      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Is anyone else looking forward to March sailing on central Puget Sound?

 

First up, Blakely Rock...get your Daffodils. :)

 

60 boats registered so far.

Tides are favorable.

Forecast looks good.

 

Friday night Derek Campbell will kick off the series with a chalk talk and everyone is invited. Dinner will be catered by Buca di Beppo for a fee of about $10 and the bar will be open. Talk starts at 7pm so arrive early!

 

There's a whole lotta boats on the registration list - how many will make it out? I see a new J145 - will the new Farr 30 be out?

 

Who's coming that has yet to register?

Will there be a Left Coast Dart sighting?

Did you guys hear that we are not necessarily doing Blakely Rock first? I heard the decision to do each race will be made the morning of.

Or is it a rumor by a competitor trying to mess with me?

It's a rumor. A good idea, but a rumor. They are going with reverse starts though which is long overdue.

 

I wonder if the lack of entries is in part due to the lack of excitement and advertising for this event? I mean the race is two days away and a thread is just starting...

CYC has been in a bit of a re-invention mode. I know they are trying to promote more aggressively, but perhaps a little late start this year.

 

Certain other clubs have been considerably more industrious in getting their race promotions out and perhaps more creative about events. And it shows. CYCs intention and plan is to become much more open and inviting to all comers.

 

What may have mis-interpreted is that, in a northerly, there is an alternate course that goes north to Carkeek park then to the rock...thus "we don't go to Blakely Rock first".

Exactly what I was wondering. I kept looking for a thread on CSS this week and scratching my head. We already have threads for Swiftsure, WIRW, and Van Isle 2013 ffs. You would think that a YC that is looking to bolster participation, membership, and revenue would've done a little "free marketing" a week or so ago?!

It's a rumor. A good idea, but a rumor. They are going with reverse starts though which is long overdue.

I really like reverse starts and the idea of course selection on race day, this makes for better sailing. CSS series needs more forward thinking and promotion to bolster participation.

How 'bout those big classes? Looks like the performance 30 fleet is in for a battle. Lots of classes with 10+ boats, except for the j-105s, who are apparently content to race amongst themselves. Rating spread in our class (13 boats) is 69-87, with Dos being the slow boat in the fleet. They'll be chuckling about that as they go planing off past the displacement boats on the run north.

 

Let it blow, let it snow. Time to get the spring season started!

Way to go Marty, two years in a row!

 

That would be awesome, but I think someone at CYC needs to go over the finish times and compare with inputted elapsed and corrected times. Sachem just beat us (Different Drummer) over the line. Elapsed times on results reflect that. However, Sachem started five minutes behind so should have an elapsed time just over five minutes quicker than us - correct? Scanning over the other elapsed times, methinks there is a problem.

I think you're right. They have the car with 6 minutes less elapsed time than us and they started 10 minutes after we did. So that would have them finishing 4 minutes after us. But they were finishing getting their sails down when we crossed the line if I remember correctly. Maybe the elapsed times were based on everyone starting at the same time? I could believe the car finished 6 minutes in front of us, which would mean their elapsed would be 16 minutes less, not 6 minutes less.

 

The overall results list 7 start times, but their were 9 classes. Maybe that's part of the problem?

Anyone from CYC reading this? I looked over the overall's again and it's pretty obvious that the start times have not been factored in correctly. Class positions will remain the same, overall with change significantly.

I emailed Bill that there is grumbling in the forums. He says a few folks have mentioned it and that they are looking into it. Will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

I'm pretty sure you took it overall with us potentially top five so it will be interesting to see the corrected results. Now, if only we had not screwed up the Asail set right before the 'leeward' mark and rolled you guys! Nice job and congrats.

We should have left the headsail up. The tack line was not attached, which dragged us back enough for you to get away. Game on next week!

Not quite - multi's don't get scored with the mono's!

I've always found it disappointing to win overall only to find a pickle fork scored in the first position...

 

As a pickle forker, I would like to be scored with the monos, and I don't think it would be impossibly unfair. We sail above our rating in heavy air, below our rating in light air. Like a light sports boat, we can light it up if we can get on a plane, and other times we are ordinary. We really might be more similar to the M32, than the M32 is to the Tbird.

Amen to that. As a long time sailer and a handicapper for a number of years the new sports boats create as much of a problem handicapping as the multi's/

VDP and D777 - CSS is scored using PHRF ratings. You guys police your own handicaps and therefore should not be scored. Trying to compare multi's to sport boats is a bit of a stretch as you know that multi's upwind performance in breeze far exceeds a sport boat. I love multi's, but you don't get to play with the mono's using your own ratings! Just a quick search finds the F28R being rated at 15 not the 40 scored (http://www.nemasail.org/pdf/ratings060106.PDF)

This seems to me a very good point. Would you be more willing to consider it if the handicapping were Unified? i.e. If the handicappers were charged with rating the multis fairly againstthe monos? (as much as possible...)

True enough-- but the Melges 32 will kill us up and down in the light.air.

 

No doubt that it is difficult to rate dissimilar boats-- I suppose that a "fair rating" system with widely dissimilar boats leads you to a system where the weather determines who wins, not the relative sailing skill. This is clearly a downside. However, I think it is already a significant part of the game. Look at Martha winning Round the county -- it was a heavy air reach, which perfectly played to her strength. The upside of a unified rating system (at least in theory) would be to encourage participation of the multi fleet in CYC's distance races.

 

It's a small sport, getting smaller, and it seems to me that inclusiveness and informality is the wave of the future-- at least in sailing backwaters like Seattle. Sloop Tavern is leading the way. . .

I've been seeing a number of scoring errors lately. I'm not sure if they're getting fixed in the final scorings or not. The last race I participated in was at Toliva (fun Race) but the scoring had at least two very visible handicap errors and at least one of the top boats not even shown in the overall series scores. I'm thinking that there is such a desire/demand to get scores posted immediately after the last boat finishes and there is such pressure on the Race Committees to do this that these mistakes are bound to happen. Let's take just a little more time and get it right.

Ha! Not to minimize our tactical brilliance--Al is awesome if you haven't sailed with him--but this one was more about luck than boat speed. Drummer had boat speed on us all day, and a better driver to boot. We countered this the only way we could. Divine intervention.

any chance we are going to get more multihulls out for Scatchet Head? are you going to be out again? hope so, I would love to see more "pickle forks" getting out!

why do the multis police their own handicaps? why doesn't PHRF-NW set them like they do for the mono's? what would it take to change this?

Thanks! We had a good time. Lots to see on the race course. Watching Sachem go upwind was a thing of beauty. Watching the two largest kits on the course vaporize in front of us was a crying shame. (I think our bowman actually shed a tear. He had a personal relationship with one of those kites.) Lost our tacking duel with Elusive at the end, they sailed a great race. But the ballsy call was the one Rubicon made. When the guys on Bravo Zulu told me Rubicon finished ahead of them, I knew we were toast. Great race again...

It's also the last time I'll make a joke at breakfast to the Wasabi guys about the wind strength we might see. They were launched!

I guess you're right, the fact there are only a couple of multihulls that enter CSS and they almost always win overall means they are just that much better than the rest of us.

does anyone know what Blue Martini did to get DSQ'd?

 

how much time did Banshee spend sailing upwind to get back to the leeward mark after sailing past it? that didn't help their overall position any and they still did really well!

does anyone know what Blue Martini did to get DSQ'd?

 

how much time did Banshee spend sailing upwind to get back to the leeward mark after sailing past it? that didn't help their overall position any and they still did really well!

Thanks! We had a good time. Lots to see on the race course. Watching Sachem go upwind was a thing of beauty. Watching the two largest kits on the course vaporize in front of us was a crying shame. So can anyone tell us how Wasabi ended up on the beach at Three Tree?

I am curious, but did not want to press the crew for answers at the YC.

 

We also saw Eye Candy motorsailing back, tough day for both crews

They went in too close on the shallow patch - kite up at full speed. Sails spun them up to the heading in the photos. Operator error

We also passed the Farr 30 with only Jib up returning upwind.

 

Looks like they finished. In the photos I saw they had a main at the rounding. Any word on that.

It looked like their halyard broke and then they took their main down.

 

Karma also lost their backstay and then was dismasted on the downwind leg.

Slight correction, we were in the middle of our takedown when we tapped out. Yes, operator error. Huge thanks to Jan and Skip for pulling us off. No one hurt, and no major breakage. Had a nice sail back and got some good speed trialing done. We'll be ready for Southern Straits.

Great race. The planing boats shot off like rocket ships, fun to watch. Downhill end was challenging with a steady stream of boats trying to fit between Wasabi (parked) and the leeward mark just offshore. Thanks to CYC for a great event. And thanks to the wind gods for 3 consecutive big air weekends!
