      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

A final decision on the exact location of the waypoint will be made in the days leading up to the start.

What a comeback by Puma to nab 2nd. Tele hurt them a little at the start, but I think Groupama was already out there by then. Good race by them.

Great racing today.

I was a bit surprised at G4's speed upwind today.

They usually seem to give away a couple of degrees to Camper but not today.

Granted G4 covered Camper well enough to mess up their day, but still not even a punch thrown.

The wheels are really falling off Tele though.

They sailed so well early on in this race; it's a bit sad seeing them blow it this badly.

Yeah, when Tele shrimped that kite the commentators noted that they had to save that one as there are no more. Unless you can go back to an old one if you had to.

I believe there was mention of Tele having used all her sail cards when they got to Miami on one of the round up videos from Volvo. So yes, saving the shrimped kite and avoiding further damage to it was important to them. With regards to using an older kite, sure they could, but hours/damage on it would have prompted them into using the card to bring a newer sail into use anyway. The crew seemed to be having a real struggle to get full hoist on the halyard, the boat took off downwind with the kite still shy of the top of the mast, the boys still winding on the handles, likely the halyard snapped and it started raining blue cloth.

 

Sanya also had the kite issue, where the lock wouldn't release, so the bowman went to trip it from the local release at the masthead...it looked like there was a larger problem, hence the soft shackle on the halyard getting opened and the sail falling into the water, they opted for a chaseboat drop. I'd imagine they still have sail cards to spare after the couple of shipping legs they've done!

 

Great work by Kenny and the boys on Puma to choose the less favoured mark and steal a heap of distance back on Camper, actually rounding second behind Groupama, the commentators didn't pick up on it with the live feed. Only Mark Covill noticed towards the 3rd mark. Interestingly, Puma now lead the points scored in In-Port Racing.

 

The French were on fire today, no doubt and made it count, firming their grip on the top spot.

 

Clifford and Abu Hamble had their moments, but failed to shine.

Oh well here we go again , Groupama for this leg and Telefonica for the last leg.

 

...methinks the big questionfrom here in is wether Tele's got -any- fight left at all??

...will they hold-off the shoe-sailsmen for 3rd overall?!?

I agree that Camper's main has issues. I noticed they were sporting an inverted top batten for quite a while going up wind on leg two.

Dunno about sail cards - this is a frustration with vor this info should be public info.

Im sure ken read said that they built two mains, one inshore and one off. Plus he commented on the weight of materials used and that camper seemed to go very light.

Great start by KR, he 'wung' it.

 

KR said that the jib they were flying was new in Miami, with the zippers in it. Saw the tracker was not on earlier, good to hear that it is up now.

 

From the way Puma snuck-in yesterday and Abu Dahbi sneaking-up from that terrible start today, it appears some are watching each other too much and not the big picture. You had Tele in the back yesterday and now Group out back today. They're leaving the door open for Puma and Camper.

How the hell does Telephonica sail up to and past Puma? Looks to me like more attention to lifts and taking those lifts. 1.2 NM can make all the difference in the end. Go Puma!

Tele is on fire and the three Juan K boats are as usual faster than the others on that angle. I'm a bit surprised to see G4 held back like that. I hope it won't last!

I think those three, Tele, Puma, and Groupa will stay pretty close to each other as they approach the light winds at the Azores.

Pumas may be sailing an angle that she is not optimized for vs Tele but they do not want to lose touch with the other two prior to getting to the light stuff.

Just a guess.

Puma is for sale because the VOR is nearly over. What would they do with an old boat? Of course, the real question is what would anyone do with these boats given that the V70 rule is likely dead, dead, dead?

I'm surprised by Tele's speed.

Going by the previous leg performance I think if the wind gets up any more then it favours G4, who are maintaining the easterly distance to Tele but getting to the right side of the course at the moment - good move.

It may be case that Tele did some good homework in Lisbon though (and they were hampered toward the end of the last leg by the dagger board issue).

I'm a bit surprised the Puma has been just slightly slower. It'll be interesting to see if Puma and G4 can tune up against each other now that they are so close; it might be good for both of them.

None of them can afford a boat between them and their immediate competitor on the points table so I think they will all stay pretty close; Puma might be the wildcard.

Note that the boat is for sale in Euros.

I don't think Kenny see much of a market for it in the US right now.

Sanderson should ask for a 'test drive' - say Lorient to Galway? ;)

On the live tracker, Groupama has passed Puma. Have they finally stretched ther legs and are starting to accelerate? Or maybe G4 night watch wasn't any good.

They are sailing at 85° to the wind, an angle which should be good for G4.

I think it is good conditions for G4 (could be 2-4kts more wind) but Tele have pulled a rabbit from the hat and are still extending at the front.

I also have a theory that G4 suffers when loaded (first day or two out of Itajai) but really hits it's straps when lightened a bit.

Nice low side overtake from G4 on Puma - fake right, go left.

I wonder if Puma are missing exactly the right sail for these conditions but will be carrying an extra option for the run home?

GP passed Puma based on pure speed, I assume the guys onboard are really pushing hard (hopefully not too hard)

 

not sure tele is extending lead.

 

Nobody have any idea about the question of sails (who is missing one or who have a spare one?)

 

Anyway I like to see that in Lorient the french boats will be on the water!! I would love to be but I will miss them by a day ... Arrrgh!:angry:

You reckon they won't tack. I don't think so. Abu have not got the boat to do it. Left or right of the Azores high. I think that will determin this leg. The only time they would not tack is to go round the Azores high ,more miles and more breeze on the other side Still we shall see in the next 48 hours.

No, not stale at all, and thanks for asking. The Deppe one and the Robert Hopkins one (PUMA) are the best, they are both sitting with a friend being edited since I hate editing and have no time. But coming soon and both will be on the front page!

Same thing they do with them now: Mackinac Race, St. Maarten Heineken, Sydney-Hobart, corporate hospitality, etc. Only one old boat is sailing the VOR despite 20-something VO70s in existence - the rest are either at the bottom of the ocean or doing something else.

Iker Martinez just knows how to fine-tune Tele. And Telephonica isn't the slowest ship of course. Iker M is a very talented guy (Olympic Champion and world champion 49-er. Here is the wiki:

Too bad for Frank Gammas.. Otherwise G4 would have won for sure.

But the race is on.... At the moment G4 only 2.3 Nm behind Tele.

And they are entering the highpressure zone of the Azorres.

I bet Frank Gammas is better in "playing with currents"

 

I am still very much in favor of Frank Gammas winning the VOR.

Looking at the forecast on the tracker around +15 +20, looks like the place to be will be right on the south coast of the island, anybody with better analysis and data ?

This is the first time I've believed the "Clifford is a dog" theory. Then again, Puma must be a dog too, or, then again, at this stage in the race, alot of other things could be going on. Wrong sail combo, tired sails, repairs made the boat heavy, etc..

G4 have definitely picked up their game since the sun came up.

 

They need some wind to be really fast, that's because their keel bulb is further af than the others.

Why this video is called "Sail" is beyond me...I think its pretty dang whacky but the ending/parrallel is there. The Telies/Groupama's and the rest trying to rain in on their parade. I hope Puma/ABU/Camper can make it interesting.

Interrogé par Ouest-France, Franck Cammas, insatiable et avide de nouveaux défis, se verrait bien taquiner la vague en 2016 au Brésil. «J'aime bien les trucs comme ça (les JO),  a-t-il ainsi affirmé. Je m'y verrais bien, en catamaran. Ça m'exciterait bien». Une idée qui trotte dans la tête du skipper depuis quelques temps déjà et ce challenge n'aurait finalement rien d'un rendez-vous en mer inconnu pour celui qui a déjà été sacré vice-champion du monde de F18 (catamaran de 5.50m).

 

Après avoir été aux commandes d'un géant des mers sur la dernière Route du Rhum ou encore lors du Trophée Jules-Verne conquis en 2010 (avant de repartir dans l'escarcelle de Loïck Peyron à la barre de Banque Populaire, ndlr), la voile légère serait néanmoins un vrai changement pour Franck Cammas qui a besoin de trouver l'équipe idéale avant de se jeter à l'eau mais il ne manque pas de motivation : «si on s'entend bien, qu'on est efficaces, performants, il faudra y aller !» En attendant, le skipper français a le temps de se faire la main sur les parcours côtiers de la Volvo Ocean Race qu'il qualifie «d'excellent entraînement pour les JO !» (Avec AFP)

I think he is to the contrary a rather athletic guy. Among others http://www.cammas-gr..._equipe_112.jsp

He's the classic little Frenchman who are perfect for driving those little boats they excel in. He looks athletic enough and his multihull reflexes would be a big benefit on the little cats.

 

And he's smart and competitive as hell.

I read that Frank next challenge might be the 2016 Olympic on F18 , if you are in Lorient ,could you check on that?

 

 

I highly doubt that, he never did light sailboat sailing in competition to my knowledge.

In fact really atypical :

- he is from the med (sailors more from the Atlantic/britanny in France)

- started competition quite late, but very quickly at top level

- also not hyper athletic

 

Ride a road bike with him for a while and come back and say that! He is an incredibly fir bloke- remember that when he took the big multi across the Atlantic he was using a bike as the primary grinder.

I think he races the boats round the Isle of Wight on his bike with mark Turner every year too- and generally they beat them.

yep F17 sorry, I also read that after the VOR he will go on the MOD70 "race for water" and has also the idea to sail with the swiss C class cat "Hydro"

 

The good thing is that when he was puching forward the next project he nevertheless achieved the race under progress : During the jules vernes he was talking Route du Rhum with Coville ; while solo duriing the Rhum, the VOR campaign was already launched and running. Hopefully this time too, it will give him some luck to have other project after this VOR ;)

 

 

 

Now lets see if the night shift will do the job against Telephonica. Go go guys, I know french primary schools boys and girls already on their way to Lorient to see the green boat!

Did Puma load enough stores for the Auckland to Itajai leg or what? Geez, seems like there should be no way for Tele and Group to just blow by them like they're sitting still.

If Clifford is soooo bad on a beam reach why wouldnt they take the direct route and sail the shortest distance whilst sailing closer to their preferred angles (high to start with and low closer to the Azores). Im not talking massive differences but even a slight angle difference would have yielded a much shorter distance. Is the drop in speed really that great, seems to me they have sailed the longest course at the slowest angle (comparitively). Only my thoughts, flame on.

over distance covered,,there's a ~3/4% difference happening,,,not insignificant,,,but not overwhelming either ;)

It looks like we're heading back in to Tele range at the moment.

Nico said he yesterday he was aiming for a deficit of~20nm at the turn.

I think he'll need some good Camper conditions before the turn to make that happen.

The rubber band is slowly pulling everyone back together again.

The predictor shows 1.5nm between 1st and 3rd into Lorient; I forsee a lot of tired boys if that's the case.

Tony Mutter talked about normal 3 man watched to the turning mark and then more bodies on deck after that.

I wouldn't be surprised if the the power on deck hasn't already been increased given that the conditions are lightening and are probably a bit fluky.

I hope they've all got enough food to keep everyone awake.

Franck has stated that their position in the standings is above anything they hoped and planned for.

I'm not sure how true this is, but if we assume he's telling the truth and that his aim may have been a little more modest.

If overall victory wasn't his target then winning into his home port would definitely have to be.

I wonder if the design optimisation of G4 is planned around winning this leg over all others?

Computed from previous legs tracker data ? And same for all boats (average) or one for each ?

Yes it makes sense ! added to the fact that the Nacra will be a mixed-crew boat and ... that one can see Cammas racing cats locally with his girl-friend, a double windsurfing world-champion.

G4 and tele in the lighter wind now and tele in front again by a few hundred yards, but the strong downwind in front of them to finish the leg is favourable to G4 I think.

Plus, this leg is, proportionally with boat size and speeds, very "figaro" style, and G4 has some experience in this kind of racing.

On the other side GPMA has said that they have more to loose than others from a breakage, so they might want to risk less if/when things get real hard.

That's too close to measure using the ruler, and TF seems to want to put GPMA in their dirty air!

 

Btw, are they using COLREGS or the RRS at sea?

 

EDIT: Because you can't really luff if using COLREGS.

Franck's live interview on the Groupama website just finished.

I didn't watch the whole interview but there's certainly not much stress on that boat from what I can see.

During the interview the stack was shifted forward; they have one driver at the back and 2 others hanging out on the foredeck (playing cards or something ;)).
