      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

      Moderation Team Change   06/16/2017

      After fifteen years of volunteer moderation at SA, I will no longer be part of the moderation team. The decision to step aside is mine, and has been some time in the works but we did not wish to announce it in advance for a number of reasons. It's been fun, but I need my time back for other purposes now. The Underdawg admin account will not be monitored until further notice, as I will be relinquishing control of it along with my administrative privileges. Zapata will continue on as a moderator, and any concerns or issues can be directed to that account or to the Editor until further notice. Anyone interested in helping moderate the forums should reach out to Scot by sending a PM to the Editor account. Please note that I am not leaving the community, I am merely stepping aside from Admin responsibilities and privileges on the site.

Multihulls in StFYC Rolex Big Boat Series

After a few years of subcritical mass, multihulls are in the BBS! Thanks Peter and StFYC

"In addition to the new HPR class, Rolex Big Boat Series organizers will also be inviting high performance catamarans to compete in 2012. “With the excitement being generated by the 34thAmericas Cup and the Americas Cup World Series currently underway, we thought this would also be the perfect opportunity to invite a serious high performance catamaran class for the Rolex Big Boat Series.” says Peter Stoneberg, Commodore of St. Francis Yacht Club. “There are currently several Prosail 40 catamarans as well as an SL-33 and an Extreme 40 sailing on San Francisco Bay, and we hope to attract all of these boats as well as more boats from outside of the Bay Area,” Stoneberg continued."

My previous comment had nothing whatsoever to do with the announcement of the addition of a High Performance Catamaran class at the 2013 Rolex Big Boat series.

We've tried to get the tri's to rally to get a fleet for RBBS the last couple of years- no luck. The uber beach cat fleet OTH has grown and rallied and is interested. If a tri had similar speed and was sufficiently big (35 ft or so), perhaps an invite could be suggested. I know big was part of the requirement but so is evenly matched speed and seaworthiness so the fleet doesn't get so spread out for race logistics reasons.

I have a 34'x26' 1600# carbon mast trimaran with similar speed, I have asked to enter but they only want to race the kind of boats that lost the AC challenge. So the invite is for catamarans not multihulls. One step forward, two steps back.

Take the chip off your shoulder..might be more invite-able- besides its not your typical positive- can do attitude.cool.gif It is by invitation (and its not my or BAMA's invitation). And the good news is that we finally had a big enough, similar enough fleet that was interested in being invited- and they were. Cakewalk was simply not considered in any of the "what if" discussions being new and unknown. Sorry about that- it was an innocent oversight many mos. ago.

 

So part of the race management logistics challenge is the fleet/division has similar enough speed and reliability/durability.

Shadow yes

 

Met with Michael T today

He reports verbal yes on Rocket (and probably not on beowolf) and he's optimistic on Adrenalin (doing Jazz cup the week before).

 

So thats a verbal yes/likely on 6 boats!!

 

TUKI and Sig 45 would be extra- any inputs?? and then we can consider special boats

 

Entries need to be paid up by end of Aug- need BAMA rating

 

Start thinking about courses- they'll take input

LunaRosa and ETNZ have SL-33 (not in town- I checked)

 

what about the other teams? Ben Aisle? Korea? China? Energy? Artemis? Ortusa

I believe that Ben "Ainslie" had been training in a Finn.....in London.;)

BAR is not competing in the 2013 LV/AC, so I doubt there is a training boat in place.

AR has been using the ORMA 60 Tri to test their wing.

OR has a second pair modified AC-45s.

Energy Team and China not competing for the 2013 LV/AC, so likely no trainers.

Not sure about TK.

 

 

I would suggest contacting the Extreme 40 series folks and see if they are interested in sending a couple of boats over (....for charter? :blink: ).

I believe the boats are owned by the Series, and leased to the teams.

I sailed Vamonosi yesterday. First off the SIG45 is a fabulous boat. Secondly there is guarded interest in the BBS. I will be chatting with them in an hour or so and can find out more. The discussion was (and someone from another entered cat was there) how the course layout will work for the BBS? Will there be a separate course (which means more volunteers, boats etc) or will they have a different course in the same starting area? Any knowledge on this would be most helpful.

The answer is that we have a lot of latitude in defining longer courses and of our choosing within the (the relatively vast) capabilities of the RBBS RC. Its up to the fleet. Everyone's preference is to emulate RBBS fleets which alternate daily from a city front to Berkeley circle venue. Specific courses are up to the MH fleet.

 

and they need to get a BAMA rating..

He hit 34kts he reported...we hit 25 (my PR) and we sailed at a sustained 20-23. Absolutely fantastic. I hope they do make the BBS!

I bet if you are willing to sail Afterburner from ventura to san francisco on a firm schedule (not worried about sailing into 30 knots and 8 foot chop on the nose for 300 + miles) he would be happy to participate...

GPS Tracks

I know its late idea, but its possible. I'd like to suggest you log your tracks and send to BAMA

 

BAMA has pioneered GPS tracks for entertainment and education value to improve club racing since 2008.

http://www.sfbama.org/racing/replay/BAMA%20Race%20Replay.html . This page also shows how to download and where to send.

 

Its important to set your sampling rate fast enough for useful resolution and small enough for your GPS memory capacity. You also need a GPS that can download your track. We have been able to retrieve tracks from handheld units after the fact. Ask for assistance if you need it

Day 1

 

BR had some jib sheet block failure that made for challenging boat handling in the 2nd race where it blew in the teens and was verging on over powered.

 

Shadow came alive in the 2nd race as did Vamonos in those conditions- got to love a 45 cruising cat flying a hull driven by the owner

 

Lightspeed gives pretty good chase

 

Rocket 88 had hull failure and didn't finish the 1st race and sadly may not recover. The 2nd D-class incident in a week with Adrenalin out with aft beam problems

 

Cakewalk had some sail handling challenges when they discovered a screecher in the water is not fast. Some herculean crew effort paid a price though...

I find it interesting watching the tracker, big difference in the SIG's performance compared to the others, somewhat surpised there is that much difference given the hype of the SIG's performance from Le Breton. And before I get trashed, I do realize I'm not comparing apples to apples, still like the SIG though.

I'm surprised too. I never would have guessed that she'd be so fast. It's incredible that a luxury cat can rate a -45 PHRF and hang with stripped out race boats.

Also the crew was TomCat crew plus Gino. Owner was a hobie/nacra owner. Very nice guy and drove the boat- its pretty special watching a cruiser fly a hull

Speed difference was mostly in light air. When it blows that SIG45 flies (very comfortably...)! A super cool boat indeed.

It also did very well in the 'Bay Tour' where there is more reaching and not pure windward/leeward.

Great to have them out there!

We have different day-jobs.

 

 

Well, that and short tacking the City Front in a flood tide wouldn't be a lot of fun...That would be a hairball event for the burner though on the city tour in 35 knots and an ebb tide...Send video if you ever decide to do it!
