weeks to evaluate and determine if warranty covered or not and told me they were likely beyond useful life, so not likely covered. Emailed Outerwear Repair (they've done great work for me before) in early June and it was going to be no problem to repair and send back by July 8 (gave myself some cushion in case of delivery issues). I delayed sending until just last week and still got my bibs back today! Repair+return shipping only $35! Great customer service, responsive, fast and great repair work. I'll be getting new foulies for next season, but when those start to wear out, Brenda at Outerwear Repair will get my business.

I don't know of a boat ramp on the river... the harbors have them, but you would have to pay the toll at the lock which isn't cheap. However there are still a few boat yards on the south branch that one of may have a ramp, or let you use their crane. Or you could try all the way up north at the harbor near B'hai temple. I think they have a boat ramp inside of the lock up there. Though that would be a long trip to downtown.

As for the river itself, the north branch is pretty, and has a number of smaller bridges. Downtown and loop are nice, but it gets ugly pretty quickly south of Roosevelt Ave.

Also if launching turns into to much of a hassle there is always the architectural boat tour.

there is a "public" (and I beleive free) river launch for ski's, canoes, and powerboats, at Western avenue, just north or south of 55. We canoe out there, and typically turn around (and head back into the city) at or around the western ramp, cuz the water gets, how shall i Put it.....very "thick", the further west one travels. A decent trip for you guys, could be putting in at Western, heading into the city, then heading up the north branch (or out to the lake for that matter) at the merger of North and south branch, aka "Wolf's point." If ya like trains, then you'll get your fill by traversing the south branch.

So little Mac Chatter - okay, I will start it off - what about this forecast?

http://www.lakeeriewx.com/Racing/RTM-2013/Tuesday/RTM_Tuesday.html

The WPC surface forecast for Friday continues to show Lake Michigan under the influence of a large area of high pressure. While the GFS wind forecast for Friday afternoon suggests southerly winds of less than 10 knots, I am concerned that the wind forecast may be too optimistic. Considering the weak pressure gradient over southern Lake Michigan, a forecast for light and variable winds may be more appropriate.

On Saturday, the pressure gradient near Lake Michigan increases in advance of a slow-moving cold front. This increased gradient should promote southerly breezes in the range of 10 to 15 knots from Saturday morning into Saturday afternoon.

Between Saturday and Sunday morning, the cold front is expected to make little forward progress as it advances from central Minnesota to the northwestern shore of Lake Superior. The pressure gradient is forecast to relax during this period resulting in southwesterly winds of 10 knots or less during Saturday night and Sunday.

The cold front will finally make its way down Lake Michigan on Monday. Southwesterly winds of 10 knots or less are expected for most of Monday.

Due to the persistent cold front in the upper Midwest, there is a threat for severe thunderstorms over northern Lake Michigan from Saturday into Monday. At this point, the probability is too low to predict.

Oh, and that forecast reminds me I'm glad to NOT be on a C&C 115 . Boom!

That's not very nice.

Forecast keeps looking better and better. Race to the wind a little ways north and then a roller coaster ride for the rest.

My shore bag never arrived on the Island last week and it has come to my attention that I was not the only one to have this problem. In years past you would hear occasional stories about a bag or maybe two that disappeared, this year I have heard of more than that, perhaps because I was missing my bag and was more in tune with it.

Who else, or heard of someone, did not get their bag this year?

In a moment of frustration I suggested that I was going to file a police report as I considered it a theft the rep from the ferry line was VERY quick to tell me not to do that, that these things work them self out and it would show up. We yesterday I heard of another sailor missing their bag with the same advice from the ferry company.

I am looking to see how many others were missing their bag. Is this a problem this year on the Island, or is it an issue with the ferry or hotel company. Not to keen of finding out what their insurance company thinks the value of my stuff is.

Starting to feel like I may have made a mistake in not going to the police.

Tim, how did your bag get to the ferry & where was it going & who was bringing it?

Was discussing with Blubbery that CYC should look onto a bag delivery service. Drop your bag at CYC on Friday, pay your 30$ or whatever & your bag shows up at a determined location on the island. Hell, maybe I'll run it next year.

It was delivered by a reliable and trusted source in a vehicle owned by one of the B.O’s. I put the bag into the SUV myself Saturday AM on top of the auto pilot and under another bag. Per our Sherpa at the dock it was unloaded, all bags were lined up together (mine was notable as it had wheels), Sherpa asked if she could write down numbers and was told “We never lose things here at ***”, and she went to check in at her hotel in Mac City from there it is hazy but all other boat bags including the auto pilot and gas can went onto the ferry and delivered to the Lilac Tree.

When we arrived we did not have the claim tickets as they were in M.City despite that the L.T. said to go ahead and grab your bag never caring to check the validity of the claim of ownership.

Sorry to hear. FWIW, 5 years ago guy doing deliver back w/us didn't get his bag, he had checked and rechecked at most of the hotels to see if it was mis-delivered. As we were heading out on Wed, he got a call that it had been found. Also, a few years ago, one of the crew on EW lost his bag as we headed home. He brought it to the ferry on Mac island, had it tagged, etc and it never showed up in Mac City. As far as I know, that one is still a mystery.

And I agree, CYC offering island bag service is an interesting idea.

Speaking of things going missing...a couple years ago, someone swiped the Grateful Dead flag from Renegade (originally a Folie flag), the following year the thief or thief's BO returned it. Last week it disappeared again, was taken on Wed between 1 AM - 4 AM. If anyone knows where it is, I can tell you the guys don't get it and really don't care who did it or why, they'd just like the flag back.

On the return trip I once had all our bags end up on the wrong ferry, ended up in st. Ignace. That mixup can't really happen on the ferry to the island, unless there's a second Mac island I don't know about.

Several times I have fed ex'd or ups'd my shore bag up to the island to my hotel. Cost like $30-$40. Well worth it over relying on friendly Sherpas and then marching all over to various Sherpas hotels to figure out where it went.

Good luck locating your bags, that really sucks

The GD flag from Renegade (the Folie a Deux battle flag) is one of a kind - if any one sees it or knows its whereabouts please return, or ask it to be returned either to Renegade or to Columbia Yacht club - Larry and the rest of the Folie alumni would be grateful.

Besides - its bad karma to steal...
