      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Looking at all the pix it appears the committee boat/mark boat was backing down pretty hard.

 

In the big shot, through the smoked glass of the wheelhouse, is that someone doing a runner off the foredeck?

Yes, there was a photographer on the bow who must have gotten some great shots. He hung in there until the last second and that's him ducking for cover.

You could say they caught a good buzz on the RC boat after Deano got flying high but with the rudder damage everything for the shore crew took a sudden turn for the worse :)

 

Is the chrome on the comm boat bent in that first shot?

Treated as a somewhat ho-hum incident in the latest AC news release.

 

During Tuesday’s practice session, Emirates Team New Zealand had a collision with one of the mark boats in gusty conditions late in the afternoon. The initial assessment is that both boats suffered minor damage, with nothing serious enough to keep the Kiwis from racing on Thursday.

Wow, good sequence there!

 

Lots of whitecaps, they may have been hit by a strong shift. edit: yep, 'gusty conditions' like in KJ's post above .. still, Deano, Jeez!

Going by the sequence, it looks like the mark boat was going forward initially then stopped.

Emirates Team New Zealand

 

It has been a good week of training in Newport since the sailing team arrived last week. The team raced without trimmer James Dagg though today who received a knock to the head and was taken to a doctor to be checked. James had come into contact with tactician Ray Davies’ elbow during a manoeuvre. Doctors cleared him to sail tomorrow. Then at the end of the third race the boat was damaged when it came into collision with a mark boat.

Barker says he had to luff to avoid a couple of spectator boats and lifted a hull to avoid the official boat. A collision could not be avoided and the port hull of the AC45 came into contact with the mark boat’s rail. “It probably looked more spectacular than it was. No one was hurt and neither boat suffered serious damage”

The Ac45’s under-rigging and the port rudder were damaged and will be repaired overnight. Barker says the AC45 will be back on the water tomorrow.

Incredible shots. A testament to the ruggedness of AC45s and Deano's driving.

 

Pix show they clipped the railings on both sides of the mark boat, coming and going. Still trying to figure out what happened with the mast support strut under the boat.

 

Edit -- It appears they wiped off all the underboat support stays.

If Newport cannot control spectator boats we have a problem.

 

Also, local boaters there should think about what they are doing.

Let's get this cleared up - the 'Louis Vuitton' boats (there are two) are 'Pay per View' (pa$enger carrying) Mark Boats. The 'committee' boat (below) was not hit, (and does not carry extraneous personnel - not after Valencia!ohmy.gif)

Carlo Borlenghi must have been in one of the boats in the background at the right, when he shot this one. Hard to tell just how necessary it was to swerve quite that hard.. but it's a good story :)

Or else they may be using a spare, perhaps even from one of the spare boats. Should be able to tell after today's photos, especially if the Buzy Bee is missing.

The hit on the bow might have been from the dolphin striker or the beam. Lucky they weren't on soft sails, as the king post under the mast (which would be much more loaded than with a wing) would have gone and the front beam would have folded.

 

BTW, I call BS on luffing to avoid spectators, they just got hit by a puff.

And I'll take what he said.....

.............Unfortunately on the sail in things really went badly for us. We had to avoid some spectator boats and as we headed up to avoid them went into a big hull fly which I was certain going to result in a capsize. As we rounded up the boat decided not to go all the way over but unfortunately one of the Race Committee mark boats who was heading in found themselves on a collision course with us. We managed to fly our windward hull over their bow and hit them with both the King post and under rigging which broke, and then damaging our windward rudder on their bow railing. Things could have been a whole lot worse but thanks to the good work of our shore crew the boat is already back in one piece and ready to go again tomorrow.

 

The one lesson from today is that you need to have respect for these boats at all times. The minute you relax or lose concentration things can happen so quickly. And none too timely a lesson either with the 72 not too far away.

^ Yep, the more you think about it, the scarier that incident was.

 

GMR was lucky to see it coming in time, and lucky to have an escape path; those inside the cabin are lucky the blade didn't go right through their windshield; and if the heel angle had been just fractionally less then those on board the 45, some of them already clinging precariously because of the almost-broach, might have had a very serious impact onto who-knows-what as a really big collision happened.

 

Am now thinking that DB took a calculated risk when he anticipated the larger of those nearby spec boats moving into his path, maybe over-reacted slightly, but he came damn close to making it cleanly. And, amazingly, nobody got hurt. Whew!

those things are far too powered up to be sailing in close proximity to

 

pleasure craft that may or may not be even looking occasionally in their direction

 

from deano's comment it appear there was a moment at the very start of the gust?

 

where they may have been able to steer out of a collision

 

but they were winding down and missed that window

 

then the choices seem to have been

 

1. let the gust lay the boat over and probably damage the wing and have crew falling etc

 

or

 

2. try to fly over the incoming marker boat and hope nothing hits

 

no brakes on over-powered cats that can crack 30knots

 

they need space

 

or skill and predictable traffic movements

Yep, they need space. If you look at the various photos and amateur vids out there from yesterday, you'll see close encounters with powered up AC45's; complete with audible gasps from those on board boats that experienced close-by's.

Agreed ... GMR is one of the AC nice-guys.

 

I am glad he got out of the way.

 

But I still think control of "spectator" (and other) boats on the race course is an issue.
