      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Added PredictWind

Anyone try Marine Weather by Bluefin? Looks alright.

marine weather by bluefin is a very different app to predictWind....also good on android...moves to SD card...very US (centric) though so no weather on the canadian side of the great lakes.

also it's more of a text forecast tool as opposed to a strictly graphic wind (by the hour) predictwind tool...for sailing the predict wind tool is very slick (gives the wind data from 2 different forecast models)...if you are wanting the near-term weather in a coastal area then the text forecast is nice....

I'd used marine weather last summer but deleted as it gave me a forecast I could get elsewhere...I don't think I'll delete predictwind as it seems like a 'one of a kind' product.

I went on their website and see that there are varying prices/features.

For those of you using it, are you using the free version, $25 per year for basic (its actually in British pounds so I'm guessing), $250 per year for standard, or $700 for professional?

The standard version claims it can give wind forcasts down to a 1km area... wonder how that does with see (lake) breezes...

Thanx for the replies,

Chaos

Hey Chaos

I don't recall if it was spam or a recommendation from here last year, but I used it for the end of the season and thought it was pretty good.

I used the free version and it was very close to SailFlow on content.

Cheers!

I tried it for our local lake, couldn't work out how it was computing the windflows since the nearest BOM site (aus) is about 20kms away. Didn't persevere since they were the old days, before even 3g wireless was easily available.

Maybe once more. I have an android somewhere.

I'm a fan.

Works better in USA than here (Halifax and East)

Coastal coverage (resolution) drops off a little East of here, but still good.

unfortunately, no windsurfing allowed on our lake, so nearest location about 15 miles away.. in texas that can be a big difference.. oh well.. sailflow location is only about 7 miles away... but as I found out this past sunday, was pretty inaccurate 5-10 with gust to 16 predicted... it was a freakin' floater out there..

I use it all the time, but don't use the iPhone version. I use their web-page and look at it on the iPad. Here in Santa Cruz they are the best at predicting our summer afternoon shift from the prevailing westerly to an light easterly. This can be the wining issue for a lot of races around here.

PredictWind data has been reliable on Lake Ontario; i have used their website with text only in the past on the iPhone... The new App looks pretty good.

I usually buy the 3-month Standard package ($79) and it does everything I need on the Great Lakes... those who need tidal and ocean currents will want to look at the Pro version.

What kind of free country is this that doesn't allow windsurfing on a lake? Which of your yachties got your knickers in a wad in the 80s and banned the fluorescent sails?
