This is better than Stowe in many ways. YCMTSU!!! And as someone else pointed out, the Anne really was capable of handling the sea, while this thing will fold up into bits of flotsam should it ever find it's way to the high seas......

True... But lest we all forget, many of us didn't think Weed would make it back sans an AMVER... But nobody wants to look at Thor Heyerdal... Kon-Tiki... 4300 miles... 1947... Balsa construction... Same shit that made those rubber band airplanes you used to play with... Let him go and send SA's keel-less posterboy to rescue him... Entertaining for sure....

I can't believe they just glibly partying along while they sit in the mud with everything crashing down around them. That one picture of Rod and Viking really looked like both were just stoned out of there minds.

I can't help but wonder what HR is thinking when he's slogging around in the mudflats.

Does he, to keep himself "sane", fancy himself and the wife/sister/aunt as Humphrey Bogart and Kathryn Hepburn in "The African Queen"?

Thanks to Meuritt's clear photos, we can see more of the rigging quite clearly.

There's so much top-hamper I focused solely on the main mast.

794_standing_rigging_627x879.jpg

Pink: forward shrouds and headstay.

Yellow: inline shrouds (diamond stays).

Green: aft shrouds.

Blue: twin backstays.

Things get a little dicey at the lower terminals of the diamonds (at the lowers.)

With that poor angle on the bobstays, that bowsprit is going to fold the first time the rig pumps.

Still lovin' the cargo boom! It may be the most practical piece of hardware on the entire boat! Wonder if that's how they got the motorcycle on the back porch?

I hate using cliches but, well um er, that's just like a Hunter rig.

The shrouds highlighted in yellow bear a strong resemblance to an old RDF antenna I used to have. Now all he has to do is lay in a supply of butter and he's almost to Lahaina!

Is that a paddle? Looks like a shovel!

Someone posted on CF a while ago claiming to be Hot Rod's daughter and saying a lot of crap in defence of HR. I initially suspected it was someone from here come over to CF for a laugh. When they misinterpreted some remark I made as a personal slight though, and launched in to a long somewhat illiterate spiel about how their great great whatever fought in the Civil War, I became increasingly sure that it was genuine Hot Rod spawn. This may be the mystery lady...

Unfortunately the thread was moderated in to oblivion (duh, it's CF) so I can't tell you the exact details. Suffice to say, she has the typical HR attributes of total unawareness of the impending fuck-up, low intelligence, and enough arrogance to make your eyes hurt.

Have to say, though, to paraphrase Captain Ron: 'Hot Rod appears more cunning than I initially suspected'...

"Who's the baldy on the swim steps?"

You haven't been paying attention. That's the Rod man hisself.

The guy standing up in the dinghy is his son Michael, aka The Viking, and the person sitting in the back of the dinghy is "new guy," their friend who came out briefly Friday afternoon to try to help with the engine in the Bayliner.

Almost looks like a photo that belongs in the "REDNECK YACHT CLUB" thread.... although that threads (Redneck Yacht Club) content level is sinking faster then the F.H.

Thanks to all for great picts and story.... Some things have to be seen to be believed... although I have seen... and still find it hard to believe... I am to be up in the area next week, so... I need to get my own picts....

I have to say, this photo is going to live far, far longer than HR's Cat. You know those ubiquitous HANG IN THERE BABY photos in high school of a cat dangling from a curtain rod, in its one million permutations? This photo is big. It might even be THAT big. I am going to start with, Meth: It could happen to you.

Spoffo or Meuritt... could you take a close up of the lower attachment of the diagonal pole in the rigging? Is it a gooseneck fitting? I'm wondering if the pole is a whisker pole which simnply hasn't been trimmed to proper length yet.

Here's about the best picture I have of it

Saturday - (almost) Nothing to report

I stopped by twice today. Around 8:45 this morning, a bit after low tide, it was totally quiet. FH was in the same position - on the mud but slightly awash. In this position, the bow is definitely higher than the stern, but it's level side to side, so it doesn't seem to have much in the way of torsional loading across the two hulls. (Which I;m guessing will eventually be the deal-breaker.) No signs of life from the folks on board.

Second visit around 12:30 (about 2.5 hours before high tide) water was up to FH's normal sailing lines, but she may have been lightly touching, since there was no motion at all. She still has those two anchors out, so she shows very little motion even in a breeze when definitely afloat. Again no signs of life, athough the sliding side doors (the ones by the stairs to the upper deck) were partly open, presumably for ventilation. I was about to give up when . . . .

I picked up the sounds of a vocal fight inside the cabin. Couldn't make out any words, but the sound of HR in full pissed-off mode is unmistakable.

When it quieted down, HR came out on the back deck, walked back and forth without doing anything, went back inside, came back out and walked some more. That's it. Nothing else happened and I left. (It was all over so fast I didn't get any pix.) It could have been about something trivial, or it could have been the beginning of the end -- mutiny - - a member of the (previously) loyal crew challenging their cap'n with a dose of reality about their situation.

Only time will tell. I won't be able to get over there again until around noon on sunday.

PS: While this was going on, the San Rafael police boat came motoring out of the canal. People on the path perked up in anticipation of finally seeing an intervention, But the cops never looked our way and just kept heading out into the bay where the real boats are.

Not a fair analogy at all.

If HR had just lashed a huge pile of HomeDespot building materials together and announced an intent to see if it would float him to the Islands and Points Beyond, we'd all think he was nuts and forget him in 2 days. The thing would float and probably outlast him.

I lost all my chips when it actually didn't break apart upon being lifted into the water back at the marina... Just waiting to see the inevitable now. Spoffo, thanks for the relentless updates!

New Mamma reminds me of an incident I had 'way back in Puerto Rico days...

Was taking a full fuel barge from Catano to Fajardo (across the wideset part of the bay) and suddenly got overtaken and passed by this 20' (something... DAMIFIKNO) with the "captain" up on the 'flying' bridge studiously igmoring any COLREGS at all, and his (whatever... We all decided it was Moby Dick's sister)... ahhh... 'lady) stark naked, draped out in the stern (I really don't wanna think about this...) in the "starfish" pose.

Either she just was clueless or zoned out on something fun, but as they went past us (and we lost lunches) she became extremely wroth that we had the temerity to look upon her in her state of deshabille and refused to avert our eyes from her 'charms". (Sort of the reason we all keep reading this thread... Some disasters are just too ugly NOT to look at...)

The sight of her "Female Flotation Equipment" gyrating as she hopped up and down in rage (and the resultant porpoising of the boat, almost to the point of shipping water over the transom), well...

It was most disappointing. I criss-crossed San Juan Bay over and over over five years of duty there and that was the ONLY nude, semi-nude or remotely nude female boater we encuntered in all that time.

(I feel like I've just visited my psychiatrist!)

Well say what you want about Hot Rod and the Bayverly Hillbillies, we've all derived a great deal of entertainment at Thier expense and Rod has done something almost none of us can claim- he built a sailboat (and an extremely large one at that) and actually launched it. While the endeavor seems doomed to failure ultimately, I think the man deserves a few props at least.

Deserves? Needs... by my count at least two props (three counting F.H. jr) and two engines.....

and... to be honest... it is kind of like the pyramids.. a complete mystery as to how it is still floating...

After all this I feel a hell of a lot safer on my boat.... or even ANY production boat out there.....

for if F.H. didn't sink (when I could have sworn it would have fallen apart on attempt at launch) then... production boats MUST BE BETTER.....

If the "cutie" is HR's mom and she's wheelchair bound, how come she's not in her chair?

Oh, I just figured it out.

That's just a title to fool the gubmint so's she can collect disability, thereby adding to the kitty for cruising to Hawaii.

Nevermind...

Naw, much simpler. They need a handicap parking permit for the barge, for when they get to Hawaii.

A FELLER BETTER NOT START TO HIGH-WWHY-EE WITHOUT NO LIVE POSSUMS. WHAT IN THE HELL WOULD A MAN EAT OUT THERE IN THE OCEAN WITHOUT NONE, CRAWDADS AND SEA SNAKES? THAT YOUR DAUGHTER ON THAT 'AIR BOAT? NOW SHE IS HEALTHY. AND BROWNER THAN A HOG! I CAN TELL SHE BEEN LIVING RIGHT! GOVERNMENT CHEESE I RECKON.

HR, This is just a joke. I don’t really think you are from Pigsnort, GA, HR. Also, the whole cousindaughter thing, you know, it’s just the way Yankees act the fool. I’m just trying to fit in here with’em. Let me know if you need a possum or two. Say, do you remember the Great Squirrel Famine of 1983? If you made it through that, you can make it to High Why EE. Well, keep the shiny side up.
