      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Muskegon Yacht Club

Wednesday we sail PHRF, but their is a new interest in a Melges 24 One- Design. We have six boats at this time with at least 4 more being talked about seriously.

Tuesday Night is Laser/JY 15s

Then the weekend series racing in the spring and fall.

We are also organizing some sunday morning races in the JY's on the off weekends.

Come check us out sometime, we probably have the most competitive PHRF racing on wednesday nights that you will find on the West Michigan Lakeshore.

Youre at SLYC so then you know my scow buddies andy mo, justin and eggy etc...

Live on reeds lake in GR so that's where I sail now, lots of MC Scow and Laser sailing lately, fousing on Laser next year and the DN is ready to go for the winter.

Before that, Mumm 30 (asylum), N/M36 (lunatic fringe) , N/M 50 (Insatiable) and a old IOR N/M 36 (also lunatic fringe) ALL based out of Muskegon YC but with a fair amount of travel. Esp. the Mumm, lots of travel w/ that... huge fun...

3 kids under 6 = dinghy sailing at home for a couple years... but occasionally hop rides on my buddies Farr 395 called Ragged Edge.

Live out near Cannonsburg Ski Area. Only in W. Mich last 2 summers. Most of my sailing has been up north--Charlevoix and Harbor Springs for the last 20 years. Also a few seasons in Chicago right out of school. Used to have a 5-6 race per week habit in college (many years ago). Lately restricted to 3-4 weekend regattas each year due to 2 children under 5 and wife who likes to sail but not race.

Hopefully doing Wed Night PHRF in Muskegon this summer then looking to jump into ownership in 2006.

Anytime anyones up for a beer (my other passion), give me a shout.

1Sailor, do you live on the north side of Reeds Lk? and watch out for that Miller guy, I hear he is trouble.

Sail out of Holland on a boat that has lead in it's butt.

I think that I can hit 1 sailor from my house with a 3 wood if he is who I think he is.

Only if you are true to your alias and bring the liquid barleymalt. (we prefer Old Style since we are diehard Cubbies).

I live on the Ada/Cascade line and sail OPB's.

Catlcall 320 out of Holland (Dys's lead butt boat)

MYC is the place to be... I live in West Olive but hate Holland so I go north to race.

love the J35 racing, but I feel bad we lost Ragtime now it is down to 3 J35's that can have fun. Maybe we will pick up some more with the J35 Nationals in Muskegon this summer. Heard mention of some Local tallent looking into chartering a J35 for the NA's that could be a hoot.

Anyone got any gossip on lead belly boats leaving / arriving ???

OK, personal brews are on the top of the list. My son-in-laws buddies make some of the best. Then micro brews, brew pubs, localized small brewing operations. When we finally get down the line to commercially brewed stuff...........

Looper, K'zoo is in. Pretty much anything west of US 23 is considered WM.

Live in Grandville, race a J/35 in Muskegon, although kids, wife, etc. starting to take yet another hobby. Trying to decide if I should give the J/35 one more year or start racing the VSK3 that I picked up over xmas.

Maybe each J/35 crew should split in two and get a couple Melges to race, that would increase the numbers in a hurry and long delivery's will be via the road.

Fairly new to SA, read it all the time, finally noticed some locals and joined. Good to see beer is still flowing, that is not a hobby I'm ready to give up.

Sailed with Doc on Hoqua for the J35 Lake MIchigan and had a riot. Never even set foot on a J35 before that. Some times it pays to answer the phone.

In the off season, what about gathering at a "suitable" location" to keep "fit" for Wednesday nites?

For the Holland crowd, Wednesday nites at Butches might generate a few interesting jpegs....

I thought P-frog said you were meeting Friday nites @ Butch's. And by the way, this Friday just might work out for me at Butch's.

Roger, I gotta talk to you anyway about that OD regatta I hope you are inheireting.

Uncle Fester, I believe the flag is fine, it's still on my wall as my roommate so eloquently posted. Rumor has it the rightful owner is going to let us keep it... good times... good times...

Also, i wouldn't trade sailing on beautiful lake erie for the world. I haven't forgotten my roots, and i plan on returning for another wonderful sailing season. any word on our area picking up IRC? I'd love to know what the Catalina 27 rates...

Well, the water does not have salt in it unless you spill the margarita. The closest islands are about 150 NM north and the boats tend to be leadmines and you will need to go to Southhaven ? or Holland to race.

Other than that, it is a nice area.

We will have a seperate division if we can get a couple more boats. I think 8 will have to be the magic number. I know a lot of the guys in PHRF 2 are ready to see the Melges play their own game. It will be fun either way. If a couple more guys commit we will have our own start, not sure what spot in the order it will come in though.

Ah Ha!! So you confess, you are a east mid-coast dude at heart!! I am working on being a part-time west mid-coast guy. The wife is trying to make me buy a cottage on the west side of the state. She keeps muttering something about the hundreds of thousands of dollars I've spent on &*(^%$ sailboat racing. As far as IRC on Lake Erie?? probably not this year. I am working on my IRC rating for the Mack. It feels like the old MORC days in a way, we are going to weigh boats again. Kinda cool!!

Take care of them flags boys, You have been doing them justice so far!!

How is it evenly remotely possible that you "punched out" of WMU? WMU will give a PhD to a trained monkey if they put in the time (I should know). :P

Also, if you sailed with Dickie at Red Fox last year, I was on the other Bene.

West of US23 is west Michigan??????

Well, I live east of US23 (Plymouth) but race west of US23 (Ann Arbor) and I don't think I am anything close to a west michigan sailor.....

If I ever get back on my big boat ride on Lk. St Stupid (Victrix), I'll have to look you guys up when we make it up to Harbor Springs (or either of the Macs).

So, it's an easy question, really.... are we 'in' or are we 'out' of the 'you-know-what-race'......

You do know, it's not always about the best gear, but rather the friendships that were formed on the previous 'you-know-what-race' that really counts.

Do you want to win, or watch someone else win... that may be the best question.

C'mon giddy'up - need answer so I can find new person, if need-be. Kurt is asking, and I'm always known for prior proper planning.... like to nail down the crew well in advance.

Answer?

I'm a Kzoo'er and sail out of South Haven.  Sounds like we have a pretty sizeable group down here as well.  I think we need to organize an outing or two (or several) at Bells.

Pehrst, I relocated to Kzoo due to work and it's actually not too bad.  It takes me 50 minutes to get from my house to the marina in SH.  Not as good as the old 5 min commute, but you take what you can get.

I did a tour in K-zoo, at the prestigous Western Michigan University. I had to punch out though. It was lacking in certain areas. A lot of my friends get thrown out after the first semester.

Swedge--

How is it evenly remotely possible that you "punched out" of WMU? WMU will give a PhD to a trained monkey if they put in the time (I should know). :P

Also, if you sailed with Dickie at Red Fox last year, I was on the other Bene.

Hroth

hroth,

where at WMU do you work?

There appears to be quite a few of us here at SA and we were starting to clog up the where to eat thread, so decided to start this one.

I'm in grand rapids, you? What do you sail ?

I am in Spring Lake. I am dating 3 boats on a regular basis and a couple of weekend mistresses. You?

Eric, is that you?

Yes, it is me (eric w) indeed.

Who are you ?

i sail for WMU, as does my roommate RP.

WMU has a sailing team? Where do you guys sail? Gull Lake?

I work in Kazoo at WMU 3 days a week. Maybe we should grab a Bells on a Thursday after work some time.

Hroth

Yeah, we've got a sailing team ... Yeah, Gull Lake ... Yeah, Bells. Let us know when!

Race a J130 around South Haven occasionally, when we are in town. Cruising boat with a racing problem.

Platu, Shorthand I'll see if Princess of the Pointy end can get away for a night out.

Not racing this winter free's up Thursdays.

Bells has Root Beer for the up tight skipper.

13th is good for me. A little earlier would be better--say 5:30--as I have to get home to GR. Whic unfortunatley limits my intake as well

Can you guys do 5:30? Or 5:00? Or 4:00? ...... Or noon?

Despite the promise of a free tube of lube, I am in for the you-know-what this summer. I will square it with my other offer.

Also, Kashi is that stuff we were drinking on your boat during the Mac last summer.

All-righty then. Now, that's what I'm sayin' when we talk about commitment!

You are on the roster for the you-know-what-race this summer.

I will leave you with this quote:

"Skill and confidence are an unconquered army".

I am happy to know that I will have the skill on the pointy end, and the confident competitor that I have grown to appreciate.

You are the man.

5:30 it is! Will have "earned" red hat on. Funny thing is, it was earned while sailing on someone elses J35 at the Chicago NOOD. Took first!

From The Helm, hope you can make it. Think we can convince that J30 guy to show? Will he be at his Kzoo office that day?

What about the Melges 24 Brain Freeze guys? I know a couple of them are local. I'll contact Mr. Slipknot as well.

I earned my Annapolis NOOD hat by running over three 7-year olds during the award ceremony hat toss. A few too many MG rum things that day.

Just kidding--about the 7 year olds, not the too many rum things.

See you all on the 17th.

Shorthanded,

How you doing on crew this year? I race on the boat that you "earned" your red hat on, and then you preceded to kick our butt the rest of the season.

You mentioned some shirts that were coming our way.

have to get out with you guys one of these days.

Is this TP or BT? Don't forget my humbling experience during the Lake Michigan Championship. I recall seeing a lot of your transom.

As far as crew goes, I have a good core for the big regattas and this year should be a lot better for club races.

I forgot about those shirts. I'd better get on it!

I sailed with the great Dickie.

I couldn't take K-zoo. The town just didn't do it for me. Could have been when my buddy cleaned and bled out a deer while it was hanging in front of our dorms. It could have been when I went to the liquor store and they asked me for my ID. I don't know, but K-Zoo just didn't do it for me. I left Western with 3.8 GPA, it was the easiest school I ever went to since middle school. I am not joking. I spent the 3.8 semester drunk off my ass. When I took my Pysch final I had to cover one eye becuase the bubbles I was supposed to fill in kept on swirling around. Still got an A on it. The class that fucked up my 4.0 was BOWLING. BOWLING!!!!! My average went dow through out the semester, could have been the booze.

Do you remeber the girls on the J-22? DAMN!!!! They had great bodies. Once you got closer to them though.... Well as far as the pulchratude (NORM) went there, they were A-Team. Anyway if you run into them, tell them I will support the kids.

I got tired of Kazoo too, which is why I live in GR. I can understand how a bloody deer would drive you away.

As far as the J-22 girls go, I do remember them--they spent the night on the Bene I was on as they had no other place to sleep apparently. I was safely tucked away in my hotel, but I understand they were up late as some of the other crew were on the boat. They even left their pillows on the boat for us to sniff the next day (just kidding--about the sniffing, not the pillows).
