      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

Those negative, verb-based, adjectives or whatever they are: insatiable, indomitable, inevitable, irrepressible, have gotten way out of hand. Inconceivable is good and to it I'd add: indigestible, irreparable, and intestinal.

A certain sail maker in Melbourne raced a Farr 5000 on the Kinnears trailerable yacht circuit a long time ago.

A very small boat, the apt name was 'Farr Call'

Depending on your musical taste and whether or not you are a Marshall Crenshaw fan:

081912_h33_sml.jpg

Even without the musical reference, I think the names works. (Think PHRF ratings etc.)

If you don't like the name, you can always rename her after you buy the boat. SA AD

At Airlie beach race week was a 27 footer called "ya mum". Each morning we waited as the skipper called RC with "we have 5 on "ya mum" and calls through the race of "we are climbing on top of ya mum," etc. I thought it was amusing, but then I should get out more!

This shit simply has to stop!!!

I hate, absolutely detest, boat names consisting of puns. I don't really mind names that are from classic songs though. And a few of my friends have boats named after Grateful Dead songs -- as far as I can tell, there is about a 100% chance of the owner being a great guy if his boat's named after a Dead tune! I'm not a particularly big fan of the GD. It's just one of those correlations I have noticed.

Anyone who's boat is name Knot Again, or For Sail (or Fore Sail), Scratching Bottom, Wind Dancer, etc. etc. ... it's practically guaranteed that the owner will annoy the piss out me (unless, I suppose, that was simply the name when they bought it).

A cute boat name is a little bit like having a Lynrd Skynrd quote in your HS yearbook. It seemed like a good idea at the time but years later, odds are it's become positively cringe-worthy.

I thought " One Time At Band Camp" was maybe in poor taste. But you are supposed to blow into flutes so you probably wouldn't need to get that far.

Just "Band Camp", kind of like that one.

From Messing About in Sailboats

Really Stupid Boat Names

A few weeks ago, I asked for submissions for the Stupidest Boat Names and I was not disappointed. These are beauties. Thank You! This would not of course had been possible without the support of the awesome Scuttlebutt.

I have tried to categorize them and they have been unscientifically grouped in a totally subjective way that made sense to me after a few beers. I haven't figured my 3 favorites yet but when I do the submitters get CDs of the Top 10 Sailing Songs.

The original list, culled from several web sites, is in the extended posts. If you have any other names to suggest, I will happily add them. Here they are:

"Runs With Scissors"

"Support the Right to Arm Bears "

There was a yacht at the Arun Yacht Club called "Passing Wind." About 10 miles to the west is the Looe Passage, around SDelsey Bill, West Sussex. A crew member was hit by the boom, and the owner called out the coastguard. "What is your name and position?" "We are Passing Wind, in the Looe"

Top 10 Stupid Boat Names

A while ago, I came across the Top 10 Boat Names according to Boat US. Many of them are plain stupid, not least the #1 boat name, Aquaholic. Pu-lease!

In doing a bit of digging around, I found some other dumb names for a boat. Panbo had some great ones like the one pictured here. Imagine calling Mayday on your VHF in this boat.

Bernie Ebbers, the jailed former CEO of Worldcom's yacht was called Aquasition. He deserved time for that alone.

I thought it might be a good wide to come up with the top 10 Stupidest Boat names.

Here are some other beauties I found pecking around:

- a Little Nauti

- Adoryble (On a Cape Dory Typhoon)

- All Gulls and No Buoys

- All my Ex's (on a stinkpot so had it coming)

- Bad Atti-toad

- Bada-bing-bada boom (another aquamoron)

- Banker's Hours

- Bay Bay

- Baysic Necessity

- Beaverlicious (hmm! interesting)

- Beer Bait n 'Ammo

- Bezerker (a little scary as it was on a Hallberg Rassy)

- Better Knot

- Between the Sheets

- Big E Nuf (amazingly this was a sailboat. Probably motored a lot)

- Bikini Bottom

- Bimini Cricket

- Bite Me (on a fishing boat)

- Knotty Boys (at least it wasn't knotty buoys)

- Messing About (what an excellent name for a boat)

- Gravyboat

- Bottoms Up

- Boat-acious

- Buoys in the Hood

- Learning Curve (written upside down on a sailboat)

- Sea-duction

- Sea ya

- Loon-a-sea

- Cur-n-Sea

- SeaRenity

- Tip Sea

- Seanile

- X2Sea

- LegaSea

- Itza -Du-Zea (Oyvay)

- Tax Seavation

- Slipless in Seattle (now that's clever)

- Feelin Nauti (I bet you are)

- Nauti Girl

- Nauti & Nice

- Reel Nauti

- Nauti Nurses (I think most of the Eastern Fleet would show up if they ran into trouble)

- Nauti Intentions (OK now I am going to throw up)

Ok, who ever came up with "Shoot Low They're Riding Chickens" deserves a reward, that is pretty damn funny and original, at least to my knowledge.

How about "Class Struggle" pretty terrible boat name.

DILLIGAF is pretty common radio slang in the military, not original, good name along the lines of "Box of Grid Squares" , "Chem-Light Battery", "Soup Sandwich", "Victor 1 Romeo 91 November Papa Uniform 55 Yankee" ect.

A First-38 (I will leave her current name unspoken) I was sailing on was almost named MILF - the owner and his son thought it would be funny for the hot mom to call for check-in to the race or asking for a slip in the marina. SHE didn't quite find the humor in it. But she WAS a MILF!

A long time ago the Hooper brothers were refused registration for their new FireBall; they wanted to call it "Seducer", but the powers that be decided that was far too racy. Ended up calling it "Sir Juicer"...muuuuch better!

Then there was the Farr 37 jointly owned by a visually impaired [blind] sailor and a psychiatrist. Naturally it was called "Out Of Sight Out of Mind".

Finally the Aus Laser Class had to clamp down on excessively long names when some genius called one " A Pizza Without Cheese Is Like A Woman Without Knees". Buggered if I know how they got that on the transom. tongue.gif

OK I am new here and was searcing for references to blind or visually impaired sailing when I found this thread. We are practicing for the Blind Sailing Worlds which will be on J-24's. We have a boat on loan to our team that we use to practice and race in local regattas and we named it "Blind Ambition".

when we first got the m24, we wanted to name it Donkey Punch...it was fine until one of the fleet member's wives got curious as to what it meant...she wiki'ed it and got this animated GIF of the term for what a Donkey Punch really was.

AnimatedDonkeyPunch.gif

Of coarse I tried to deny the whole definition by sating the only thing I knew that was called Donkey Punch was a British movie with hot chicks on a yacht...

Can not tell you how many "Conversations" I had to have with countless wives and members about how inappropriate the name was...we settled on something more tame...but the boat still has Donkey in the name, and new decal for the stern is on it's way..."Got Punch?"

I went to see a boat that was up for sale once... I did not know the name until I got to the boat...

The name on the transom (in smallish letters) was "penus" I do not know what that meant, but it certainly spoke about the owner...

I passed on that basis...

A guy with a Santana 20 at the local club named his boat Cocaine and Hookers. When his mother in law asked him what he spent all his money on he always answered with that. He put the name on both sides in letters so enormous they stretched the full length of the boat. Several club members weren't amused, so he had to take them off.
