      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Kotuku will be coming north, fully crewed, with kids and wives in tow. We love this race, and I really appreciate the job that WVYC does with it. Skippers meeting and weather briefing sets the bar for the entire PNW. Looking forward to another interesting race in 2012!

I see we get to go to Sister's again........Man I hate that place.

 

I hear ya mate but there is only so many places you can go around and it's harder and harder to find a suitable substitutes as the marine traffic "police" don't like us to invade "their" ocean! Would you prefer to round T10? Sandheads? Alden Bank???

 

At least it keeps it fresh and it's always been the mandate to not doing the same course over & over again.

 

I'm not a huge fan of Sisters either (and saying that two of the OA's we won have been Sisters races) but at least there is usually some wind there - sometimes too much.

Kinetic will be back for the long course as a pre Vic-Maui dial up. Last time we rounded Sisters, it was 3 reefs and a storm jib, and even that was a bit much ...

Ross MacDonald will be leading our discussion on race tactics for the 2012 Southern Straits event.

Ross MacDonald is one of Canada's most successful international sailors winning silver and bronze medals in the men's Star event.

Ross is a veteran of many local and international distance races and is one of the best resources for local sailors looking to improve their results and experience in this year's race.

We just survived 74 knots of a weather bomb here in the Campbell on Monday. It's blowing again today!

Memories of a couple of years ago!

Be careful of tempting the wind gods.

That said, wind is fun!

I am told that Kiva will be on the line with me aboard sleeping off something or mixing up something else!

Straits is quickly approaching but there is a seminar/pub night on Monday with David Jones of Environment Canada. He's always very knowledgeable and entertaining. He will be giving his long range forecast as well. Be there or be square!

Senior Meteorologist David Jones will be providing an introduction and guide to the high-resolution weather models available to sailors in the Pacific North West. David will also be providing the pre-race weather forecast on the awards night prior to race day.

The burning Question, are the torpedoes aiming at Canadian boats or American?

 

Hope everyone has fun this year, judging from the past month, it'll be chilly. My ride pulled out, so I'll watch from the sidelines, and hit the slopes instead.

The alternate long course would be new and different...

 

Would someone please fill-in a total newbie.... What does all this mean??? Why might the course change??? I'm not readin' English in 7.6......

In the middle of Georgia Strait they is a NATO Naval underwater test area. It is called Whiskey Gulf (WG) and is marked on the Canadian Coast guard maps. They routinely use nuclear subs to test TORPEDOES. When WG is active, the area is off limits to everyone. They will come to meet you with a helicopter and loud speaker if you enter the area. To find out if it active, one can listen to a Canadian weather forecast WX1, I think.

You definitely would have known if you entered it when active. I saw a very prominent political figure in BC escorted out when he wandered in to it. Also saw a Big Ass US sub on the surface once when I was a kid sailing nearby WG, it was pretty cool sight for a ten year old.

I've had the Orion go overhead just above mast height and drop flares to show me were the boundary was that I wasn't supposed to cross. :ph34r:

 

Ok, I was single-handed in 25 kts of breeze and precise navigation was a bit difficult....

 

I drive past Nanoose Harbour on the way to work every day and there has been a submarine operating almost daily. I read that they are busy testing our only operational submarine to see if it can actually fire our torpedoes.

How come the short/medium course is buttonhooking Entrance? Dundarave to Entrance then Halibut should be a starboard rounding at Entrance shouldn't it? Or is the idea to just always round it the same way to keep it simple...

Haven't been down to Sand Heads since my first ever Southern Straits when I was a kid. I recall it was snowing as we rounded, which has probably colored my impression of it as a totally god forsaken place. But who cares, it would be a change from the same 4 or 5 marks we have been going round the last 10 years. Bring it on!

I hear ya Schick but there was a lot grumbling about places like Sandheads, T10, Alden Bank etc with no wind and lots of current. And in the middle of night usually. The Committee(s) of the past have gone away from the eastern side of the strait for that reason. TA is in the "vicinity" of Sandheads but really more like in the middle.

 

And 7.6 & 7.7 are key - they are "alternates" only!

Ok, I get it, the RC doesn't want the short course rounding to starboard at Entrance when everyone else might be rounding to port if the short course boats are slow getting there. Gotcha.

 

Gonna be a bit weird in a southeaster for the short course - instead of it being a gybe mark it will be a douse, switch to whites, sail up wind for 200m, tack, bear off, and hoist kite again. Get the kids hungry for afternoon tea and biscuits.

Not too many years ago we were heading to Halibut. It was well after dark. This leg was downwind. We were crossing gybes with the Melges. We were sailing the long course, the Melges was sailing the short course. The Short course was leaving the mark to starboard, the long course had the leave it to port. We got to the mark (maybe) 10 boat lengths behind. I can still see it all happening.

It happened this morning but the "official" edict from WVYC isn't posted quite yet. No WG issues for the weekend so the original courses stay the same. Thank Xmas!

Looks like he's just now got some breeze, too little too late I'm afraid the Miura and Laser are too close.....unless, naw, there ain't enough distance to go.

 

As an aside it'd been better graphics if short and med course boats had been green and dark blue instead of green and light grey.

Just sayin', it was fun watching this.....

Good weekend for the McKee Bros. Charlie was tactitian on Mayhem for her win in St. Barths.

 

7 out of 13 entries for long course were Beneteaus. Must be a good dealer in Vancouver.

Great to see that Mad Max can dust off the cobwebs, crank it up and win the Long course overall! Kudos to Micah and team.B)

 

Best story of the weekend IMO, is Sean winning the short course, which was re-named in honor of his father, Buddy Story here

 

Yeah, lots of Beneteaus out to play every second year, as they get warmed up for the Vic Maui.

 

Well done to all the crew who stuck it out in very light wind and were rewarded on Saturday with more breeze than forecast.

There are incredible photos of sunsets, full moons and sunrises lighting up trimmed sails, popping up all over facebook. Sure has been a shift toward facebook the last couple years for story and photos sharing, esp. since the 2010 race.

Heck of a race. Lots of hero to zero moments, really good competition in our class. Slow motion tacking duels in the moonlight. Great reaching legs up and back from Halibut Bank. And a honking good ride home with Icon and the Car charging through our fleet to the finish while we battled with Kiva again, trying to catch every little wave to stay ahead.

 

Thanks to everybody who made this race happen. And thanks to everyone for the warm welcome at the finish--and the bottle of Bushmills, after inspection of course!

A brief note of tribute to the crew ( both on board and shore support ) of the Car. We had a great time, never stopped moving, and never stopped competing. It was a hard fought race. Kudo's to the race organizers and volunteers as well. We will be back!
