      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Speed Trial app

95 posts in this topic

Maybe it is buried in another thread, but I'm sort of surprised no one has started a thread on it yet - the Speed Trial app. I'm an iPhone type, so downloaded it and tried it a couple of times. Haven't fully sorted it yet, but seems fun.

^ Bingo. Phone tilt works nicely for steering, cute little thing.

Hopefully there is a little strategy that I'm not yet seeing? Does wind vary in direction or strength during runs at it?

I noticed darker patches on the water, best time for me was 40 seconds (did about 6 runs so far).

Saw someone had clocked a time of 30secs.

Yep, 30.33 secs is the fastest so far. It will be tough to beat, my best is 33.29 after about 10 tries.

There is good wind variation in direction and puffs from run to run, so getting a good roll of the dice matters too.

Tried it several more times, best now is 31.99 and have been in the 32's on many of the latest runs at it.

It's surprisingly nuanced. Very important to just 'feel' your way to keeping the speed up close to 30 knots or more rather than putting too much on essing around chasing puffs. The most promising record breaking runs ended in pitchpoles!

Looking ahead and anticipating the best 'straight line' for the run seems important to a good run too.

'AMERICA'S CUP: SPEED TRIALS' PUTS COMPETITIVE SAILING IN YOUR HANDS

POSTED ON 09 APRIL 2012

An exciting new game with exceptional virtual-reality graphics is now available, free, as an app for the iPhone and iPad. Gamers and America's Cup fans, even those with no sailing experience, can test themselves against the best sailors and the fastest boats in the world.

The game is now live in the Apple App Store and is available free for downloading to iPhones and iPads. An Android version for phones and tablets will be released in the coming weeks.

Players test their skills by steering a wing-sailed AC45, attempting to set the fastest time across an AC500 Speed Trial course. Optimal steering through the wind on the race course leads to a top placing, while mistakes are punished by loss of time, with big errors resulting in a capsize.

The game was created with developer Many Players of France, and is based on the sophisticated performance prediction program used by the current America's Cup champions ORACLE Racing (USA).

America's Cup sailors are already playing. Troy Tindill of Team Korea posted on his Facebook page on Sunday, 'Trying to get Nathan Outteridge (the team skipper) off the new America's Cup speed trial app to go and do the real thing!'

The fastest time set so far at an America's Cup World Series regatta over the AC500 Speed Trial course is 36.17 seconds by ORACLE Racing Bundock, an average speed of 26.87 knots (30mph/49kph).

After downloading the game, virtual skippers choose their favorite team from the America's Cup World Series competitors – Artemis Racing (Sweden); China Team (China); Emirates Team New Zealand (New Zealand); Energy Team (France); Luna Rossa Challenge (Italy); ORACLE Racing (USA); and Team Korea (Korea) – and then compete for the fastest time posted by the best virtual sailors in the world.

"The new game is awesome," posted ORACLE Racing CEO Russell Coutts on his Facebook page over the Easter weekend. "It's a lot of fun, educational, and it should help to introduce the America's Cup to a new fan base."

Fans can download the game here.

Ah. Good news.

The other good news is them very likely planning to take this 1.0 as a foundation for even sexier apps. I could see eventually racing other boats, be they simulated or real-player, around a course.

I like the ghost boat....I really like the game. The capsize video when I bit the dust was pretty funny.

Nacra F18 (is that you Tony F18?) is rocking the game right now with 30 29. My best score so far is 32 85. Wish the font were a wee bit bigger, but game's a blast.

Damned, my girlfriend tried the app yesterday and on her first attempt made a 32.18 and she does´t even know how to sail.

Now I have her highscore on my iPad and fail to break it.

And to make things even worse she used the Oracle Racing boat, which is now Nr. 1 on my highscore list.

Damned. Damned. Damned. Damned.

Anyone else starting to see the bugs? Like being inadvertently signed out, the speed of the boat not keeping up with the water, time to beat, etc? It's ok, still fun...just a few bugs to work out.

I notice that when I'm on Artemis, there are a lot more fbombs as we go along the track. ph34r.gif

I agree.

The Alinghi one sails on the course at the same time as the challenger, camps on top of their air, and then claims the speed as their own. If the challenger protests, Alinghi has them thrown-out...................................

--

Nathan Outteridge, skipper, Team Korea: I saw that Russell Coutts had posted on Facebook that ‘America’s Cup – Speed Trials’ (the iphone and ipad app) was out, so I had a spare few minutes and downloaded it. I was thinking I haven't had much practice on the real boats, so I'd practice on the game at least. I've got my time down around 31 seconds now, so I've improved about four seconds. I need to get out on the water practicing, but this is the next best thing.

The app is a cool little game. I haven't figured it all out yet, there is probably more to it than meets the eye, and I'd expect constant improvements and updates with it. My best time so far is 31.25.

I see a couple of bugs on occasion, but it's free, so what the heck.

I'd even go so far as to say I'd pay a couple of bucks for additional features, whatever they might be.

And noticed they didn't use the silly checkered flag or even finish line. Whoever wrote the program is paying attention to the larger audience input.

"30:71 (52nd place) :D

Do a little bear-away just as you cross the startline to pick up some speed.

Aggresive steering gets punished quite harshly, dont let speed drop below 30kts.

If at the start you dont see any puffs in the middle of the course dont bother and retry.

The physics and behaviour seem very accurate.

I tried to save myself as the boat started to round up and did so, but both hulls came splashing down and the boat virtually stopped.

What else is slow? The same things that are slow in real life; Over steering, over heeling, light air and of course, capsizing.

What is exciting to me about this app is the idea that this may well just be a starting point. Could we race each other in a fashion similar to SailX with much more real seeming boats along water that reflects something close to the real thing? Obviously the real thing is heaps better, but gotta admit, this virtual app, especially if it's a starting point, is pretty darned cool.

30.60, finding it hard to go any faster. Seems u need the right puffs to go sub 31.

Not a bad app, If they made a app for the whole course it would be awesome.

No question you need the right puffs. You can't break much below 32 without them. If your speed drops into the 28 range for more than 3 seconds, you are looking at a 31.5 or better run. I'm sub 31 now, but not by much. Looks the 29 barrier has yet to be broken.

I like the game but it would be nice if you would have some more control over where you start your run (high or low).

Noticed on the live feed that Intel was on one of the tents over at Naples, new AC sponsor perhaps?

^ Good question. Maybe they altered the characteristics a little? The polars came from Burns at OR, originally. All I've noticed as change so far on iPhone v1.1 is the finish line and the occasional spray on the lens.

I hope the Android version doesn't beat the Iversion consistently...
