      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

my new chainplates came in. I was blown away.

 

I need to go back and check but I was certain I only ordered 3. He made all 6! :o

 

I had it in my mind that the price he quoted me was for 3 and that was good. For 6, that was absurd. He's a friend of mine and I told him no 'friend' discount. He is fairly new to the business (just bought the shop a few months ago) and he confided in me that he underestimated how much time the polishing took. He said it took 5 hours, which sounded a little high for 3 pieces, but now I totally understand.

leaves here in the a.m. on the 2nd, arrives superior in late a.m./early afternoon and goes right in the water. But no rigging. That will be later.

hell yeah! In fact, those holes were plasma cut and they're dead nuts on. So really, I shouldn't feel too bad. My buddy didn't actually 'make' them. He had one of his buddies plasma cut them. Then had one of the shop guys do the polishing. That was the other part I didn't want anything to do with. Polishing brass, bronze, and aluminum is fine. I dig that. SS? fuk that.

 

To quote Jimmy Carter, "I have lusted in my heart" for that little Hobart plasma cutter.

The one with the built-in compressor...

It's (just barely) less than a boat buck.

If anyone get's the opportunity to do something like this on a more 'traditional' vessel, I highly recommend it. It looks KICK ASS. And that's coming from someone who's a hack. Someone with much more patience and skill could make it way more awesome than I did.

 

A buddy came over this week and polished the teak cap rail with Finesse It. Oh MY FG! Will need to get pictures. Unreal. I'm going to have to put bubble wrap all over the boat when I get it in the marina.

 

Started sanding the sole last night. Should be able to get 2 coats on tonight and a third tomorrow. Still need bottom paint and some varnish touchups. Oh, and I need to wire everything up. New panel is sitting at home by now. New hoses for cockpit drains and deck fills. Need to install depth/speed/temp sounder. Can't forget that or the boat will sink. Fuck.

 

I have to have everything out of the boat shed by Sunday eve. I have no idea how they're going to get the boat out of the enclosure. At first they were saying they'd need to strike the enclosure, but then the guy was saying he might be able to move the enclosure.

 

If any of you Twin Citians are looking for something to do, come on by Watergate Marina on Saturday around 6pm.

 

Boat leaves Twin Cities on the 2nd!

I have to have everything out of the boat shed by Sunday eve. I have no idea how they're going to get the boat out of the enclosure. At first they were saying they'd need to strike the enclosure, but then the guy was saying he might be able to move the enclosure.

How Awesome! I looked at your two-weeks-to-go list and shook my head; that's more work than most people do in an entire off season. Amazing.

 

Sorry we missed your party last weekend; sadly our weekend boat schedule is 180 degrees from yours. We'll have to find time to hook up up north. We spent a lot of the past weekend in the west Apostles (Sand & York Islands) and there were lots of boats from Duluth, Superior, and Corny at the anchorages. A manageable distance (45NM) if you start early. Cannot wait to see you guys on the water.

The guys at Watergate asked me to have the shelter cleaned out by tomorrow. I promised I'd have it done by Sunday. After busting ass until 2 a.m. I still wasn't done cleaning up. So I skipped work yesterday. There is still SO much to do on the boat, I'm hyperventrilicating. My goal was to get any 'holes' covered because as soon as they pull it out of the shelter, it will start raining and never stop.

 

So I worked all day thinking I'd get done and just spend a happy 1/2 hour or so cleaning up and go home before midnight.

 

Back in Reality Land, the sun was coming up when I got home. I'm at work now, running on fumes and caffeine.

 

My car is crammed to the gills which means I had to drive the 'other' car.

 

And if I go down the list of stuff that needs to get done, it makes me shudder.

 

On the upside, the boat is ready to leave. I think all my thru-hulls are water tight. They will put her in the water, but there will be no sailing most likely until September. There are quite a few 'holes' still needing filled and I need to finish the electrical. At least being at the dock I'll have power handy (yes, I ALWAYS disconnect shore power when working on the boat).

Have you test run the engine yet?

 

NO WAY!

 

First order of business when Barker's gets it is to pump out old fuel and clean the fuel lines from the deck fill to the engine before ever attempting to start it.

 

Besides, they can't start it. No juice :D

There will be pics. I've been taking tons of pics and have them stored. After this weekend, I won't be doing any boat work during the week, so I'll have time to get them up.

 

We've been experiencing a pretty serious drought here in the midwest.

 

Yesterday, Watergate moved the shelter away from the boat (not vice versa - they actually lifted up that 40' x 15' x 16' shelter onto a trailer and moved it away from the boat). So now my boat is exposed. And guess what the forecast is for the next few days?

 

RAIN!

 

So, you're welcome midwest farmers for me ending your serious drought. I hope your crops do well. dry.gif

Whoo-hoo! Been following along with your adventures as I spent the winter helping out with the overhaul of an Olson 40 - misery (who am I kidding, it's a blast) loves company . What a beauty! Looking forward to checking it out down at Barkers, so if you see someone lurking it might be me, I'll be sure to introduce myself. :)

We're back home now. Internet access was a bit spotty there, so now I have a chance to post some pics.

 

Everyone through the move was just terrific. In fact, I thought the guys at Watergate were going to cry. They got all choked up saying goodbye. Maybe when I get that trawler I'll park it there...

 

The guys from Cross Country Boat Movers really know there shit. This is the third time I've used them and they make this stuff look easy. I was going to follow them up the freeway, but I had 3 teenage girls to wait for.

 

We managed to make it to Barker's just as they were unloading from the trailer.

 

Still quite a bit to do. I did manage to start the engine. To my amazement, the Yanmar started right up. I don't even think it made one full revolution before it fired. Smooth as ever. Obviously I have my batteries installed, but I have a large amount of wiring to sort out. I keep trying to get it done then I realize I have other priorities like getting the mast ready. Would have had the mast installed today except I left the most important clevis pin at home. It's a beefy 5/8" that secures the babstay to the end of the bowsprit. I did manage to install my new Garmin wind transducer. Also sorted out the wiring and standing rigging.

 

I found out where all the water leaks are coming from and 99% of them should be taken care of. Mostly just stuff I hadn't fully secured.

 

Pics or it didn't happen!

nope. Not yet. I had too much crap everywhere for them to get access. When Minna got to the boat, all she could say was, "Gee, I didn't think it was going to be this bad." dry.gif

 

I'm going to send out a list to Joe and see what he thinks. I think we're ok to sail with it for now the way it is. It's not going anywhere. It's hard to explain, but the post is very secure, even with the step pretty much gone.

 

Sitting at work today thinking I don't belong here. B)

The boat looked fantastic sons! In between coming and going from the race I managed to take a run over a get a quick look, but didn't see anyone around. And you're right, you don't belong at work - it's a beautiful day up here, blue sky, a nice west wind, calm seas...perfect day to be on the water (at least thats what the view from my office tells me :lol: ).

And you're right, you don't belong at work - it's a beautiful day up here, blue sky, a nice west wind, calm seas...perfect day to be on the water (at least thats what the view from my office tells me :lol: ).

 

We're going to be there Saturday and hopefully she'll be fully rigged and ready to go. Not sure where we'll be, but should have a slip by then. Probably over on C dock.

Sons, one of our first tool purchases was good Greenlee crimpers with rotary dies. High current and bad crimps are not a place we want to be. It's amazing how many boat owners just throw stuff together with no regard to future repairs or safety.

Oh, it wasn't bare. It was wrapped with about two rolls of electrical tape so we're good...yeesh

 

It's been like that for as long as I've had it, and probably longer. I'm assuming that big black cable was welding cable. The sheath on it was shot. If you bent the cable, the sheath would crack open all the way to the non-tinned copper wire inside. Sorta freaked me out when I saw that.

At Barker's Island Marina, I have access to a damn good crimper

As well as all the battery cable and lugs I could ever want. The place is a gold mine. I made up all new RED cable for the + side. Of course, I won't tell you that all the cables I made were about 10" too short.

I measured the run incorrectly. Don't ask. So I had to get some proper battery posts and use some of the existing red battery cables I already had to 'lengthen' the cables by a couple feet.

Got the stick up, but not without looking like a freakin' chucklehead.

 

First, I had the check stays on wrong fore/aft. So when they put the mast up, the stays wouldn't reach the chainplates. Eric (yeah, the same Eric who won the singlehanded TransPac in an Olson 30), goes up to flip 'em. Finds the nuts holding down the plates are only finger tight. So now all the nuts are suspect. He fixes that screw up then goes up to check the 'non-running back' or whatever it is that sort of counters the staysail. Again, finger tight. More locktight and tightening. Then goes all the way up. Those are tight, but he puts locktight on anyway. I thanked him for saving my life. "Nah, I just saved your mast." "That's what I mean!"

 

Yesterday I looked at the manual for the wind transducer. Why didn't I look at it before putting the mast up? Because I'm a freakin' chucklehead! I forgot to put the in-line terminator between the transducer and the drop cable. :angry:

Those "checkstays" are really upper intermediates and they don't do much. I'd probably try it without them. Less weight, less windage and less chafe on the main. I puit those on all my cutters years ago because the old guys did nit that way. The as I started thinking about it and learning more about what keeps a mast up it ocurred to me that those shrouds are too far forward to do much of anything relative to your forestay. You could convert them into running backs and just have them on hand, in case. I've done this with a number of Valiants.

I will most likely convert to running backs at some point. Most of the more 'serious' Baba guys have already done that.

Got the stick up, but not without looking like a freakin' chucklehead.

 

First, I had the check stays on wrong fore/aft. So when they put the mast up, the stays wouldn't reach the chainplates. Eric (yeah, the same Eric who won the singlehanded TransPac in an Olson 30), goes up to flip 'em. Finds the nuts holding down the plates are only finger tight. So now all the nuts are suspect. He fixes that screw up then goes up to check the 'non-running back' or whatever it is that sort of counters the staysail. Again, finger tight. More locktight and tightening. Then goes all the way up. Those are tight, but he puts locktight on anyway. I thanked him for saving my life. "Nah, I just saved your mast." "That's what I mean!"

 

Yesterday I looked at the manual for the wind transducer. Why didn't I look at it before putting the mast up? Because I'm a freakin' chucklehead! I forgot to put the in-line terminator between the transducer and the drop cable. :angry:

 

dammit!

 

 

Eric is a good dude to have around, and an even better one to have on a boat! Learning from him is an honor...unfortunately I'm at the front and he's typically in the back, so I have to really try and put my listening ears on:) .

 

Saw the boat on Sunday over there on D, but it looked pretty quiet and I'm not one to just run over and knock on the cabintop. Let me know if you ever need an extra set of hands though, happy to help if I can!

ok...

 

for the past two months I kept saying "this is the weekend I get my electrical/electronics done" but something else always got in the way.

 

Well, I am now about 90% done. The other 10% will be my NMEA 2000 network (Thanks tons to WinchinBritches!).

The new sound system KICKS ASS! It makes pretty much every other piece of audio equipment I own sound like shit. Sorry it's a little blurry. I didn't use the flash.

The only disappointment I have is that the remote monitor for the ProMariner charger is pretty weak. I was under the impression this was a real battery monitor. The documentation on the device was pretty sketchy. It's handy in that it tells how much voltage and amps overall, but there's no individual bank monitoring.

 

Just an excuse to snatch myself a BlueSeas monitor. :)

Tell us why you have multiple banks again? I have a house bank and a starting battery, I monitor the house and the start pretty much takes care of itself.

yeah, same here.

 

But more than once many moons ago when I was young(er), we killed batteries - both banks. Or rather, assumed they were killed (it was actually dirty terminals).

 

Back then, we had 1-2-both switch and the thing had been left on both while we swam for hours listening to tunes and running the ice box. Sure, I've eliminated that by getting rid of that stupid switch and keeping the banks isolated but no way I want to relive the horror of womenfolk panic so I want to know what's happening to my batteries ever second we're on the boat.

Exactly. If you ever manage to drain your start, you just combine (thats the only time I ever would) and start with the house. It really the one battery that I never think about.

 

But to answer your question, this unit tracks amps and voltage on the house bank (showing consumption rate and time left), and voltage on the start.

yeah, I have ACR, but it's not hooked up at the moment. The charger I installed (ProNautic 1215 - yeah, 15 amps is wimpy but it's enough for us) can do 3 banks. So I only need the ACR when running the engine for long periods of time which I won't be doing any time soon so that will be waiting for me in spring :)

it's funny. Every time someone sees my Baba (who has seen one before) comments that, "never seen one without a wooden mast". I reply with, "I've seen a dozen or so and I've only seen one with a wooden mast. How many have you seen?"

 

"Including yours, two" :rolleyes:

 

Best bet is to ditch that stick and get them into an aluminum one.

The hot going to the engine is a harness, it includes the factory alternator wiring. I'm not like these folks who spend all their hard earned brain cells on alternator charging. I checked the factory alternator specs/wiring and for my purposes, it works fine. The only thing I need to do is set up my ACR so I can charge both banks from the alt. As it is now, I'm only charging the starting bank. Besides, I'd rather save my brain cells for drinkin'.

 

Interesting about the ABYC recommendation. That's probably to prevent arcing and blowing up all that hydrogen gas that builds up over the batteries. I'm wired directly to the batteries as recommended by the battery charger manufacturer. The charger has always been set up that way. Hasn't blown up yet. Of course, it's been several weeks since I've been there, but I hope the guys at Barker's Island would at least call or send an e-mail if my boat did explode.

I tell ya, this whole refit has been one of the coolest things I've done. I've always been an electrical/electronics geek and the electrical part was the most fun. I didn't even have to use an oscillascope. ;)

It's a great thing to totally understand your wiring. I'm amazed by the number of people we run into far out on the lake that don't have a clue to how their boat really works.

 

Last year, there was much wailing on the dock at our annual rendezvous when someone in a non-C&C couldn't start their engine; one wire had draped itself across his engine, worn through and shorted, and melted a bunch of his wiring harness. He was a little concerned when I ripped out about 20 feet of buggered harness, including five connectors, and replaced it with whatever I could come up with from donations from other boats' stock of spares. Took a couple of hours, but at the end of it not only did his engine start but gauges that had never worked on his boat came to life. I got a bottle of Glenfiddich out of the deal, and he had his engine rewired by a pro who replaced my jury-rig with a neater version of same. A little bit of basic knowledge can be a valuable thing when you're miles away from help.
