      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

      Moderation Team Change   06/16/2017

After fifteen years of volunteer moderation at SA, I will no longer be part of the moderation team. The decision to step aside is mine, and has been some time in the works but we did not wish to announce it in advance for a number of reasons. It's been fun, but I need my time back for other purposes now. The Underdawg admin account will not be monitored until further notice, as I will be relinquishing control of it along with my administrative privileges. Zapata will continue on as a moderator, and any concerns or issues can be directed to that account or to the Editor until further notice. Anyone interested in helping moderate the forums should reach out to Scot by sending a PM to the Editor account. Please note that I am not leaving the community, I am merely stepping aside from Admin responsibilities and privileges on the site.

Spike Burgee Signing

195 posts in this topic

I realize that many of you are cleaning up after Irene, but I just wanted to let folks in the Annapolis area know that I have the Spike Burgee and I'd like to circulate it around for signing. We can meet as a group at a mutually agreeable place and time, raise a glass and sign the burgee, or if I have to, I'll drive around and hit as many folks as possible, individually.

Please PM me, and we'll get something set up. Let's keep it moving.

Burgee arrived today kdh, safe and sound, thanks.

It was quite sobering actually to open it and see all the signatures. I got a feeling of being there at the wake, it was a nice feeling.

The best thing is we antipodeans get a whole side to ourselves! The Europeans couldn't afford the postage!!

Bad Tony.

No...and I can't explain it. I wasn't comfortable with it in the house. It's almost like it was too important for me to be trusted with it.

Sorry to bring this up Bob.

Austin:

How's my boy doing?

Still have his balls?

He's looking healthy. A biy bony in the aft quarters though. What is he an IOR bull?

Don't forget the blanket on these chilly nights. Give him a shot of scotch now and then and tell him why.

That's not him. That's a cow. He's doing fine. We actually have kept him and brought the kid in - they didn't have the know-how, facilities or funds to raise a calf. The kid is doing it through FFA, which we sponsor.

He is over 800 pounds now. Still too young for scotch.

Besides, if I bought a bottle of scotch, I'd take a nip and be in trouble with my wife.

I have a problem with being wrong but believing I'm right and getting really annoying when I drink scotch.

Love the stuff. It doesn't love me back.

Austin:

Here's what you do. First off I knew damn well that was a cow. Hell they all look like cows to me unless I can see their junk. I know cows. I've seen a lot of westerns.

Now, when it's quiet at night sneak my bull into the basement. Make a soft place for him, don't forget his blanket, then pull out the bottle of scotch and sit next to him with your arm around his neck and you drink the scotch while talking to my bull.

I can just see it. If your wife cathes you it will so cute she won't have the heart to get mad. Trust me I know as much about women as I know about cows.

I am glad you are keeping him. He's a growing boy.

Bulls like beer.

I had the same issue with Spike's burgee...it spent several days on my kitchen counter as I admired all of the signatures...even after IB came over and signed it which was the first excuse. I felt guilty for keeping it so long and finally signed it and sent it on.

Bob, your son's legacy spreads far and wide, even if some of us never met him personally. I am certain he was a great man.

You just described my neighbor with his shetland pony and a vodka/pink lemonade one evening in his workshop. It was sitting on his lap...Its name is Andele.

Goofiest thing I ever saw.

Ad: a few yaesr back I had a weird spot on my leg. I went to the dermatologist and the nurse showed me into the little room. As she left she picked up a booklet and handed it to me and said, "You should read this." The title of the booklet was SKIN CANCER and YOU. Fuck! So I leafed through it while waiting for the doctor all the time thinking "Fuck!" The doctor walked in, looked at my leg, looked at the booklet and said, "Why are you reading that?" I explained the nurse had given it to me. He said, "You don't have skin cancer. You have psoriasis." But for ten minutes I thought I had skin cancer. That was a long ten minutes.

Glad to hear you are fine.

I hope your implants are not the "hub cap" looking type.

That's Juddy, my pal from the crew of the CONE. He bought ECLIPSE and has been working on it in Seattle. He gets up to the house now and then.

James:

Come on up and bring scotch. I am not afraid anymore of having a wee snort on occasion. I do enjoy the scotch but now I have grown to like the feeling of going to bed stone cold sober at night. I have now lost 27.5 lbs., 12.5 kg. I'm starting to look like Jon Eisenberg. I have another burgee here at the house you can sign if you don't get that one. Two more weeks of crabbing season.

Thought so, the bloke I won Geelong with. Great days, and before the Cone. The Cone came from those days. We were wild, and not just a little bit. A lot.

Awesome to hear of the weight and the snort or two.

Burgee is back in the air tomorrow!

I don't see breast implants. Are you hunching over a bit?

James is every bit the gentleman when he is here. He brings flowers for my wife and a bottle or two. But I get the impression that not long ago he could have been a terror. I'll prod himk into telling me some stiries when he is next here. He seems to always have a lady on hand. He has been renting my son's mother in law apartment behind the house and Max says James seems to do just fine in that department.

OK.. maybe we should go for quality not quantity. I probably won't be back for another 10 weeks or so. Still renovating cottage with my snailpace skills. It was sobering to read all of the signatures, and it felt good to know how many more would be there, before it gets back to Bob and Jill.

After that if I'm following this correctly it needs to go to the "loser". CL, can you please send your details to Floating Dutchman?

That is if there are no volunteers to take it to Hobart!! Which would be kinda nice.

Clearly he has to be the person who presents it back to Bob & Jill when it arrives back up here.

If time could be found for it to make its way to the Middle East before returning, Mrs Leka and I would be proud to sign and sprinkle some desert sand on it.

I could use a good hand on the boat for a race and I'm sure Spike would help our crew work for a sail in Doha Harbor.

Maybe the Anarchists in Dubai would like an opportunity as well.

Not sure if there is a strict timeline on it to return to the PNW, but would be honoured if it came across this way.

That is friggin awesome Ole. It must happen.

Wombat, as Ole said it can come back for additional signings after the race, I mean those Seppos had it for ever!. laugh.gif Note I have descended into using Emoticons to explain my sense of humour!!

Leka, it would be great for you to get an opportunity also. I guess its Uncle Bruce's call. Do we have a time line or is the voyage the thing? Please advise.

I think it would be outstanding if you guys sent it along to Leka after it tours downunder.

I sent Paps his mailing address in an e-mail.

Paps,

With the original circulation list, it was feasible to get it back to Bob and Jill by Christmas but given it's present position, I think the voyage should perhaps be the emphasis.

Thanks for your help in the routing down under.

PS: a Spike Burgee has now done the Marion-Bermuda Race (and back again), been flown during the R Boat match races in the Pacific NW, flown during some local regattas in the PNW and now doing the S2H !!!

TO ALL ADDITIONAL RECIPIENTS OF THE "SPIKE" BURGEE:

As there are more people wanting to add their signatures in memory of Spike, I would like to get a new list organized that can be circulated with the burgee. In the same manner as the first list was organized, it included guidelines on using ball point pens to sign it so that ink wouldn't bleed through the material. In addition, it requested that people email me when they receive it and when they pass it on.

Please can everyone interested in signing it from here on, PM me with their name, address, phone numbers, and email addresses so that I can get a new route list set up. Once I have it, I will email a PDF file to all the additional recipients.

Many thanks.

Tim.

Don't hurry the burgee on our account. Once it gets here it will sit unlooked at for a while anyway. Too many condolences at one time can be a bit of a downer. In time I will put the two of them up in the office, maybe in Spike's bedroom. For now it's good knowing that one is out there, traveling the world, hopefully doing what it says on Jill's license plate frame, "Put a little Spike in your life".

If the timing works out I would really like to fly the burgee when we launch the Sliver vessel.

Hopefully a lot of you will join us for that event.

(Date to be announced, maybe this coming Summer?)

I've spoken with Paradox and organising to hopefully be at the RSYS when they are getting ready to go to the start line. Hopefully have some pics of that if it all pans out.

That is a great idea Paps.

Womby, can you be done with it before boxing day?

I will post something in SA and ORA.

Maybe we an get it a ride in the S2H.

Olaf,

Matt (briartrtpd) wants to sign it and I cannot get to him before Christmas. We are then off sailing until third week January so I'm afraid it will have to wait until we get back. In the meantime, Its been anchored off Balmain for the WLYDO Xmas party ....

Then out for sail on the harbour Sunday .....

(Not easy to get anything other than sky as background)

If we found a S2H ride, I could send it back to you early new year.

Your 'hartness ....

Would be good if you can meet up with Paradox in hobart so with luck we'll have pics from both ends of the course. Then you send back to me so I can catch up with Matt or alternatively maybe you send direct to Matt cos we'll be gone by 1st or 2nd. I'll get Matt's address and send to you or if Matt you read this would you advise OH.
