      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Alinghi 5 donated to Valencia

Not sure if this made the wires in the states, but I'm spending the holidays in Spain, and it was on the news that Ernie donated A5 to the city of Valencia.

 

Rita thanked him profusely and is in the process of figuring out how to import it. I guess it was taken back to CH.

 

Anyway,.. kind of surprising to me. I don't know where they would be able to show it in a way that would be interesting. I've seen the Stars and Stripes catamaran in Valle de Bravo, and it isn't much to look at while at anchor, and it has a wing . A5 with its sails down will look like stage rigging from ground level. Furthermore, I wouldn't expect too much interest in the loser.

 

I suppose that as a city mayor, I'd take it if it was free... but installed. Just moving the thing, setting it up, and putting it in a display will cost millions.

 

Maybe that is what Ernie is doing... providing it delivered and installed.

 

Anyway, interesting.

 

A5 looks to get a better display that USA 17 which I've seen in her white shrink-wrap on the dock in SF. But I'm sure that will change when SF gets built out.

I read a translated article somewhere where the gist is that A5 was imported duty-free into Valencia from RAK, and that duty is now payable. Also mentioned (in pidgin English translation) is that it'll cost millions to accept the "loser gift" unwanted by it's mother YC.

A5 never left VLC. She has been in storage there since AC33.

 

In spite of losing, she is one cool boat. Doubt she will ever sail again... She and USA17 are a bit like Shamrock III and Reliance from 1903 - spectacular but not very practical for anything other than an AC Match. Of course, being good for an AC Match is quite an impressive quality for a yacht...

In 1987, after Mercury Bay Boat Club filed its valid challenge the COO of Sail America Foundation was quoted in the press as sailing, "We'll jimmy the rules to win this thing."

 

The court's final decision (2 years after the racing) pointed out that it was not the court's job to figure out what is fair, just what is legal. Figuring out what is legal is part of the AC game. In 1987 Sail America Foundationa and SDYC did a poor job of understanding what was a legal challenge. In 1988, Mercury Bay did a poor job of figuring out what was a legal defender. In 2007 Alinghi and SNG did a poor job of figuring out what was a yacht club. In 1851, Robert Underwood, the English pilot on board America, did a good job of figuring out the "sailing instructions" he was given and correctly understood that America did not need to round the Nab light vessel.

 

It would appear that figuring out the rules is as much a part of the AC tradition as designing a fast boat.

is an article about the transfer but its in spanish. The gist is what I mentioned at the start. Just adds that they are leaving their base at the end of the month. Seems the two issues are linked somehow? Anyway, they speak of great affection between Ernesto and themselves.

 

Then talks about how VLC is taking over ownership of the promoter of their F1 race.

 

Seems that the sports spectacle business is tough even in the mainline.

one can not but admire the cheek of evil Ernie; as "prueba del afecto" he offloads a piece of debris, sort of like leaving my old broken car in front of your door and telling you that out of sympathy for you, you can have it, quite the win win situation :D

I think this is a nice gesture from good old EB. As much as poor Rita Barbie Doll, and the city of VLC, were jerked around during the AC33 shit fight, this seems like the least EB could do. A5 is an impressive boat regardless of its record on the water. And here is hoping the donation, and placement, of A5 somewhere in VLC will help ensure that fabulously built harbor stays an epicenter for high performance sail boat racing, instead of turning it back into a commericial fishing port. For me, without the AC I had no desire to visit VLC anytime soon. Now considering A5 will be on display, that has changed. IMO, thats a good thing.

 

And I know it has probably zero chance of happening, but if Uncle Larry has a decent bone in his body, once AC34 is over, he should donate USA-17 to VLC as well. Both boats on display where their historic race took place would be fabulous on a number of levels.

There was two cats I think, one with and one without a wing.

I think they knew that the soft-sail cat was fast enough even without the wing so they went for the cat with greater reliability to guarantee themselves the win.

Last I heard USA 17 was going to be put on pubic display in SF, on one of the piers. Pier 39 was a candidate at one time, but that may have changed. The wing was slated to be on display at a separate SF location - possibly SFO, which would make a nice banner for those traveling to SF for AC34.

I think I'd differ a bit here. KZ1 did indeed lose, and was in fact stored without fanfare for many years. After NZ's success with the AC, she was brought to her current perch in the Viaduct as a symbol of the beginning of their quest. My opinion is that she looks nice, if a bit neglected on her perch. But the symbolism of the installation has nothing to do with losing, or even the legal battle, but rather with "discovery" and the quest for the cup which is the whole purpose of the museum right in front. Even the plaque is very short on the controversy, and long on the quest for the cup.

 

A5 I think would have I think a much harder case to make for its place in Valencia. I suppose it would be a monument to Valencia's pursuit of the business of the AC. But to me, it would essentially be like a former F1 participant car being displayed at the Casino in Monte Carlo. Very interesting fast object, but not interesting in the same way KZ1 is in Auckland.

I think they knew that the soft-sail cat was fast enough even without the wing so they went for the cat with greater reliability to guarantee themselves the win.

 

The soft sail was the safe bet, the wing was faster but riskier if something happened as they only had the one, a capsizee and it was over. DC wanted to make sure they were faster so went with the riskier option.

I gotta say, living just a couple of km from the Viaduct ... KZ1 is just an eyesore. It's not being maintained, it's covered in rust stains and the paint is peeling. Auckland could do much, much better ...

Follow A STUNNING £100million super yacht was spotted gracing waters off Plymouth during yesterday's sunshine.

 

The spectacular six-deck 'Vava II' is the largest private motor yacht ever to have been constructed in Britain.

The 96-metre-long vessel set off on a sea trials voyage from Devonport Dockyard yesterday afternoon.

 

Much of its construction has been top secret, but the yacht is scheduled to be handed over to its new owner later this month.

 

It is understood to have been commissioned by Swiss pharmaceutical magnate and two-time America's Cup winner Ernesto Bertarelli.

 

There were more than 20 people on board when visitors to Plymouth's waterfront caught a glimpse of Vava II cutting elegantly through the Sound yesterday.

 

Originally dubbed simply 'Project 55', the vessel was christened at the dockyard in September, where about 200 workers have been involved in its two-year construction.

 

The hull was built in Appledore, in North Devon, exteriors styled by Hampshire-based yacht design firm Redman Whitely Dixon and interiors designed by the renowned Remi Tessier.

 

But the engineering was all carried out in Plymouth, by workers employed by Devonport Royal Dockyard Limited.

 

The contract had remained with that firm when the luxury yacht brand Devonport Yachts was acquired from Devonport dockyard operator Babcock by Falmouth-based Pendennis Shipyard in February in 2010.

 

The vessel, equipped with helicopter landing capabilities and four tenders, is expected to set a new standard in the charter market.

Plymouth watches £100million super yacht set out on sea trials

Follow A STUNNING £100million super yacht was spotted gracing waters off Plymouth during yesterday's sunshine.

 

The spectacular six-deck 'Vava II' is the largest private motor yacht ever to have been constructed in Britain.

The 96-metre-long vessel set off on a sea trials voyage from Devonport Dockyard yesterday afternoon.

 

Much of its construction has been top secret, but the yacht is scheduled to be handed over to its new owner later this month.

 

It is understood to have been commissioned by Swiss pharmaceutical magnate and two-time America's Cup winner Ernesto Bertarelli.

 

There were more than 20 people on board when visitors to Plymouth's waterfront caught a glimpse of Vava II cutting elegantly through the Sound yesterday.

 

Originally dubbed simply 'Project 55', the vessel was christened at the dockyard in September, where about 200 workers have been involved in its two-year construction.

 

The hull was built in Appledore, in North Devon, exteriors styled by Hampshire-based yacht design firm Redman Whitely Dixon and interiors designed by the renowned Remi Tessier.

 

But the engineering was all carried out in Plymouth, by workers employed by Devonport Royal Dockyard Limited.

Actually as i look at the time table now this boat was started well before AC33 was even raced . He had both projects going at the same time . Evil Ernie has some serious coin but I guess we knew that .

Will enjoy seeing it, quite a stunning exercise in engineering too, must have taken one hell of an effort.

 

Not that building or designing a boat like A5 will be appreciated here....

A5 never left VLC. She has been in storage there since AC33.

 

In spite of losing, she is one cool boat. Doubt she will ever sail again... She and USA17 are a bit like Shamrock III and Reliance from 1903 - spectacular but not very practical for anything other than an AC Match. Of course, being good for an AC Match is quite an impressive quality for a yacht...

 

Yep, I saw A5 in Lausanne on 1 August (Switzerland National Day) up close ( I had a chance to touch it) and it is absolutely gorgeous. the first thing you saw was the mast from absolutely miles away, it was that huge.

Yes, if Oracle had not had the audacity to build a wing, it would have been a really interesting match and lets face it, it was the wing that made DZ awesome, the rest was just butt ugly, whereas A5 is overall breathtaking.
