Trickypig 131 #7702 Posted November 20, 2013 Kim, there is another very important stage for SA tragics and that's launching photos and after that, sailing photos. This thread has at least 9 months of life in it , especially if you (we) do Whidbey Island Race Week!! .. just sayin'................ 9 months? This boat is built to last, and since nothing lasts forever, it's also built to be repaired and maintained over time. This thread will probably be interesting to whomever winds up owning this boat after we are all dead. An interesting thought.... it can only add to the resale if one can see all the care and attention that went into her build. But then Sliver has the makings of an heirloom. One of those timeless boats a family can continue to enjoy.

I know what you mean, Bob. I have a jar of marmalade (admittedly fortified with scotch whisky) in the fridge, which has outlasted the previous fridge! Can't remember what it taste like, but no house guest has died from eating it... as far as I know. PS: Kind of suggests it doesn't taste that great...a lot like your Vegemite maybe? Bob Perry 853 #7714 Posted November 20, 2013 My vintage jar of Vegemite tastes exactly like Vegemite. Speaking of good tasty things, take a look at FRANK with a dodger. It seems that Mrs. SWMBO wants one so we have to take care of her.

us7070 286 #7716 Posted November 20, 2013 maybe i asked this before, but did you build a platform for the mast to get that much clearance under the boom?
Bob Perry 853 #7717 Posted November 20, 2013 70: No. But if you are looking at the profile I posted note that it says "Preliminary" and I'm certain that boom height does not reflect the Farr 40 boom height. The BAD with the Farr rig is 4' 11/16". OK, I just checked. The Preliminary drawing has a BAD of 4' 11/16". When I'm good I'm really good. Somehow I'm thinking there must have been some adjustment to the mast step. I don't recall any but that is way too coincidental. I'm really not that good. Maybe Kim can enlighten us. Ok I went back and checked my "working Farr 40 sail plan" for FRANK. The base of the mast is 3" above the top of the cabin sole. So there was an adjustment made to the mast step to accomodate the given bury of the Farr 40 stick. Sailby: When I posted that I have to admit I say here thinking how good it looks. I don't often fall in love with my own work. But lately I have been. It's a good feeling and it comes from having clients that like what I like.

Sure, texting reality shows and being more and more connected are part of life these days but neither of our kids has a facebook or twitter account and they do not suffer the shakes when we get on the boat for three weeks each summer and disconnect. In fact, the 18 year old still wants to come and arranges her work schedule aroudn the vacation. It won't last forever but I'll enjoy it while it lasts. Actually when asked about facebook, the 18 year old said;" I don't need facebook. I have a life." Judging by my kid's ipods, some contemporary music is also very good. Bob Perry 853 #7744 Posted November 22, 2013 PBS was doing a special on contemporary Irish music and they were showing a clip of Van Morrison playing in a small Irish pub. He was singing in his quirky Van way and my son Max walked through the room. Max stopped, looked at the TV for a few seconds then said, "What is this? Open mike?"
Ishmael 6,139 #7745 Posted November 22, 2013 From another hater: Van Morrsion is a fat, curmudgeonly old Irish git – whose success lies squarely at the feet of Irish isolationism and racism. His version of red-eyed soul was the nearest the Republic got to Motown, which is to say that it was significantly distanced by an ocean in between. Adding more Celtic lyrical touches ended up with the boglands version of Joe Cocker wibbling pointlessly about shaking his tush in the moonlight, before losing it all completely on Astral Weeks. http://freakytrigger.co.uk/hate/2001/10/van-morrison-like-a-jelly-roll/ for the rant and rebuttals. I like Van. I have a lot of Van on vinyl, including the aforesaid Astral Weeks.
SloopJonB 8,296 #7746 Posted November 22, 2013 Morrison described the difference between young men & women superbly in Wild Nights - "All the girls walk by, dressed up for each other and the boys do the boogie woogie on the corner of the street". All in all though, I preferred The Committments.

froggie 2 #7759 Posted November 25, 2013 What about some spectra purchase instead of 2 lengths of wire, 4 swages, and a turnbuckle? How about an extended length turnbuckle between the 'base' and the through-deck fitting, since its main purpose is to keep the through-deck fitting a set distance from the base. I really don't see the fitting between the two parts being adjusted a whole lot once everything is in place and set up. Hopefully once it is set it will never need to be adjusted.
