      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Contention 33 built in England..1976 3/4 tonner. Pretty fast upwind. Downwind..thank GOD for the huge rudder!

 

Former Patriot of SW Michigan. Became American Blue in Harbor Springs. I bought it in 1989 and changed the name to the first Spar Wars. I think it is in South Haven now.

Very nice ... but how many reefing points do you need?

 

 

Chicago to Mackinac rules at the time were essentially category 2 requirements and provided that you either carried a "storm trisail" with specified area or your mainsail had to be capable of being reduced through reefing by 60% or more of its originaly area. Many Many small boats of the time (and a number of bigger boats) chose three reefs to get there. Two reefs would not do it unless there was a huge gap in area from one to three.

Yes, three reefs was standard, & none of this using a different main for inshore stuff.

 

I did a couple of Hobarts on boats with a fourth reef in the main on the theory that you were more likely to drop in a fourth reef than bother getting the tri-sail up early enough!

 

Great thread for us old blokes and a history lesson for the kids. Don't ever let it die!

Sorry Larry, just want to add some shots of John Thomson in honor of the ALS Walk going on tomorrow. This was shot at Manhasset Bay Fall Series on the Farr 40 Infinity October 27, 2008. I'll dig up some more. Thanks for the idea, Herme.

That boat is freaking gorgeous. Wish I had that kind of scratch to give it a good home. :wub:

 

I've got a lot of history on that boat. I raced on it with the third owner. Affectionately called the "Cedar Speeder". A lot of fun. Pretty boat - ugly crew! ;) It was used as a liveaboard in the Gulf Islands for awhile when one of the owners built a house in the Gulf Islands. It was reno'd by the son/family of the original owner in '80. I see it's got a carbon rig now and the third owner & their crew painted the mast "guard rail yellow" in keeping with the original theme and colour.

Magistri. Sail No. 84007. Peter Farlinger, RCYC, Toronto. C&C 39. 1983 SORC, Miami to Nassau Race. Class E, rated IOR 30.6.

 

Per Mike Hunt, Magistri was a C&C custom 39 owned by Peter Farlinger.

It raced in the 83 Admirals Cup and did quite well. It was sold to a Swedish buyer sometime after the regatta.

I'm pretty sure this Magistri was on the 83 AC team with the 41 Silver Shadow and the C&C 45 Amazing Grace.

 

Jeff Carver said... this Magistri, a custom 39-footer, was designed and built for Peter Farlinger, a former member of the syndicate that had purchased and renamed Marauder.

Our Magistri never earned the reputation in Canada that she deserved -- mainly because Farlinger sailed her exclusively offshore and only for a short period before

selling her to Swedish interests. But she campaigned with distinction, winning the Channel Race as part of the Canadian team at the 1983 Admiral's Cup.

An excellent, if smallish, ocean racer that reaffirmed there was no more to C&C's design touch than a wildcard like Evergreen.

Trim is only part of the problem, halyard needs eased too

Oh wait, that's one of those times where "basic sail trim" includes working the halyard

Really, only the guys on that boat and maybe God know what occurred just before this shot was taken. Given the rolly polly situation that was occurring and the full on halyard I guess that they were recovering from a collapsed blooper that had (and of course would) have put the bloop in the drink maybe 30 seconds earlier. And in many ways, the demise of the blooper was because it wasn't faster, and in fact as has be noted previously, was often slower what with all the dicking around needed.

 

And OMG look at that hole in the water!

Hi Larry,

 

Do you think you could find some nice shoots of Williwaw, the 45 ft alu boat that was disqualified or at least had rating problems in 198x SORC.

 

Another boat I admire is the Aires, some 43-45 ft Ron Holland, she has been shown in the first part of this awesome thread, motoring to start with only main up.

 

I you could dig in the archive about these boats it wold be great smile.gif

It's a great pic, and while some remarks are perhaps a bit underhanded, I give these guys a lot of credit. Sailing a Peterson 42 in those conditions with 5 guys on deck... nowadays you wouldn't see a spinnaker (much less a blooper) on a boat like that without more like 15 crew.

 

And I think TOG is exactly right, they probably yanked the blooper halyard tight about 20 seconds before this pic was taken to lift it out of the previous wave... fun fun fun...

Why would you ever change Intrepids name?

 

Not this shit again. It always said Intrepid on the transom. That was the third in a series of boats the owner has campaigned with the same name for a lot of years. The boat still saiiled during a time when old 12s were rotting yard queens.

All that power and so little speed. It was fun racing to be sure, but pretty much decided with getting to the weather mark in the order of who bought the latest genoa and to the leeward mark in the order of who didn't spin out.

 

The boats and rigs were so wrong in so many ways, including that IOR "chine" midships, just below the waterline.

I'm still stuck in those days with my last two boats. Besides, when have we ever had so many boats racing as back then? Nowadays we are lucky to get 8 or 9 in our class and they are all very different, from a super light 26' to a old Peterson 2 ton. Then we had 20 boats pretty close to each other, great racing, even though it might have been a bit slower and took a lot more work to go slower.

From the time a friend told me he had served as cabin boy on Intrepid's tender

and was often aboard when sailing, I have liked this yacht.

 

I am glad to have taken a number of nice photos of her under sail.

I have no photos of her at a dock anywhere though.

Maybe you do and could share them here, or under sail.

Here in Chicago they tried hard to caller Winddancer, but after awhile they gave up and even put the name Intrepid back on her....

That would be 1981. John Rumsey, Bunky Helfrich , and Carl Craaford were part of the crew. I grew up working at Palmetto Bay Marina that Rumsey and Bunky owned along with my Gary Wheatley. Carl had come over from Aust., to work on WP, I was able to sail on the boat from HHI to Ft Lauderdale... was in 10th grade, my Pop did not want me to miss 4 weeks of school to race...

MORC killed more great small boat designs than IOR did.

It took me and Billy (and McFuck) about 3 days, two hot air guns and a scissors lift to remove those Tasmania stickers Beanhead put on the boat.

Maybe so, but it produced some great designs too. Lots of true dual purpose and well behaved boats came out of MORC.

Not F&P. That’s New Zealand Endeavour after the 93-94 Race. Sold in Miami by Grant to a group of three guys -- 1 in Tasmania and 2 in MDR. Raced in the 1995 Hobart and Mooloolaba and then shipped to MDR where I did some time on her.

I was on there.. Great boat. We had a little min-fleet of them for a while with Tony Johnson's Dorado and an Olson 29 called Bullet.

Saw Bullet break their rig inside Treasure Island at one Michelob Cup, when the race was delayed from Saturday to Sunday, 1991? IIRC. They wanted to 'practice' inside and after setting the spin the rig popped.

Yes, the second boat is definitely Diva. The third boat all the way to leeward is Celebration. You can tell by the Horizon sail number (ending in 25) on the fractional rig. I don't think the JV Diva was a full 2 tonner. All three boats here may be bigger than IOR 30.5 though, you could be right about that.

I believe this was on a Chi-Mac race, perhaps 1982 or so, but am not positive.

I only have scratch sheet from 1983, which does not include her. And my 1983 Mac photos were taken from a helicopter.

It looks like she had yellow lettering, but I can't make it out, and can't remember.
