Exhaustive List of Lifting Keel / Drop Keel Boats

Recommended Posts

I am wondering if there are any lifting keel / drop keel sailboats in the 24' to 35' range where the keel height can be adjusted while under sail. I want to learn more about the lifting keel solutions out there and try to find which boat has the best system. I am not sure about a hydraulic system as I think a boat with a hydraulic system will be outside my price range, even used. More I am looking for a boat which can include the up setting (for beaching / trailering), down sailing for sailing in wind and then one (or two) mid setting(s) for lighter winds, shallow waters, running, etc. Ideally the boat would be able to change keel settings while underway so it will probably have an enclosure to store the keel when all the way up or all the way down. I am interested boats from 24' on up, so we are talking about a system which can raise / lower a keel weighing at least 1,000 pounds.

I figure the easiest way to find this boat would be to create a list of all lifting keel / drop keel boats ever made and then describe what kind of drop keel they have. I will start the list with the only drop keel boat I have ever sailed on:

Hobie 33 - Drop keel but keel is fixed while under sail. No enclosure. Requires external mechanism to raise the keel.

S2 7.9 ~600 lb board with 4 to 1 purchase for raising and lowering with the secondary wench

This is the only one I have experience with that has a lifting keel where it's allowed to lift in the class rules.

there are plenty of lifting keel boats that do not allow lifting the keel while racing. And there are plenty of older keel/centerboard designs which do, like the Tartan 27 or the Pearson Wanderer.

If you're not class racing, the Elliott 770 (25') will do what you want, though I don't recommend it. The keel is 850 lbs, the crane is permanently mounted over the keel slot. the lifting line goes through about an 8:1 purchase to one of the cabin-mounted primaries. It takes me about 4 minutes to raise it all the way to put it on the trailer, including a break or two because the f'er is heavy.

One of the lake lanier boats (I think it was there - may have been gulf coast) raised the keel halfway on a reach in violation of the class rules. I don't think there's any advantage to that at all, actually, given the chord of the keel to begin with. However, when they gybed and the lazy sheet caught the rope clutch handle and 850 lbs went crashing through the delrin retaining blocks, the fella learned WHY the class rules were written the way they were. It was an expensive lesson, since he had chartered the boat for the race.

While underway - you will find that very few lift keel boats do this while under way. IF any for that matter.

The design that allows for lifting while under way is the swing center board. C&C's and a few other boats in your size range used these and they were quite popular in places of thin water along the eastern coast lines like Florida etc.

Vertical lifting keels have loads on them and they are generally designed to be in the full up position or full down position with no load on them between those two points. Meaning the boat is basically stopped while you lift the keel.

The Lindenburg 22 was configured like the S2 7.9 with a winch on the cabin top. the keel form was constant section all the way down, so could be sailed without it flopping around.

Mine at 31ft lifts into the cabin, but the keel shape is only snug in the trunk fully down (a tapered section).

I can lift it temporarly if stuck on the bottom

Confirming that the S2 7.9 can be raced keel up - if you are willing. I sail in S2 7.9 fleet #1 at Macatawa Bay Yacht Club and we (the fleet) don't actually crank ours up during either our casual or more serious races, just because it is a pain in the rear. It can be tempting when behind on a downwind leg though.

I actually just happened across this article on the class site which talks about the official class rules for keel-up http://www.sail79s.org/pages/miscpgs/BOARDUP.HTM

Adams 13 is a shoal keel/cassette rudder fast cruiser with an unballasted (negatively bouyant) daggerboard. Raised by a cabin top winch and routinely retracted when off the wind. Rudder blade can be retracted to a position above the shoal keel when motoring but not recommended under sail (don't ask how I know  )

At 23', the Santana 23 doesn't qualify.

Oh well...

I think the B25 has a drop keel but I do not think it can be raised while under way. Melges 24 have a similar arrangement.

'82 MacGregor 25 has a 625 lb. swing keel. Leave it down to weather, up downwind or light conditions. Raise it when grounded. Or here on the Chesapeake, "mudded".

There is a

Kiwi 22 . I am still thinking about one. Seems it was a up or down thing. Frack rig, open ended cotpit Flush deck, deck stepped mast, Light weight. Keel was a dagger pulled up into the cabin top with a short trunk. Im not sure if it was movable under way..

Would kind of agree with that. We always have ours fully down and locked just in case of a knock down/broach, last thing you need is 250kg+ swinging around the deck.

The only exception is in light (5-7kt) air we might retract the keel halfway after popping the kite, the boat has lots form stability though.

Right on! I bet that got the skipper's attention!

Our Adams 13 has a shoal draft rudder but it just manages on a work. She loves a reach and the board does come up for running.

Did a 13 get stateside?

Cheers,

Back in the IOR days Irwin Comp. 30, a 1/2 tonner with a lift it underway dagger board. More modern is the Beneteau First Class 8 has a swing keel, uses a jack screw and is pretty easy to adjust while sailing.

Sure

Here ya go

This is not "exhaustive" but it's got a lot of boats on it. Some I am not sure of the ability to raise the keel while underway but most are. It used to be common for production builders (Columbia, Morgan, Irwin, to name just a few) to build boats patterned after the CCA rating rule, which encouraged wide beam, long shallow keels with attached rudders, and centerboards. These boats are not as fast nor as roomy as their modern counterparts but they (mostly) are good-looking & capable boats. Then there was a fad for centerboards & daggerboards in hot racing boats in the mid/late 1970s. Some of these boats are still around, some were adapted to mass production.

My personal taste in boats runs to the practical, and since our area contains a lot of shallow water, I like lifting keels too. It takes more maintenance BUT it greatly increases the range of sail-able waters. It can also reduce expenses because you can put the boat in a cheap slip nobody else wants.

This list is taken from a large database of about 3500 boats, contributed to by many including some regulars here who used to inhabit ALT.SAILING.ASA ... and many thanks are due...

Enjoy, and happy hunting

The Mirage 236 has a drop keel, actually more like a daggerboard. The daggerboard/keel is unballasted and is raised or lowered with a 2-1 purchase lead to a winch on the mast support. The keel can be raised or lowered while under sail, and can be locked in at all the way up or down, so you don't need to worry about it slamming around if you get knocked over.

Ross 780.

Keel sits in a trunk that runs from hull to deck, just aft of the bulkhead. For raising and lowering, the standard setup includes a 6:1 tackle lead back to the cabin top winch. If I remember correctly, a few owners have installed electric winches. I believe that there is about 1000 lbs in the keel.

Not that this topic has not been covered 3 or 4 times here. I have a Lindneberg 22 you can raise the keel under sail, down wind is money with the keel up. Yes I know you said 24 I thought I would throw it in. The Tripp 26 is the nicest boat in the range you are speculating about. The keel can not be raised under sail but no need it smokes running just off the wind. And the point of this is? your google broke?

Adams 13 is a shoal keel/cassette rudder fast cruiser with an unballasted (negatively bouyant) daggerboard. Raised by a cabin top winch and routinely retracted when off the wind. Rudder blade can be retracted to a position above the shoal keel when motoring but not recommended under sail (don't ask how I know  )

Right on! I bet that got the skipper's attention!

Our Adams 13 has a shoal draft rudder but it just manages on a work. She loves a reach and the board does come up for running.

Did a 13 get stateside?

Cheers,

Jim B)

Unfortunately, no. A Yank lived in Melbourne for a few years.

Years ago I owned an Ericson 23 with a swing keel that could be hoisted up via winch while underway. The swing portion of keel stowed away inside of the permanent keel - which was pretty nice if we wanted to beach the boat. Old Catalina 22s also had a swing keel but it was merely a huge chunk of lead that was exposed (ya didn't wanna run it aground even with keel up.

I've had my Ross 780 for 3 years. Like Goonda says, trunk goes from the bottom up thru the deck. One I've seen added a Harken Electric Winc ($1800 US), I'm working on a rig with a 2:1 to an $80 ATV winch. Not marine grade but I can go thru quite a few before I hit $1800. At 2:1 I'll be looking at a 45second lift/lower time. Just weighed my Boat and Keel. Keel is 525#, Boat is 2300# without any keel, rig, gear, or...full up sailing probably 3100# plus crew.
