How To Watch America's Cup On Youtube Regardless of Restrictions

Recommended Posts

Updated 2013-08-06:

If you want to pretend to be in NZ (haven't tried it yet, but it sounds good - a big thanks to the paradox of thrift):

1. Get firefox browser
2. Download the add-on 'Modify Headers'
3. Once this is installed open the Modify Headers preferences
4. Choose 'Add', name 'X-Forwarded-For' and then add a proxy value in the value field.
5. You can get NZ proxy values at this link: http://www.proxynova.com/proxy-server-list/country-nz/ (all you need is an IP address in the value field)

6. As long as the Modify Headers add-on is running you will appear to be in NZ.

You can use the same add-on to change your IP address to a proxy in any other country.

Proxies/VPN

I tried these:

Stealthy addon for Firefox and Chrome
ProxTube addon for Firefox and Chrome (website in German)

http://www.expatshield.com/ (gives you a UK IP address)
http://www.usaip.eu/en/free_vpn.php (rather unstable)
http://www.hidemyass.com/

Will try this:

Media Hint addon for Firefox/Chrome

Never tried those:

ProxMate addon for Firefox and Chrome

http://www.privoxy.org/
https://www.torproject.org/
https://www.vpnreactor.com/
http://www.hide-ip-address.net/
http://www.privateproxysoftware.com/anonymous_proxy_personal.html
http://www.hide-my-ip.com/
http://hola.org/
http://netscop.net/ (French website)

Other services - sports streaming

Just in (NBC of course USA only):

NBC ramps up America’s Cup coverage in the United States
The America's Cup is returning to network television in the United States for the first time in over 20 years with NBC.
Coverage begins with Semifinal races 3 and 4 of the Louis Vuitton Cup, the America's Cup Challenger Series, on August 9 and 10 which will be shown tape delayed on the NBC Sports Network.
In the United States, all races covered by NBC / NBC Sports Network will be replayed on YouTube immediately following the television broadcast (internationally the America’s Cup YouTube channel will continue to have live coverage subject to territorial rights restrictions).
Veteran announcer Todd Harris will serve as the play-by-play commentator for the NBC Sports Network telecasts. Harris will be joined by former America’s Cup helmsman and Volvo Ocean Race skipper Ken Read, as well as America's Cup winner and author Gary Jobson.
Louis Vuitton Cup Semifinals
August 9 - Race 3 - NBC Sports Network - 7:00pm ET (tape delayed)
August 10 - Race 4 - NBC Sports Network - 6:00pm ET (tape delayed)
Louis Vuitton Cup Finals
August 17 - Races 1+2 - NBC Sports Network - 6:00pm ET (tape delayed)
August 18 - Races 3+4 - NBC Sports Network - 6:00pm ET (tape delayed)
August 21 - Races 5+6 - YouTube.com/americascup - 4:00pm ET (live)
August 24 - Races 7+8 - NBC Sports Network - 7:00pm ET (tape delayed)
August 25 - Races 9+10 - NBC Sports Network - 7:00pm ET (tape delayed / if necessary)
August 28 - Races 11+12 - NBC Sports Network - 5:00pm ET (tape delayed / if necessary)
August 30 - Races 13 - NBC Sports Network - 5:00pm ET (tape delayed / if necessary)
During the 2013 America's Cup Finals, coverage switches to the main NBC network for the first two days before reverting to the NBC Sports Network, with live broadcasting of all races.
America's Cup Finals
September 7 - Races 1+2 - NBC - 4:00pm ET
September 8 - Races 3+4 - NBC - 4:00pm ET
September 10 - Races 5+6 – NBC Sports Network - 3:30pm ET
September 12 - Races 7+8 – NBC Sports Network - 3:30pm ET
September 14 - Races 9+10 - NBC Sports Network - 3:30pm ET
September 15 - Races 11+12 - NBC Sports Network - 3:30pm ET (if necessary)
September 17 - Races 13+14 - NBC Sports Network - 3:30pm ET (if necessary)
September 19 - Races 15+16 - NBC Sports Network- 3:30pm ET (if necessary)
September 21 - Races 17 - NBC Sports Network - 3:30pm ET (if necessary)
The America's Cup Finals will also be streamed live on nbcsports.com. Replays will be available on the America’s Cup YouTube channel immediately following the broadcast.
Locally, in the San Francisco Bay Area, all racing from Louis Vuitton Cup Semifinals through the America's Cup Finals will be shown live on NBC affiliate KNTV (or COZI TV).
Internationally, racing is being shown in over 165 territories, across over 30 networks including, Fox Sports (Australia), TVNZ (New Zealand), TV4 (Sweden), Canal+ (France), TVE (Spain), Sportsnet (Canada), and ESPN International (Central/South America, Caribbean), to name a few. Live racing is available worldwide on Youtube.com/americascup subject to territorial rights restrictions.

Does this mean that with the delayed broadcasts you guys will watch the races later than the rest of the world (if you don't use a proxy for watching YouTube in real time)?

This information is apparently not correct for the bay area.

Comcast's guide shows 1PM PDT KNTV cable 3 (703 for HD) for today, Wednesday, and Friday. DVR engaged!!!

My bad, I missed this line:

Although I don't think they're on COZI anymore.

The last series (RR) was on Comcast channel 168. I only have the basic service and it worked for me.

Comcast in the Seattle area has Yachting at 1pm on CSNHD (ch 617 for me). The description talks about LV racing in 2007 and that may be accurate but there's a small chance it will be from SF.

If you use the Comcast on-screen menu and search 'Yachting' there are a bunch of shows this week, all AC-related, across various channels. Have not yet found one that specifically says Live from SF for today at 1pm, but there are plenty of replays later in the day.

I believe you mean 186, that's COZI and that broadcast has moved to NBC (KNTV ch 3, SD or ch 703 HD).

The info in the Comcast/Xfinity guide says that it's a rerun of the 2007 Valencia LV cup, but that's probably a mistake.

KNTV/COZI/NBC is virtual channel 11.2 or transmitter channel 12.4 if you have an over-the-air digital receiver.

Will you be watching? Or just moaning about the lack of a free internet broadcast?

Just upgraded my DirecTV package so I get NBC Sports.

Hope the HD looks as good as the youtube live stream.

For those on Comcast in the Seattle area: Today's race will not be broadcast Live. It will be shown at 1500 on NBCSP (Ch 34 for me) and on NBCSP HD (626)

How did you get that to work? I have tried all the free proxy servers listed here and verified that my IP changed, but when I try to look at the video I still get the message saying I'm not allowed to see it in my area...

This is going to suck come Saturday...

We seem to have NBC Sports HD on my FiOS, and at 6:00PM Eastern the online guide lists "Yachting." Perhaps you should search for that. I'm still trying to watch it in real time, but so far no luck.

Will TVNZ / OneNews have a link on their homepage to stream the video for a live race? The US commentary is not ideal and I'd much prefer to listen to the NZ commentary team.

The "thanks" goes out to he paradox of thrift.

Great that it works for you, it doesn't for me  . But I have YT access, and if KR is commentating, I'll be fine.

Looking forward to this evening.

From in the US and using Firefox (probably Chrome etc too) - In case this helps anyone else:

Tried accessing today's races from in the US using the Proxmate add-on for FireFox and had to change the proxy url and the port.

Today this one (from Germany) works: URL: 178.76.129.69 Port: 8080 There is a proxy list for other countries at: http://hidemyass.com/proxy-list/

To install Proxmate:

Tools->Add-ons->Get Add-ons

Search for Proxmate

Install

Once installed:

Tools->Add-ons->Proxmate->Enable

Tools->Add-ons->Proxmate->Options (set as above)

You may need to restart the browser.

2wgwuog.jpg

Press Options above and you get the below. Fill in the URL and Port.

anzasi.jpg

note that it has '&proxmate=us' appended to the end.

I just had a losing battle with Youtube and Viper VPN. Apparently youtube is smart enough to get around viper VPN... Still fighting it, but the Stingray trick seems to be working. I have the countdown. Yesterday, I got through the countdown and then it said the show is not available in my country. I'm not sure how I finally got it to work...

What a PITA...

is the germany IP working for anyone today?

I am using the same IP address as yesterday (see Stingray's post above) and it is working fine. Remember to add "&proxmate=us" to the end of the web address - it took me a while to figure this out. Others may not be as stupid as me but, in case they are, the link for today's races using proximate is:

Just a quick word of caution, yesterday I watched the countdown for about 30 minutes, then came up the LV picture above for a while, then it suddenly said that I could not watch it in my country. I'm not sure how I finally got around it. Today, I have it streaming in Firefox using the Stingray method and in Chrome using a commercial VPN. If they both work I'll drop one or the other, but just be prepared to reload a few times right at the beginning of coverage.

i think i got it... does it just have "Please stand by." in the video window right now? I thought they usually have a countdown (maybe not activated properly because of the race schedule change)?

Something I discovered yesterday - when you're using Stealthy in Chrome you only need the proxy on when you first connect to the YT stream, after which you can turn it off again for the remainder of the race. It dramatically improved the quality of the stream for me.

Jobson sounds like an annoying professor, he is commentating for a non-sailing audience that knows absolutely nothing about sailing, or the ACWS... it is irritating, as when he just said "See that thing? That's a daggerboard!"

ARRRGH... where's Mitch!?!?

Or when he said stadium sailing has never been seen before. Lying douche. I'm sure the guys at Extreme loved that. Not cool. Someone put him out to pasture.

Listen to Jobson and then listen to a clip from Donald Trump. They sound like twins, and just as idiotic. #SeparatedatBirth?

Yes the mobile app works, just click Video then Live. Had mine on the whole time, it could not possibly get any simpler.

Lots of tricks above work for web browsers too, some of them just a few clicks and off you go.

In all cases I am connected to WiFi. The mobile app ~may~ not work using cell speeds.

just curious Mr. Stingray; your screenshot shows the "use your own proxy" box unchecked. i think that would mean that the ip and port that you are pasting in would not be active, leaving proxmate to do whatever it does in default mode.

It does work to check that box and pump in an "elite" ip and port found at proxynova.com until one works.

the AC youtube page doesn't seem to list the live events for me, but clicking on the cup icon on the left takes me to a page that does show the live feed. clicking that link seems to start up proxmate which gives sweet success with a lucky ip.

also i have updated proxmate 3 times already.

it's the americas cup of fussing with youtube, but i do enjoy watching those boats sail.

That's a great tip. Thank you.

It lead me to look at what Proxmate does, presumably (hopefully) for only when you do not check that box. Here's what it does to mine (was not checking the box), the value that gets inserted is NOT pretty and I also have to do a Tools->Reset later to restore to my usual proxy settings.

If you buy a one month subscription to an application called Hotspot Shield http://www.hotspotshield.com/trial/ which will cost you $5 for a month or $29 for a year, and then set your location to Australia (or somewhere else where the coverage is not blocked) you can watch the blocked content. It is a little tricky to get running, but once you have worked it out - it works fine - a little too well as it will do the reverse on any other location restricted content, and will block that for you. I gave up trying to fiddle with add-ons and finding that they were working ,and then not. You have to buy the sub as opposed to running the free version as the subbed version gives you a choice of five world locations. Your licence works across five machines, but I only have it set up permanently on one.

Am i understanding correctly that in the US, NBC will be broadcasting R1-2. Then NBC Sports R3 on.

And Youtube will not show any live action?

So to watch R3 on live without NBCS you will need to deal with one of the Proxy setups?

May have been addressed by get a VPN like www.privateinternetaccess.com - you logon, you then "pop out" on the internet from the country of your choice and can stream content without restriction.

If you travel a lot or use public wifi, you should get a vpn account anyway just to encrypt your wifi traffic. Lifehacker had a good post about this.
