      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

      Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Like so many things in life - the predictions far outstripped the reality. Granted, we were all watching the weather buoys telling us to expect 25-35 on the backside (even a 42 kt gust the eveing before). We also saw Long Beach Harbor master flying twin Gale Warning Flags as we left our slip. But the reality fell far short


For reasons I do not want to recount, we were maybe 15 minutes late to the start. (Assumed the moved the start up at the last minute skippers meeting that we passed on, but we had our issues anyway) We changed to the new carbon #4 by Ullman just prior to the start. Obviously it was no good in the lulls, but great in the prevailing breeze, probably 18-22. We might have seen some 25-28 knots blasts (OK, some say 30) once we got near the island, making land fall about Empire and tacking to the west end. Yes, we debated reefing for a few minutes, but never did. MHK is much better in the heavy upwind that some Tiger detractors might think. Better if we piled seven on the rail; but unkool to ask extra crew to come along and have nothing to do. We were happy with six.


Actually, breeze on the backside disappointed a bit, probably never breaking the 18-22 barrier. Wave angle was dicey on starboard, but beautiful on port and that helped us make the decision to take a few jibes in while all but two boats choose a long starboard jibe. We were probably averaging 12-13, maxed at 18 on a wave. The Tiger was a breeze to keep on track in these conditions. We think we played the jibe angles just right and made up tons of ground, walking the fine line between going in too far, but close enough to get our own shaft of stgrong breeze that other farther outside di not enjoy . Were sensitive to the lee at the east end and played that through well. Probably really pissed off the smack-talkers on Reach Around as we slide under them (they knew we were nowhere to be found at the start) and they suffered the indignity of having to jibe across our stern. Did hit some 0.00 for a brief time about half way across the channel, but the breeze settled back in for about 10 miles of Code weather and then back to the A Plus


No really sure how we did other than to know we beat the Reach Arounders in by half and hour and Misfit by probably an hour. We do know that the J-120 beat us to the finish as we just couldn't quite soak across theier bow and we rated even. No result up but were we pleased with our performanhce at any rate.

Not much debate... the angle was so much better that not jibing was never in the cards. Super fun race and probably not going to get another Catalina race like that for a while.
