      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

      Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

the departure pics of Anne shows that the level of maintenance given by the welcome home hovians was less than anticipated. They couldnt even finish scraping the paint off the sides. Probably because they have never scraped paint in their lives and dont like WORK. (Surprise surprise). So they borrow the credit cards from their parents with inherited wealth, and stock up on paint and scrapers, and head off to a third world boatyard where the labour is affordable/ So while the guyanese sweat and toil using scrapers sandpaper instead of power tools, and fill the Anne up with cheap but satisfactory carvings that can make it worthy to charge an admission fee. the hovian faithful will swan off on tantric yoga trips, and try and find stories worthy of a second book idea. So predictable. If you cant find hovian slaves at home, go overseas and buy some. Suenya is the Judas goat in this story, and slavery is alive and well in Hoviana.

Sorry, Pipper, not a troll, but you must remember your own words "thanks ac! i can really envision the collision* now!" after I posted a detailed drawing of the event that happened on May5/6 2008. Anyway, I see that your focus is on my namesake, America's Cup 2013 . I don't recall saying that I was making a documentary on this event, but if you say so, I am flattered! ;) However, the first day I posted to the 1000-day thread on SA was May 5, 2010, and I was focusing at that time on the Press Conference in Rome, to be held the next morning, announcing the would-be host of the next "America's Cup." I did watch the press conference, if that is what you mean. I had to get up early for that one (as they were on UTC +2, i.e. 6 hours ahead of New York). I would love to do a documentary on the real AC, but that's not my specialty. I do some amateur acting on the side, but never directed anything in theatre or film.

 

The documentary on the America's Cup already happened back in 2007.

Not a Jovian nor a hovian pipper. It did occur to me as you welcomed me back so joyously, that the devotion of this group to badmouthing Stowe so publicly for years, stalking every article appearing anywhere and any supporter to the point of character assassination being a step below what in actuality did happen- that it did have a cumulative impact. In part it had the effect of helping to dry up his sources of help, and in essence eventually forced this ill-prepared journey to South America in search of a place to put his ship where he might be able afford the very needed serious repairs after three long years at sea, for which he prepared well and at extreme length.

 

That is just so much bull shit, RW. He is a comedic target because he invented his own caricature. He had his 5 minutes, but feels he's entitled to more - just like he feels entitled to everything else in life. You, RW, coming here and criticizing people for not stepping up and lending a hand to your favorite narcissist are an enabler. The people here and the world as a whole don't owe Reid Stowe a thing - not a dime, not a hand, and not fame. His boat is in disrepair because he allowed it to fall into disrepair.

 

His sources of help might have left him because he pulled a bait and switch. He was proclaiming a great scientific expedition to study the ozone hole and then posts on his page asking if anyone knows where it is. He's going to study the impact of global warming on the oceans of the world with daily measurments and the only thermometer he apparently has on board is built into a JC Penny wall clock. After he bilked people out of their money for this journey of exploration and science, he changes the entire focus from a "Mars analogous journey" to the "love voyage". You think his supporters might have been just a tad disappointed to see how the dollars they invested in this project to benefit all of mankind were spent?

 

"Voyage to the Mystic Jungles of Guyana", my ass. He found a bunch of naive kids with credit cards and strong backs to help him deliver a 2kt shit-box to a third-world boatyard.

He is back here again, trying to ingratiate himself while 1000 days thread mk 2 cranks up. Despite his claims to not be a hovian, he is the hovian epicentre, with edit rights to the 1000 days site. (and pretty cranky because he never got paid for it all). His style is to play nice for several posts, turn cranky, storm off, and sneak back as a sock puppet agreeing with his former identity. Pretty sad really.

Secondly, I joined this thread [EDIT: this Forum] way before you, so how do you know what my contributions were? He couldn't figure out what was coming if you stuck him in a locked cage match wrapped in Israeli flags and blown up photos of bibi netanyahu, with Bullshit Gaytor and AkaGeorgeGoebbels as the tag team opponents.

There MUST be a medical term for someone who creates a sockpuppet just so that he can praise himself like Americas Cup (Rand Weeks) praises Regatta Wolf (Rand Weeks).... OMG no wonder you were left standing on the wharf Rand.

Lots of days of rain squalls and rough rolly weather.

 

Onward schooner with no steering wheel! My first thoughts were “ how can we go on. The mission is over.” If the rudder had broken down on the 1000 day voyage I never could have completed it. Isn’t it amazing that the rudder made it through that voyage? How can we keep going on? After sailing at sea for longer than any boat in history, doing it on a survival budget and going forward with no budget, how is it possible? It may be impossible for anyone to imagine who is not here on the actual boat that is doing it.

This is the marathon beyond all marathons. Adventurers must first sail beyond 1,152 days to understand how it is to reach mystic levels of the marathon experience.

 

I am not alone now and we all have keep trying together, to go beyond fear, and seasickness into the realm of “keep going, keep trying, keep believing” because this is life and we can live it with joy, gratitude, and love inspiring our fellow man.

We’ve broken half of our coffee mugs, a pot lid shattered, the carpentry in some bunks have been taken apart due to leaks, cabinet doors, windows cracked, pulleys came apart, foresail sheet broke, cockpit seat, motor room hatch, cockpit table, stateroom table, two bathroom doors, intermediate bobstay, turnbuckles so new they unwind themselves, a new lifeline, jib tore, tool box lid broke, bilge pump, the storage bunk came apart and its contents became missiles and the list goes on.

And as if enough things haven’t broken down, the next fatality was the one and only toilet onboard. The head was always a bit sketchy since it was already old before we left and has broken down a few times in various ways. Like when it overflowed during a gale when everyone was seasick and had to be pumped many times before using it, not falling into it in the process as the boat violently bounced in the waves and holding on to our cookies all at the same time. Reid had always been able to make creative fixes and keep it going, but this time was different. Andy helped to take it apart, clean it, and put it back together. It seemed okay at first. The next morning however, it refused to work again. This meant that everyone had to go outside to the stern affectionately called the “poop deck.” The poop deck was always optional, for the fun of the crew. Now in near gale force winds, water splashing over the rolling deck, overcast, and sometimes rainy conditions, the crew goes out in foul weather gear to sit on the oceanic bidet and hold on tight. In a week or so we hope to be in warmer sunnier weather and our deep blue head will once again be a dry airy and scenic experience. Maybe.

Lots of days of rain squalls and rough rolly weather.

 

Onward schooner with no steering wheel! My first thoughts were " how can we go on. The mission is over."

Bullshit. You adjusted the quadrant on the 1000 days trip when you lost your bowsprit, so you know the routine to put it back on. When you inspected the quadrant, you knew it had simply worked its way off, but you concealed it from the crew, and exaggerated it by saying it was broken.

 

If the rudder had broken down on the 1000 day voyage I never could have completed it.

Bullshit, you drifted in circles.

Isn't it amazing that the rudder made it through that voyage? Nope. It was over engineered.

How can we keep going on? Good question. Insanity is a help.

After sailing at sea for longer than any boat in history, doing it on a survival budget and going forward with no budget, how is it possible?

Well that comment has really pleased your sponsors no end. Credit cards and a bit of recruiting and You are going to suddenly become a prolific and expert carver in exotic woods. Thats how.

 

It may be impossible for anyone to imagine who is not here on the actual boat that is doing it.

Arent you tired of the same old cycle: INGRATIATE/ABUSE/SPIT THE DUMMY/USE OTHER SOCK PUPPET TO PRAISE YOURSELF/THINK ABOUT MAKING ANOTHER SOCK PUPPET/EDIT THE HOVIAN TRIPE TO SUGAR COAT IT/POST IT HERE FOR COMMENT (REPEAT CYCLE).

 

First of all, as you must have guessed by now, I am NOT Rand's sockpuppet. My interests here are completely different. Secondly, in defence of Rand (aka RW) he posted this report (without your bold edits, which are obviously tampering with the evidence) after it was already posted at the "1000 days" site. I saw it there myself before I saw it here. There goes your theory of him being back in the hovian chair.

 

Anyway, my real reason for posting this reply is that I want to say, you -- Timmys_Trick_Turkey -- should consider taking over the job of Mission Control Director. Maybe they would have a chance then, beyond "zero point sero." B)

Deliver a boat in extemely poor repair to South America in the winter using volunteer "crew" and scrounged second or third hand equipment and sails is not a mission any sane or responsible seaman would want anything to do with. Any sane person would want to get these people off that boat before something worse happens.

Desperate runs south in early winter hoping to beat the North Atlantic storms in rotten POS boats one step ahead of bill collectors actually isn't all that unusual in sailing literature.

That boat appears to have only one mast, hence, the mainsail, dingo! :unsure:

 

EDIT: FYI, "Sloop: a Bermuda or gaff mainsail lifted by a single mast with a single jib bent onto the forestay, held taut with a backstay. The mainsail is usually managed with a spar on the underside called a "boom". One of the best-performing rigs per square foot of sail area and is fast for up-wind passages. " B)

I feel deeply sorry for those poor kids who swallowed Stowes "Svengali" bullshit, hook, line and sinker. Stowe himself is pretty despicable for doing it. And for risking the life of his young son.

Onward schooner with no steering wheel! My first thoughts were " how can we go on. The mission is over." If the rudder had broken down on the 1000 day voyage I never could have completed it. Isn't it amazing that the rudder made it through that voyage? How can we keep going on? After sailing at sea for longer than any boat in history, doing it on a survival budget and going forward with no budget, how is it possible? Are they sailing at the mercy of the wind direction (i.e. gybing and running before the wind)? So, what about the repair that Andy reported 3 days ago on his blog, as being done on the rudder -- "That's all about fixed by now though. I had to dive in the open ocean and go under the boat to fix our rudder problem. That was fun and extremely cold. Saw some jelly fish. And everyone is alive and well.

Now we're headed to the sweet, sweet Caribben (crossing the Gulf Stream today)"

 

My question is, what fix? Reid is still saying "Onward schooner with no steering wheel! "?? Something does not compute here. Either it is fixed or not. Anyway, a boat without a rudder seems like a disaster waiting to happen. Not good!

 

...and this "beyond fear" shit, sounds a bit like, "devil may care." Also not good for the "captain" of a ship. :(

Then at least it would tend to go ahead of the wind and prevent the boat from rounding up. Anyway, how do you steer around an obstacle in your path, with a fixed rudder? Geez, Louise!

One option for restoring steerage when you lose your helm or quadrant is to tie two lines to the top of the trailing edge of the rudder. One line going starboard, one line going port. Then from deck you can pull one line or the other line to turn the rudder and steer the boat. In some ocean-going cruising boats you can even see a hole preformed in the top of the trailing edge of the rudder for just this purpose.

 

I have no idea if Reid and crew pusued this path to their current problems.

 

And yes - I feel very, very sorry for the pathetic wretches who are stuck out at sea on this floating piece of crap. Its pretty clear that none of them (absent Reid and Sonya) had any idea of what they were getting into, or how poorly prepared they and the boat were for this trip. I suspect most of them deeply regret being out there. I suspect if the boat were any further to the west, you would have seen them pull into port and drop off a good number of the crew. Perhaps Reid thought about that as he plotted his easterly route down to the Caribbean...

The jury-rigged lines (IF that is indeed what they were able to accomplish) to the rudder would NOT be fixed in one position unless they wished to remain navigating in a more-or-less straight line.

If you wished to alter course to either port or starboard, you would simply tighten the line of the direction you wished to turn while slackening off the other.

 

To me it is inconceivable that this POS was more ill-prepared for this trip than the 1000 days driftathon.

 

"It's better to be ashore wishing you were at sea than at sea wishing you were ashore."

Missus Backstay and I are happily spending next week with our 21 and 25 yo daughters in Charleston and I can't imagine how the parents of Rachel, Carly and those young men feel about this, if they even have a clue....:(

My question above was not as stupid as you think. It had occurred to me that two lines would do the trick, but I was mainly questioning the contradictions in Reid's account, and that of Andy. From Reid's own words, there was never any indication that they could "steer" anywhere.

 

Carry on, my sailing instructor. I shall prep myself for the upcoming exam. The question is, how to jury-rig a rudder without batting an eye! B)

Your description was actually more helpful, because it described how one could actually keep changing the rudder's angle to the transom, although this would require one or two people to slacken and/or tighten two separate lines. That is why you call it a temporary/emergency fix. Not suitable in gale-force winds, when a quicker response may be required! ;)

Oh, is THAT how you're supposed to deal with them? Then why are mine stainless? It's taking them a long time to rust. Can I use the boat in the mean time?

Your description was actually more helpful, because it described how one could actually keep changing the rudder's angle to the transom, although this would require one or two people to slacken and/or tighten two separate lines. That is why you call it a temporary/emergency fix. Not suitable in gale-force winds, when a quicker response may be required! ;)

I hope that last post was just made up bullshit. If all that is really true then Reid should be banned from ever being near a boat again for subjecting his "crew" to this voyage of the damned.

 

I gues they couldn't wait until the turnbuckles had completely rusted in place...

 

 

Oh, is THAT how you're supposed to deal with them? Then why are mine stainless? It's taking them a long time to rust. Can I use the boat in the mean time?

 

Clearly you and Reid have different standards of what constitutes proper marine gear and maintenance. I'm willing to bet that you even put cotter pins or lock nuts on your turnbuckles too. Where is the adventure in that?

 

The only thing approaching stainless steel on the Cheese Scow is the flatware, and even that is of dubious origin.

Day 10 of the Voyage to the Mystic Jungles of Guyana, and already 41,110 views on this thread. Do we have enough time to make it to 100,000? For the sake of everyone on board the Anne, I sure hope so! Of course, most critical is the safety of those on the boat who were unaware of the risks involved. Not that I don't value the lives of all concerned, but when one knowingly and willingly puts oneself in harm's way, no one should feel sorry for the consequences. Think of the risk of climbing Mt. Everest. Even with the best of preparations, one is flirting with death, plain and simple, and no one should feel sorry if you don't make it!

Agreed, the toddler most likely was kept in the dark about the dangers -- "Darshen, we are going on an adventure. You'll love it!" -- and certainly he did not have a choice about going, unless someone removed him forcibly from his parents' care. So on both counts, he is innocent, and belongs in the same class as any of the other crew members who were duped.

Back in 1987 the Anne was seaworthy and in good mechanical repair. Except for lots of deck leaks, the crew in the hold had visqeen tents set up over their berths. Now I would worry about all that rebar that's the backbone of the boat rusting.

The jury-rigged lines (IF that is indeed what they were able to accomplish) to the rudder would NOT be fixed in one position unless they wished to remain navigating in a more-or-less straight line.

If you wished to alter course to either port or starboard, you would simply tighten the line of the direction you wished to turn while slackening off the other.

 

To me it is inconceivable that this POS was more ill-prepared for this trip than the 1000 days driftathon.

First Reid says that the rudder stock broke from the rudder and he put his hand into the packing gland to confirm that the rudder is still there. Then his crew writes that he had been in the water and fixed the problem. Then the latest post blusters about being broken down and how they will persevere, blah, blah, blah,etc, but does not say what is/is not being done. It sounds like they may/may not have effected a jury rig or they do/do not know what to do. I am curious to hear what is being done. This is a serious breakdown and he has others to think about.

I stand corrected, couchsurfer! The other crew members (the so-called new recruits) went willingly, which is not the case of Darshen, but as for knowledge of what they were getting into, they were definitely fooled. But does that make them fools, or trusting innocents? That is the question.
