      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Exotic automaker Maserati to try yacht racing

Somehow, the European makers of really fast cars can't seem to avoid sinking loads of cash into really slow boats. Well, really slow by sports car standards, but absolute greyhounds in the yachting world. The latest is Maserati.

 

Exotic car maker Maserati just announced that it is building a yacht with the goal of breaking transatlantic records. Its record-hundred executives have their eye on several runs, including Miami to New York, following old clipper ship routes. It joins Audi, Volvo and other automakers that have dipped their toe in the seawater.

 

Maserati, along with Swiss bank BSI (what European monetary crisis?) have hired a veteran skipper and are building their boat. At least Maserati's symbol is King Neptune's trident, so it has some relationship to the water.

 

"I am happy that two major companies have decided to approach the world of ocean sailing by

supporting this important Italian enterprise," said Giovanni Soldini, the sailor who will helm the venture. He has two

circumnavigations and over 30 Atlantic crossings in his seabag. "Breaking the North Atlantic record has always been one of my life's dreams."

 

Maserati will fly the pennant of the Yacht Club Italiano, which was founded in 1879 and is the oldest sailing club in the Mediterranean.

Good move I think: it would be almost impossible for Maserati to make a significant name in motor racing without incredible expenditure. Yet this should have good image effect.

 

That their symbol is a trident is a truly happy coincidence.

Maserati presents its race against time, teaming up with world-renowned sailor Giovanni Soldini in an attempt to break three important and historic North Atlantic sailing records.

 

FIAT chairman, John Elkann and the president of the Yacht Club Italiano, Carlo Croce, introduce the challenge, where Soldini and his team of nine sailors will next year captain the yacht Maserati in an attempt to break the Cadiz-San Salvador (Bahamas), Miami-New York and New York-Lizard Point (UK) records. The three ocean course attempts will be monitored by the World Sailing Speed Record Council, the international body certifying the record times on the historic clipper routes.

 

“I am happy that two major companies have decided to approach the world of ocean sailing by supporting this important Italian enterprise", said Giovanni Soldini, who already has two circumnavigations and over 30 Atlantic crossings to his name. “We intend to be the first Italian boat to set a record on an official WSSRC route and breaking the North Atlantic record has always been one of my life’s dreams.”

 

While the principal partner for the challenge is Maserati, whose name has been given to the boat, the challenge is co-sponsored by the Swiss bank BSI (Generali Group) and Generali itself. Maserati will fly the pennant of the Yacht Club Italiano, which was founded in 1879 and is the oldest sailing club in the Mediterranean Sea. Maserati

 

Maserati is a VOR 70 that participated in the 2008-2009 round-the-world race. An ultra-technological boat of over 20 metres, it makes a case to be the world's fastest single-hull yacht thanks to a carbon-fibre mast more than 30 metres high, a canting keel, mobile water ballast tanks, forward canard fins, its extremely sleek waterlines and its structures in composite materials. As Soldini explains: “After three months in dry dock, Maserati is 10% lighter and more powerful, with a greater self-righting capacity. We have worked to obtain a more stern-heavy configuration, thus making Maserati particularly well suited to sailing at higher speeds.”

 

The records

 

The schedule of records presents approximate dates, bearing in mind each voyage has to start with ideal meteorological conditions, which will be decided at the last moment by a team of meteorologists. If conditions are favourable, Giovanni Soldini and Maserati will also attempt to break the record for the longest distance covered by a single-hull yacht in a 24-hour period.

 

January 2012: Cadiz-San Salvador (Bahamas) – 3,884 miles (no time reference to beat: absolute record held by Franck Cammas, trimaran Groupama, May 2007).

 

March 2012: Miami-New York – 947 miles (no time reference to beat: absolute record held by Frank Cammas, trimaran Groupama, June 2007).

 

April 2012: New York-Lizard Point (UK) – 2,925 miles (record to beat 6 days, 17 hours, 52 minutes, 39 seconds set by Robert Miller aboard the monohull Mary Cha IV, October 2003; average speed of 18.5 knots).

 

According to the schedule Maserati will be put into the water in November 2011. November and December 2011 will be devoted to fine-tuning the boat and selecting and training the crew.

So they are not in fact "building a maxi". They aren't building anything.

Luxury goods like Maserati can be recession proof, the people that buy them aren't so affected by the broader economy. Swiss Private Banking is doing pretty well, the country is attracting lots of funds as it's outside the eurozone. UBS got hit as it had a big US operation, the smaller Swiss private banks do not. I saw also that the bank is owned by Generali so an Italian / IMOCA 70 / Figaro-2 sailing connection

I think the commercial agreement covers this and specifically permits it provided there is no unfriendly media against Volvo and provided the Volvo name is used in press releases etc.

Maserati! It's 2012, your logo is a Trimaran symbol, and 2 of your so called records are now, and still will be, held by the trimaran Groupama!!! For Gods sake sponsor a Mod 70 Tri and get yourselves a decade of publicity! Ditto to Ratan Tata, sponsor a Jaguar Mod 70! and park the new CX76 and the XKRS on the dock. Jesus, Jaguars and Trimarans! WOW.

Giovanni Soldini and Maserati prepare for attempt at Cadiz-San Salvador speed record

A professional 8-man crew including American Brad Van Liew challenges the Atlantic Ocean

 

The first ambitious challenge at a speed record in the North Atlantic by Giovanni Soldini and Maserati was announced today in Milan. As from early February a crew of eight led by Soldini will be engaged in seeking to become the new record holder between Cadiz (Spain) and San Salvador (Bahamas) on board Maserati, which has been completely overhauled. Maserati is a 70-foot racing yacht optimized for extreme speed.

 

 

In addition to skipper Soldini, Maserati will be crewed by 7 capable yachtsmen with a past track record in open ocean-going regattas and in competitions such as the America's Cup. German Boris Herrmann (navigator), American Brad Van Liew (watch leader) and Spaniard David Vera (watch leader) will make up a team completed by four Italians: Gabriele Olivo (trimmer), Guido Broggi (boat captain), Gerardo Siciliano (second bowman), and Corrado Rossignoli (first bowman).

 

 

The record for Cadiz-San Salvador run, 3884 miles long, is monitored by the World Sailing Speed Record Council, the international body that gives official status to the fastest sailing times along the historical routes once plied by clippers. In the past the record was set only by maxi trimarans. Maserati will attempt to be the first to establish the record for the monohull category. Two additional North Atlantic records that Soldini and crew will attempt to break in 2012 aboard Maserati include Miami-New York and New York-Lizard Point (UK).

 

 

"The challenge is a demanding one, given the length and the difficulty of the route," explains Soldini. "During the first part our concerns will be with the area of high pressure blocking our path near the Azores. During the second part the difficulties will be posed by fronts and depressions which, if too low, will slow the boat down. At the same time it's great to have a chance like this and I am delighted with the entire crew".

 

 

American Brad Van Liew and Soldini have a notable history together, having both competed in the Around Alone race of 1998-99, when extreme weather in the Southern Ocean forced Soldini to the rescue of a capsized fellow competitor (Isabelle Autissier) and Van Liew to a dismasting.

 

 

"It is exciting to be working with my old friend Giovanni," said Van Liew. "It is a wonderful collaborative effort and a fresh, new type of sailing for me. It takes me back to my crewed racing roots which is an exciting departure from my solo sailing competitions. I welcome the race against time."

www.maserati.soldini.it which will be on line starting today. In addition to news, video footage, and photos directly from the boat, browsers can be sure to find reports on the meteorological conditions and to keep tabs on the position and the speed of Maserati.

 

 

News will be provided on the three record attempts, as well as on movements between regatta locations and the onshore preparatory work. There will also be constant updates using prominent social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, shown on the home page.

 

 

Backing for this challenge is provided by Maserati, the main partner in the endeavour, which gives its name to the boat. It is flanked by the Swiss bank BSI (Generali Group), and by Generali, which are co-sponsors.

 

 

The official suppliers for the undertaking are Vodafone Italia, in charge of the telecommunication services and of the website implementation, Murphy&Nye, the brand that will provide the sailing gear for the crew, Bulgari as Official Time Keeper, and Boero Bartolomeo S.p.A. providing paint and enamel for the hull.

 

 

On board Maserati are also Eataly, supplier in charge of the boat's galley, Beta Utensili providing all the professional sailboat hardware, Corderia Lancelin providing customised performance ropes, FPT Industrial for engine assistance, Jeppesen for cartography, B&G Navico providing assistance for the on board instruments, Picchiotti Shipyard in La Spezia where Maserati is based on ground and theAutorità Portuale di La Spezia where Maserati is based in the water.

2/3 records they're trying to "break" don't have any reference time as it is. No matter what they're guaranteed to set a record. Hell, even a Mac26X could probably set the record.

This project is a bit crap : refurbishing an old VOR70 and claim it is the fastest high end technological boat. :blink:

 

they shoudl try to beat Banque Populaire atlantic time... this would be a true challenge :P

This all looks pretty lame unfortunately which is a pity for Giovanni, hope they keep it together for a proper shot at the Volvo next time round.

It is a bit lame, but I think Giovanni has been very good in building a small budget "sellable" product for the sponsor / owner. They could not get the budget for volvo and so this is a B plan keeping alive the team, himself and the chances for next tour. I do not think there was any problem with maserati if not that they would /could not finance a 20M EUR volvo. They were never into that. This project was born after they drop volvo.

So the two "first/fake" records are to get nice visibility and entertain young owner John Elkann (he is supposed to be onboard for the miami new york)who bought erikkson3 hoping that the team would then find sponsors enough for volvo race. For him onboard, as a non professional, it is going to be a great experience and tough and fun. Nice way to spend his money, kudos

 

Still, if Giovanni were to take the mari-cha record on nord atlantic with this boat , the third record he is attempting and the only challenging one, well, that would be another story. It would be one of the gratest sailing accomplishments, really an important record. But I think it is almost impossible (probably he also thinks the same ;) )

 

In any case, as usual, great job by Giovanni on communications, videos etc. He still is one of the bests in this and always very careful to deliver his sponsors with best possible...

Love the underlying humour in this. Maserati buy a used Volvo and rebadge it as Maserati to promote their performance heritage/pedigree.

 

In the end its great another $ sponsor is getting involved in the sport.

I only see 8 according to the crew page and the press release above says Maserati is sailing with 8.

Taken from a post I put in the wrong place and edited a bit. I find it a fucking shame and a testimate to the state of professional sailing in the US that this 80' masterpiece of monohull speed sailing is sitting in the harbor of the best sailing town in the Southeast, (Charleston) and hardly anyone knows or cares about it.

 

Maybe it's the corporate sponsor "Maserati" who wants to keep it quiet in the US. Maybe its getting play in the european news, but what little play it's getting here is dicey and inaccurate.

 

After a 3 minute conversation w/one of the 2 Italian crew members who were on board today servicing winches when I found her here's what I got.

 

They established the first atlantic crossing record in 10 days, (some hours and some minutes). Average speed was over 17 knots. There are 8 of them sailing which looks like a big handfull for 8 guys.

 

Next up is the 24hr speed/distance record to be sailed out of Charleston! Yes, they will start right fucking here and I have not heard word 1 about this. Again, perhaps Maserati has no concern for possible US press from this.

 

After that they will make a run on the New York/Lizzard Point record.

 

At some point they will go to Maimi to entertain Maserati execs and allow them on the boat for tours and rides. However, beyond the crew and the Maserati people no one else will be allowed on board. That was a bummer. I would have loved to see down below, but I was not going to push. The guys seemed pretty intent on their work and least I be the one that caused a distraction where something got missed on a winch that caused a record ending breakdown along the way.

 

So, respect to the crew and the boat, but WTF with any kind of PR on this program? I snapped 4 decent pics and have them on my facebook page. Don't know how to get them here and honestly not interested in doing so. If you want to see the pics just send a friend request to me. Let me know you saw this on SA and I'll hit the accept button.

It's an attempt only in the sense of attempting to make it to New York at all. Any arrival at all will become the record.

 

In their announcement I think they called it establishing a record, or something like that, which did make it clear that there is no record presently.

They didn't even bother with getting it ratified, didn't feel as if they had set a good enough time to warrent it.

I think they have been pretty straight about what they are doing and whether there is a record to break.

 

At least they are getting some publicity and a sponsor into sailing.

hei everyone, volvo lovers...this is worth some more attention. these guy are on fire, in advance of 50 Nm on mari-cha's record. going very fast

this is a huge attempt, seems a good weather window till now..

 

expedition, can you make some preview..etc, based on vo70 polars (even if boat slightly changed..)

 

please note that even if in records there is no limit they are racing in 8 people only. I would have taken a couple more, for giovanni 6 or 7 too much probably..(mari-cha had 22).

"We are chasing one of sailing’s most prestigious records and we are trying to beat a very fast pace set by Mari Cha IV. Here is the current situation. First, we have embraced a much different approach from a weather strategy point of view. Mari Cha IV left New York behind a cold front on NW winds that carried them much of the way to England before they had to tack on a high pressure area for the last third of the attempt. This meant they were on a fast port reach until tacking to starboard allowing the wind to free them back to a starboard reach for the final approach to England. The opportunity that presented itself to us is the opposite. We left New York ahead of an arriving cold front on Southerly winds that should carry us much of the way Across the Atlantic and then we will need to gybe to port and hook into a low pressure system to the north pushing us to the finish. Both theories work well but we need the wind to stay steady and it has been a bit lighter than forecast for the several of hours of the voyage.

 

The other point of significance is that we are doing our attempt in the spring instead of the fall which means spring icebergs south and east of Newfoundland. I will talk more about icebergs in tomorrow’s blog as that will definitely be on the front of our brains for the following day. Today is all about trying to stay in the best wind strength possible as the forecasted 22 knots has been elusive and we are currently in wonderful tight reaching conditions of 17 knots. Normally lovely, but not the crazy record breaking conditions we need. So our fingers are crossed for the big noisy show that Maserati is so gifted at.

 

Life on board is getting chilly and it is wet, but nothing like when we will sail through the North Atlantic cocktail in a couple days. I can’t decide if that cocktail should be served with crushed or full size ice cubes but neither sounds very good to me at the moment, and I happen to know that a mixture is on order.

To bad for Soldini but he's not going to break the record from Mari Cha IV.

they are on two / thirds now and Mari cha is virtualy leading by a lot.

Mari cha 4 was bigger then the VO 70, Measured on deck length exactly 80 feet longer.

Well they got another transatlantic record at least, Cape2Rio in just under 12 days, taking 2 days off an old record. I watched them start in Table Bay and followed them out to Bloubergstrand. Great looking boat leading the way over Scarlet Runner and others. They survived a stromy blast on the first night at sea, a Saturday, that took out 1/4 of the fleet, and from there is was all SE trades to Rio. I was kitesurfing on the Sunday when that blast came through, and it was great with SEaster to 30 knots and huge waves.

The Rambler (Reichel/Pugh 90ft WATER BALLASTED) is holding the Rolex Middle Sea Race record with Elapsed Time: d1 h23 m55 s3 since the stormy Race of 2007; in that race australian entry - 60ft Loki (built in 2005 on Reichel/Pugh design) lost her rudder and subsequently washed onto the rocks and had been totaly lost.

Fixed it for ya...
